For the fifth consecutive fall season, NC State women's soccer (8-8-2) has earned an at large bid into the NCAA Tournament, as it will travel to South Florida (12-3-3) for the NCAA First Round.

This will be the first-ever meeting between the two teams, as they will square off on Sunday, November 14 at 1 p.m. at Corbett Field in Tampa, Fla.

This year's resume was highlighted by a No. 38 RPI and the second toughest schedule in the nation. NC State faced nine teams in the top 40 of the RPI, and earned wins over No. 4 Duke and No. 3 North Carolina, as well as a draw at No. 9 Georgetown.

NC State started its season with a 4-2-2 ledger in nonconference play, and then after standing at 0-4-0 in ACC play with multiple last-minute losses, the Pack managed to win four of its last six matches to close out its regular season with a .500 record.

After losing the most influential class in program history in 2019 and then enduring adversity through the 2020-21 season due to the COVID pandemic, the Pack brought in 15 freshmen for the fall and its starting lineup consisted of nine underclassmen.

Overall, the program is 14-13-6 all-time in the NCAA Tournament and has moved forward out of the first round 12 times. Since 2016, it has reached the Sweet Sixteen three times (2016, '18, '19), and made a NCAA Second Round appearance in 2017.

The NCAA Second and Third Rounds will be held Nov. 19-21, while NCAA Elite Eight will run Nov. 26-28 at various campus sites. The NCAA College Cup will be hosted at PayPal Park in San Jose, Calif., Dec. 3-5

NC State women's soccer's (8-8-2) journey in the 2021 NCAA Tournament begins Sunday when it travels to Tampa, Fla., to face 22nd-ranked South Florida (12-3-3) for the NCAA First Round. Kickoff is set for 1 p.m. at Corbett Stadium, and the match will be broadcast on ESPN+.

THE MATCHUP
This will be the first-ever meeting between NC State and USF, as the Wolfpack's matchup with the Bulls will be the 11th team on its 2021 schedule that is ranked or receiving votes for the national polls.

USF fell to Memphis in penalty kicks after a 0-0 draw in this year's American Athletic Conference Championship final after winning the regular season title. Its RPI heading into the postseason is 22, as two of its three losses on the year were to top 25 RPI opponents.

NC State, who enters the tournament with an RPI of 38, played the second toughest regular season schedule in the nation and won four of its last six conference matches to reach a .500 record. It faced nine teams in the top 40 of the RPI with a starting lineup consisting of nine underclassmen and earned wins over No. 4 Duke and No. 3 North Carolina, as well as a draw at No. 9 Georgetown.

NC State women's soccer (9-8-2) is moving on in the NCAA Tournament as it shut out No. 22 South Florida (12-4-3), 2-0, in the first round on Sunday at Corbett Stadium.

Goals by team scoring leaders Annika Wohner and Jameese Joseph in the 24th and 51st minutes, respectively, propelled the Wolfpack to its fifth shutout victory of the year.

This is the fifth consecutive fall season that the Wolfpack has advanced out of the first round, and the 13th time in program history it has accomplished the feat.

Sunday's matchup with the Bulls was the Pack's 11th contest this season against a team that is ranked or receiving votes in the national polls, and it is its third victory this fall over a top 25 opponent.

The Pack put together a dominant first half with 61 percent possession over the Bulls and held a 5-2 shot advantage with five corners. Thanks to Annika Wohner's first career postseason goal and sixth of the season in the 24th minute, NC State managed to take a 1-0 lead going into the locker room at halftime.

Fernanda Soto played a beautiful through ball from the midfield to Leyah Hall-Robinson at the top of the box. Hall-Robinson then played the short pass to Wohner and her shot slid into the bottom right part of the net.

It was Soto's third assist of the year, leading all freshmen in the category, while for Hall-Robinson it was her first point of the season.

Jameese Joseph doubled the team's lead in the 51st minute with an unassisted goal. It was her team-leading ninth score of the year and she now has 20 points. Jaiden Thomas's pass got past a USF defender and found the feet of Joseph, who made a great run and her strike from the top of the box found the bottom left corner of the net.

In total, the Pack outshot USF, 11-8, and put five of its shots on goal while limiting the Bulls to just two on frame. Additionally, it won seven corners in the contest.

NC State will next face Pepperdine in the NCAA Second Round Friday, November 19 at 2 p.m.. The second and third rounds will be hosted by ACC foe and top-seeded Florida State at the Seminole Soccer Complex in Tallahassee, Fla.

A @Maria19cheza appreciation post

In her first fall season, Cheza currently ranks top five among the ACC in saves (68), save percentage (.782) and GAA (.97). Her saves, GAA and shutouts (5.5) rank top three among all freshmen in NC State program history.

.@PackWSoccer conceded early and was unable to mount a comeback against Pepperdine.

The loss marks just the second time the Pack has failed to make the Sweet 16 in its five tournament appearances under Santoro.

So whats the post mortem on the season for this program? Is the trend line up or down? Yow hired Santoro with no head coaching experience from Wake Forest, because he was supposed to be one of the best recruiters in the country. It does not seem like he has gotten that Elite level of talent here that he landed as an assistant at wake.

Jenna Butler and Jameese Joseph of the NC State women's soccer team garnered all-region honors from United Soccer Coaches this week. Joseph was named to the Atlantic All-Region First Team while Butler was tabbed Atlantic All-Region Third Team.

For Joseph, this is the second regional honor in her career from the organization, as she was named to the third team in 2019, while for Butler this is the first postseason award in her career.

This is the fifth consecutive fall season that NC State has had at least one player named to an all-region team.

The pair played a key part in the team's 9-9-2 and record No. 38 RPI that was highlighted by three top 25 wins, including two top five victories, and its fifth consecutive fall season reaching at least the NCAA Second Round.

Butler started all 20 matches at center back and tallied four goals on the season, all header goals off set pieces, as well as a pair of assists. She additionally played a significant role in the team's six shutout wins on the season.

Joseph, who recently garnered Second Team All-ACC honors, led the team with nine goals and 20 points, as she too started all 20 matches as an attacker in the 2021 fall season. She was responsible for the game-winning goals over No. 4 Duke and No. 3 North Carolina to help the team defeat both teams in the same season for the first time in program history.

NC State women's soccer's Jenna Butler and Lulu Guttenberger will use their extra year of eligibility, granted by the NCAA due to the COVID-19 pandemic, and return for the 2022 campaign.

Butler, a 2021 United Soccer Coaches Third Team All-Atlantic Region selection, has started all 66 games in her career as a central defender and owns five goals and six assists. Guttenberger, a three-time All-ACC selection and team captain, has started all 75 games she's played in her career and has seven goals and 12 assists from her central defender position.

The duo has played a vital role in the Wolfpack's success in recent years, as the program has made a pair of Sweet Sixteen appearances (2018, '19) and has advanced to the NCAA Second Round twice (2017, '21). Additionally, NC State has reached the ACC Tournament semifinals twice (2017, '19), finished nationally ranked from 2017-19 and compiled three 10+ win seasons.

"Obviously, we're thrilled to have Lulu and Jenna back for their final season," said head coach Tim Santoro. "They're two of our best players and, to me, they're as good as any defensive tandem in the ACC and the country."

NC State women's soccer head coach Tim Santoro has added Alexis Strickland to his program. A transfer from Oklahoma, she will join the Wolfpack in the 2022 spring semester and have two years left of eligibility.

Strickland is a native of Raleigh, N.C., and played for NC Courage before heading to the University of North Carolina out of high school. While with the Tar Heels in 2019, she played in 27 matches and totaled 824 minutes while registering four goals and three assists for 11 points. Her first college goal came versus Duke when she notched the game winner 13 seconds before the half.

In 2020, she was a medical redshirt at UNC before going to Oklahoma for the 2021 fall season. The forward tallied a goal and two assists while logging 897 minutes in 17 contests with the Sooners.
