^ I can see a lot of people falling for fake SSA emails and phishing attempts. I'm suspicious when it comes to emails. When I received the email that appeared to be from the SSA, I went to the website to confirm.

I did the same thing.

I've not yet set up my account even though I'm eligible to file for benefits. Tried to years ago and couldn't because my credit files were frozen. Have been too lazy, I guess, to unfreeze my credit with all three bureaus so I just haven't gotten around to it. The past two years I've been getting paper statements in the mail, which doesn't exactly motivate me to set up an account.

Hmmm. We have our credit frozen but it didn't cause an issue for me. My husband already had a login.gov so he just has to connect it to his SS, I guess. I also get paper statements.

Today I learned there's a restaurant that cooks burgers in 100 year old grease.

Dyer's Burgers And Their Century-Old Grease Are A Thing Of Memphis Legend

https://www.southernliving.com/travel/tennessee/dyers-burgers-memphis-history

...if the idea of eating century-old grease doesn't sit well with you, Robertson assured us that it's perfectly safe. "We strain it through to get any particles out of it and then we season it," he explained. "It's the same molecules from 1912, it's never been changed."

I make sourdough bread with starter I've had since 1982. This apparently does not creep out my family.

When I was a kid, my mom kept a can of used grease near the stove. She used to cook with it, and it was the best tasting food.

Today I learned that cryptocurrency is rapidly climbing the list of hot issues going into election 2024. I confess I didn't see that coming, probably because I'm a bit of a crypto-skeptic though I'm trying to keep an open mind on the subject. But Trump and RFK Jr. have opened up on this issue with both barrels such that even Dem policymakers are beginning to sweat that their anti-crypto stance may be driving younger voters away.

Today I learned how Olympic gymnasts avoid wedgies

https://www.yahoo.com/sports/former-olympic-gymnast-nastia-liukin-170125107.html

Ahead of the 2016 Rio de Janeiro Olympics, former gymnast and gold medalist Nastia Liukin spoke to People about the sport's trademark uniform.

Liukin, 34, told the outlet that competitors would lose points if they're caught picking their wedgie. "You're not allowed to [pick a wedgie] or else you get deducted," she confessed. The solution in some instances? An adhesive spray.

"So a lot of people use like sticky spray [called TuffSkin] for your butt so your leotard doesn't move," Liukin continued. "I've never used it and I know most of the girls don't really use it, though we use it for our wrists before we put tape on underneath our grips because we're sweaty and it's a little extra stick."

Today I learned about Teflon Flu.

What Is Teflon Flu
https://www.yahoo.com/lifestyle/teflon-flu-why-illness-caused-181000841.html

Teflon flu, also known as Polymer fume fever, is an illness that occurs as the result of inhaling fumes from an overheated Teflon or nonstick pan. This type of cookware is made from polytetrafluoroethylene a.k.a. PTFE or "forever chemicals", which can take decades or hundreds of years to break down.

While the symptoms are temporary and typically occur within 12 to 24 hours of exposure, you might experience fever, chills, muscle tension, and headache.

Today I learned about the paper cut "sweet spot".

Paper cut physics pinpoints the most hazardous types of paper

https://www.sciencenews.org/article/paper-cut-physics

Scientists have now explained the physics behind why some paper is more prone to shred fingers.

In experiments with a gelatin replica of human tissue, researchers found that a thin sheet of paper tended to buckle before it could cut. Thick paper typically indented the material but didn't pierce it: Like a dull knife blade, it didn't concentrate force into a small enough area. A thickness of around 65 micrometers was a paper cut sweet spot or sore spot physicist Kaare Jensen and colleagues report in a paper to appear in Physical Review E.

Their burgers suck. Turns out boiling a burger in 100 year old oil makes a great story but not a good burger.

wolfbreath, I appreciate you bringing these here now that the BY is limited. From what they're doing with other sites, I wonder if it will be gone completely before long.

Not having been on the main campus in sixteen years, and when I did, I stayed on the north side, I've never seen the Talley Student Union before….amazing place. Not sure what got into my spouse this morning, but she dragged me down to the Red & White store, bought a bunch of merch, then over to main campus and TSU to buy more.

Today I learned what Hellmann's mayonnaise cologne (aka Will Levis No. 8) smells like.

https://www.thetakeout.com/1641265/hellmanns-will-levis-mayonnaise-cologne-review/

As a man who squeezed a dollop of mayonnaise into his coffee, it should come as no surprise that the professional football player wouldn't mind carrying the scent of mayo with him throughout the day.

After letting a few spritzes of the cologne sit and soak into a piece of paper, the lingering smell is closer to lemon and vanilla than it is to Hellmann's. The faintest hint of mayonnaise is barely detectable, but whether or not that's a positive is up for debate.

Kamikaze termites blow themselves up with 'explosive' backpacks

https://www.livescience.com/animals/insects/kamikaze-termites-blow-themselves-up-with-explosive-rucksacks-and-scientists-just-figured-out-how

Kamikaze termites in French Guiana have evolved a unique defense mechanism carrying "rucksacks" filled with a toxic liquid that they can trigger to explode, poisoning their enemies in the process. Now, scientists have solved the mystery of how these deadly backpacks can be safely carried around then detonated on demand.

Today I learned Researchers used common food dye to turn live mice transparent

https://newatlas.com/biology/dye-mice-transparent/

In an effort to enhance the research abilities of biologists, Stanford University researchers have discovered that applying a popular food coloring to the skin of mice allowed them to see through to the rodents' internal organs and other structures.

The dye that gives foods, drugs, and cosmetics a lemon yellow color can also make mice transparent, as illustrated in this generative image.

Today I learned M&M's has a new flavor. Peanut Butter & Jelly.

https://www.yahoo.com/lifestyle/m-m-just-introduced-first-131500757.html

The brand's first new flavor innovation since 2022 is here: Peanut Butter & Jelly M&M's. The new bite-sized candies feature a berry-flavored chocolate treat with a smooth peanut butter center. Because the only flavor pairing more classic than chocolate and peanut butter is PB & Jso combining all three can only mean delicious things.

Today I learned...We now know who was cannibalised on the doomed Franklin expedition

https://www.newscientist.com/article/2449578-we-now-know-who-was-cannibalised-on-the-doomed-franklin-expedition/

Human remains recovered from the British Royal Navy's doomed Franklin expedition have been identified as Captain James Fitzjames using DNA and genealogical evidence. The unfortunate officer has also been confirmed as the first known victim of cannibalism among the expedition members.

The discovery also makes Fitzjames the first identified victim of cannibalism among the Franklin expedition's members. Earlier analysis by the late bioarchaeologist Anne Keenleyside had revealed cut marks on many of the recovered remains, with one lower jawbone now identified as belonging to Fitzjames having multiple cut marks.

This indicates some of the last survivors who were trekking overland resorted to eating parts of Fitzjames's body and those of several other sailors. The finding "reveals the desperation of the Franklin sailors", says Swanston.
