Another above-average hurricane season is in the forecast for 2022. A prediction issued Thursday by scientists at Colorado State University says there will be at least 19 named storms and nine hurricanes four of which will be Category 3 or higher.

An average season normally has 14 named storms, around seven hurricanes and three major hurricanes.

The busier-than-average predicted season continues a trend that researchers have seen for some time. Last season, CSU scientists predicted 17 named storms and four major hurricanes.

It ended up being the third most active season on record, with 21 named storms. There were seven hurricanes last season four of which were considered major.

It only takes one storm to change your life and community. If you live in an area prone to tropical cyclones, you need to be prepared. Learn how during National & NC Hurricane Preparedness Week (May 1-7, 2022).

Hurricanes are getting bigger and stronger every year it seems. Scary times with climate change.

Do you have supporting data for the assertion that hurricanes are getting bigger and stronger?

We know the frequency of hurricanes isn't showing an increase as shown in this report.

Hurricane Agatha Makes Landfall

Hurricane Agatha made landfall just west of Puerto Angel, Mexico on Monday afternoon as a category 2 hurricane.

The NHC officially upgraded it to Hurricane Agatha on Sunday morning, making it the first of the Eastern Pacific Hurricane Season.

Tropical Storm Colin has formed along the SC coast this morning. Colin will have no impact today on the wrn Carolinas/NE GA, but moisture and instability unrelated to Colin will yield thunderstorms in our area - with locally heavy rain and gusty winds possible.

LOL. The "Tropical Storm" that wasn't...

I live directly in it's path from yesterday, we had some regular rain yesterday morning... and then as soon as they slapped the designation on it - basically nothing. Kept waiting to see some wind... but that never came either.

They seem to be getting increasingly "loose" with these definitions over the past few years.

I was watching the radar and the wind on my apps all yesterday and never saw anything organized enough to be a tropical storm. We've had thunder storms worse than that this year.

Many of our viewers/followers don't know how long it takes tropical systems to cross the Atlantic. Here's an idea of timing based on past tracks from 1886-2020. IF this system developed & IF it reached the U.S. (far from guarantees), it would take 10-12 days to do so #scwx #ncwx

Tropical Storm Fiona developed overnight and is forecast to continue a westward motion over the next few days, nearing Puerto Rico this weekend. Fiona is then expected to turn northwestward by early next week. Obtain regular weather forecast updates from official sources.

Hopefully it stays off-shore. We don't have the best track record with storms starting with F that hit in September.

I know that the cone doesn't extend far enough out yet, but those first two moves to the north suggest another "hard turn". Hopefully that is what it will be.

Yeah, I saw the spaghetti models on Spectrum this morning, and although the majority of them show it staying out to sea, there were quite a few that show it potentially making landfall on the continental US... right now, you still have to assume this one could go anywhere...

So far, all I've been paying attention to is potential direction... haven't heard a lot about strength predictions as of yet, but maybe someone here has been paying better attention.
