Bad take by me. Apologies.

In retrospect I'd put Kev in the discussion with some of the great X's and O's guys of the modern era.

Cool retort, bro.

Care to offer up any examples of bad coaching?
Unfortunately it's pretty easy to offer up examples of bad coaching during the keatts era. We don't run an offense, our press is a joke, and we don't play defense. Put me in the boat of people who thinks keatts needs elite recruits in order to overcome his coaching flaws. I wish we'd hire new assistants

He had so much elite talent at UNCW to help him overcome his lack of coaching acumen. Glad people say that it's easy to give examples yet can't give them.

Is watching this team not enough?

We have no offensive philosophy.

Our defense is atrocious. It's been bad every year under keatts. We "press" but it's awful and ends up leading to more open dunks than turnovers against good teams.

We never rebound. We miss FT's. We haven't fixed ANY of these issues in 5 years.

His scheme is pretty gimmicky imo and worked well at lower levels. It doesn't work in the ACC.

Do you guys have any examples to actually support your view of him being a good coach? Anything?

We have an offensive philosophy. It works a lot better with a facilitating point guard like Markell and I'm sure Keatts would like to get Hayes there.

The defense is built on the concept of 3 is better than 2 and trying to increase opportunity. Run teams off of the 3 point line and speed up the game with full court defense and deflections.

I do wish we were better at rebounding.

His scheme isn't gimmicky. A lot of teams play a pnr style. Need shooters and facilitators.

He's done a great job with player development (Hellems, Manny, Seabron, Daniels to name a few). His guys don't quit. He got that first team to the tourney, his second team should have and his third team was projected as a tourney team. People's thought are probably different if he had 3 ncaa tourneys in 4 seasons. Also, his offense looked pretty good when we had Markell facilitating to shooters and yurt as a pick and pop guy. He also outcoaches what many believe is the second best coach in the acc every year in Tony Bennett but that's just some extra credit. This year hasn't been great but they've been close in the games they've lost despite not having Bates, Gant or a healthy Morsell lately.

I don't hate Keatts. I couldn't find a single example of bad coaching tonight in our double digit loss to 3-7 Wright State.

So back to recruiting. We really need a man sized pf in addition to Phillips to help with rebounding. Via transfer , juco, or wherever.

Excellent response. Thank you for the civil reply. You bring up a ton of good points, however, I will just say that Keatts offense looks atrocious this season because Hayes is not a true PG like you say. However, its the coaches job to have the kids he needs in position to win games. My biggest gripe with keatts has been how poor his roster construction has been the last few years.

No PG who can facilitate? Your job to recruit one.
No serviceable backup to bates? Your job to recruit one.

And yes, things would be different if keatts had 3 NCAA tourney appearances, but he doesn't. He's going to end up with 1 in 5 years. That's firable.

Unfortunately keatts best years were with gottfried's players. He can't seem to get his own guys.

Good comments from both sides.
Criticism…KK has loaded his roster with guards (and wings) and not one is a capable point guard. Seaborne is the best option right now. That's a coaching decision.
Our only beefy forward, Hellen's, is graduating, and we have no back on the roster. How is this possible? So we either bring in a freshman, which is another year of youth, or we get even smaller. If portal is an option, why did he not use it for that spot earlier?
KK's complete mismanagement of the roster is catching up with him this year. He knew he was losing DJ, and decided that Ross was an adequate replacement? Really?
He knew he was losing the little bearded guy, saw Cam everyday in practice for a year, but decided he could play point at an ACC level? Really? He's a decent wing with a bad handle.
Plus, KK's approach to roster management fosters player transfers. Let's say Dillingham does show up; why would Cam stay as an upper class man to be stuck behind Dill and Smith?
KK needs help, but he's hired friends from the high school ranks instead.
turbosyco

Dill isnt coming for 2 years *** does that have to do with Cam? Bad handles isnt cam's problem he has .9 turnovers on the year. The problem is he's not a pg and it doesnt help he's not healthy.
Westwolf
How long do you want to ignore this user?
Lol… so Cam transferring as a senior is better?
turbosyco
How long do you want to ignore this user?
why would he transfer because of dillingham? Whats keatts supposed to do, not recruit top ten kids because cam may or may not be here in 2 years?
Westwolf
How long do you want to ignore this user?
KK should try not recruiting a roster too overloaded with players with similar skill sets for similar positions.
It's not rocket science.
Have a couple of big men, a couple of power forwards, a few wings and at least two point guards. All of these spread out by grade level. It's been used for a million years.
turbosyco
How long do you want to ignore this user?
well cam and dillingham are a bad example of that and lack of transfers is one of the few good things keatts has going for him.

We have to absolutely ace the transfer portal this spring. The roster in its current form is not built for success next year. We'll still be very young. This year is trending towards disaster (you never know though with the ACC being so so bad ) so Keatts has to personally feel some heat and go all in on bringing a game changer into the mix. If 2022 goes well and is followed up with Dilly coming in , the tide can change for his tenure.

Now this I agree with! Unless multiple guys decide to transfer out, we really won't have many roster spots available. Keatts has to go hard after a game changer. No more depth pieces next year…bring in a starter!

I think we'll have at least two roster spots available for the transfer portal. Losing Hellems, Bates and Allen. Adding Phillips and LJ. Inevitably will lose another player at least. Won't speculate on who though.

Seabron keeps it up and he may be able to hit the draft too.

Agreed, and I'm hoping we get 1 more year out of Seabron! Add in a couple of difference makers from the portal and we may be looking at Keatts much differently after next year. The question for me becomes: will he actually go out and land a big-time player out of the portal? I guess we'll see

Seabron is getting rated as a late first rounds pick in a few mocks I've seen. That being said, can't really see him lasting long in the league with his abysmal shooting. Would love to see him really focusing on his jump shot for a year and then making the jump. However, he is already 21 so already behind the 8-ball from an NBA draft perspective.
OldTuffy

And with his family situation he's probably ready to leave whenever he can and get some kind of money playing somewhere. Not sure we can get him a decent enough NIL deal.
Westwolf

So, if Seabron leaves, are we officially WTNNY?

Well if he went to the nba, he could practice his jump shot every day while having lots of $ in his bank account

I'm also not seeing Seabron on any first round mock drafts. Could you link them?

He hasn't proven he can do that, so i'll say no.

nbadraft.net is a garbage draft source; Seabron's name is being thrown around in draft circles, but not as a first-rounder right now given the shot. The main reason I could see him leaving is because he'll be 22 by this year's draft, and he'd be 23 next year, which is pretty ancient when it comes to the draft

The portal as it exists hasn't really been around long enough to take an accurate sample to judge KK, IMO. He has gotten impact transfers (Freeman/Dabiels/Brice) so I'll trust KK in the portal with no NCAA cloud. I'm sure I'm in the minority though, by the looks of it.

I don't think you are in the minority. I'm with you..I don't think its fair to judge KK thus far. NCAA cloud, Covid in the setting of already being behind the 8ball being in the same recruiting area of Duke/UNC. We already know hes got an eye for talent- Patrick Williams, Siddiq Bey, Josh Hall, Anfernee Simon, Jalen Lecque, Wendell Moore. All impact players that never made it to campus.

Don't forget that we were all over Cam Thomas way before he blew up, and offered T Smith before anyone else knew who he was. And started recruiting Brandon White when he was nowhere near the top-100.
