Someone suggested this thread be started somewhere else. Figured it would be good to have a central thread just so people can reminisce on some "good 'ol days" if you will. I didn't have quite the social scene some of y'all had but I did have one year of having a fraternity house on Maiden Lane. It is a shame that the new kids starting school will never even get to experience anything like that.

What do y'all have to share?

EV, The Alley, The Well, PBs, The Point, Rum Runners, The Oxford, The Big Easy, McDaid's and of course fraternity parties were the top social scenes from 2011-2015.

TJ Warren stopped by our biggest fraternity party of the year with Freeman and Dez Lee the day after he declared for the NBA so I like to claim that we threw his draft party haha

Camping out for tickets. Brent Road party. Getting drunk with Kenny Inge and Damon Thorton. Penny beer night. Archie Miller being an *******. Frat court keggers. I did a lot of drinking. Lucky I made it out alive honestly.

McDaids was such a good time for that very brief period it was open.

Also Big Easy was my go to spot downtown for most of college. I wonder if it's still pretty popular amongst students now? Fayetteville St in general seems to be less popular

Man. When I was in school downtown wasn't a destination at all. The only thing I remember being down there was Cafe Luna.

I graduated in 2017. There was basically only one bar on Hillsborough by the end of my time and that was East Village. And even that is gone now, pretty much zero college bars now near campus. It's sad for sure

I haven't been back in quite a while. That's crazy though. So there were more bars on H Street in the 90's? Crazy.

Yup, managed to never get arrested. Got a drinking ticket, which I believe 25 years later is still on my record, but never got the cuffs, despite being with folks that did more than once. Way too much drunk driving and drunk riding, something I'm very ashamed of thinking about now because of the danger to others.

Love going to big easy. Fayetteville is still pretty popular with big easy, anchor and a few others. It did take a hit with cap city and Coglins closing

I don't remember all of the bars but Hillsboro St bar crawl in the 90s did it's duty.

Edit to add… convenience stores counted too.

Was it Paul Cousins that handled alcohol incidents in the dorms back in the day? For some reason that name is rattling around in my brain.

Just him in the bathroom at the big bad wolf saying something about a female that was across the line. From what I heard from others, it wasn't out of character for him at the time. I'm sure we've all said or done things when we were young that we regretted, so on a public forum, I'll leave it at that

The Cantina, Mitches, East Village, Pantana Bobs, The Brewery, Five-O. Man, I have so many stories about my drunken times frequenting those establishments. I have actually body surfed down Mitches Tavern stairs one night on a dare. Oh, to be young. I forgot the name of the bar that used to be the ice cream place(Swensons?) on Dan Allan and Hillsborough in the early 90's.

Forgot about the Five-0! And Have A-Nice Day Cafe (although that wasn't on H St).

Always loved these threads on PP brickyard.

When I was at State (2009-2012), Hillsborough was down to The Alley, EV, Mitch's, The Keg, and PB's. Outside of going to PB's on a week night, no one really went to them except for the Hillsborough Hikes.

We went downtown a lot. Downtown Sports Bar on Glenwood until it hit the fan. Then the shift to Fayetteville Street for Big easy, architect and Isaac Hunters (which became cap city I think).

We went to Rum Runners every Wednesday for 1.50 well drinks. Place was slammed every week.

And the Goat on western on Sunday's for dollar mystery beers. Always a fight, usually involved State football players.

During the final semester of my senior year, on Tuesdays/Thursdays, I had a class from something like 9:30 to 11... and then one from around 2 to 3:30.

So after the morning class me and a couple of others would head over to Mitchs, eat lunch and have a couple of pitchers of beer, and then make our way back to the "courtyard of the Carolinas" (I"m pretty sure it was called). In April/May when the weather was perfect, we'd spread out under the shade of one of those big ol' oaks and nap until around 1:45, then go to the afternoon class.
Pretty much every Tuesday and Thursday.

Barry's, Barry's II, Crazy Zach's, The Keg, Edwards Grocery, Cameron Village Subway/Underground, Central Campus Craze, West Campus/East Campus Jam, Zoo Days

Most happened on campus when you could drink beer on campus. 18 was the legal limit for beer
I asked a ref if he could give me a technical foul for thinking bad things about him. He said, of course not. I said, well, I think you stink. And he gave me a technical. You can't trust em.

Man, there was always a bunch of "leg" at Barry's (probably Barry's II at the time)...

And you nailed it Glass... I was old enough to stay ahead of the two incremental age increases as well... first went up to 19 (1984?)... and then to 21 (1986). I had just graduated on the six year plan (yeah, we got away with anything and everything back then) when it went up to 21... that was the insane night on Franklin Street in Chapel Hill (I think every college in the state went over there that night)...

The timing of the Mitch's conversation is ironic, this article was just posted by the N&O on the 1st: https://www.newsobserver.com/living/food-drink/article258758478.html?fbclid=IwAR23qUCXyTT1qxp8m8I3KhxFpJ0xVxy68zMp9heCpG7Int90hs2jh0YZxuo.

Apparently it is going to reopen soon under new ownership (the people who own Mojoe's so they're still locals and are going to keep the previous owner involved) and according to a buddy of mine who has a relative involved with the re-opening, they're also going to intermittently open up the place below it, previously known as College Grill, that hasn't been open for roughly 50 years and has been used as storage for Mitch's.

Hillsboro St the night we beat FSU in 98 (I think) was one of the most fun nights of my life. The entire street was filled for hours with euphoria and debauchery.

The Wolves Den
The PR
The Scene (a go-go bar, in the triangle of Hillsborough & Clark)
and my favorite: The Jolly Knave (was one of the first there on the day it opened).

I also remember quite a few lunches at Sadlacks. My wife when we were dating used to go to Two Guys also. I think they had spaghetti and meat sauce for around $4 or the Wolfpack special for $5. The family that owned that place was really nice from what I remember.

Before Barry's, It was The Gateway Restaurant. I seem to remember it was open 24 hrs, but it definitely was busy after "Last Call" at the Wolves Den (a few doors down) and the PR. And the Knave.

LOL. I can remember being in Two Guys as a freshman, and my friend wrote a check for something like $2.85 to cover his lunch and tip... that dude wrote a check for everything!

Damon and i were boys there for a bit…two of my favorite Damon stories…he showed up at my room in UT with CeCe a few hours after CeCe had dropped thirty some in the dean dome and beat them single handedly. Second was during a late night at our house out in Cary…he recreated his dunk at Maryland with one of my roommates. Was hilarious. Can't mention what Inge did that night
