I'm curious, what vision of Biden's would y'all want to see with regard to gatherings/opening up society socially in the coming months?

What do you think is reasonable WRT timing and extent of gatherings based on having 18% of the US currently vaccinated, and with our current vaccination and virus trajectory?

Still waiting on your response. I notice you have completely ignored it. Now it's time to do the same to you.

That might would work except for the fact that you actually just responded to him.

What is there to respond to? Did I miss an actual good-faith conversation or question in that diatribe somewhere?

The government shouldn't be involved in telling people when they can or can't get together at all...

Do you understand that?

I know you like to get your barbs in when you can and I know you are protected so I am limited as to how I can respond. I mean you got away with a personal attack and nothing was done or said. I'll leave it at that.

Just a question. Why is it considered a barb when someone responds to you but not when you respond to someone else? I'm honestly curious. You jump at every single people here who doesn't align with the things you say. You call them socialist, lefties, etc etc and say everything you can to discredit, talk down to, etc to try to prove your point. When in your mind, does something go from a response to a barb? Is it only a barb when someone responds to you or is it ok for you to go on rants like you often do and that mkt be considered a barb?

In a time of global pandemic the government should be silent with respect to social distancing, which is maybe the most effectual way to combat viral spread?

A barb is the remark you made where I told him until he responded to my post I was ignoring him.

My "rants" are fact based. Sorry you don't like facing the facts and seeing what a clown show your party is.

SOCIALISTS, lefties etc.... it's a party name. Not a personal attack. I think you have been told that before already.

And if you mean I present my set of facts and stand by them you are correct. Again, show me where I have personally attacked an individual poster. I would be banned if that happened.

As far as the personal insult you made against me it is very telling that you completely ignored that. I even posted the rules of IPS about personal insults and attached it to the post you made.

To all of the posters on here with kids under 18 I hope you realize what the left has done to them today. The tax burden for the SOCIALIST wish list just dumped a $1.71 trillion dollar tab on them in 10 years from now. I hope the ones that voted for Sleepy Joe and the gang are put in state run homes by their kids for voting this clown show into office.

And I honestly from the bottom of my heart with all sincerity mean that.

The SOCIALIST PARTY is bailing out San Francisco to the tune of $1.5 BILLION after giving millions, $5 million I believe, to homeless in order to buy them alcohol, marijuana, opiates and provide them with hotels to stay in to use said drugs.

Way to go guys....way to go.

2022.... then 2024 I hope we change every damn rule, law in the land to make sure the SOCIALIST PARTY never sees power again.

What were the long term costs of not stimulating the economy enough after the Great Recession?

How does the cost of this stimulus compare to the risk of doing too little as we emerge from COVID?

If the economy comes roaring back quickly will you still be on here decrying what the left has 'done to us today'' or will you be screaming and shaking your fist at the sky about whatever new SOCIALIST PARTY affront you're furious about that day?
CIv, the latest "Covid relief bill" is a massive boondoggle no matter how you slice it. I'm sorry but comparing this to the great recession just does not work. If we had passed nothing, the economy would still come "roaring back" in a few months when vaccines have been given to most Americans. Some parts of the bill may add some fuel, but most of the effect was already going to be there.

Certain things in this were good, or partially good. Unemployment benefits, PPP payments, aid for bars and restaurants, etc. I can quibble with details around this, but they are largely needed. However this covers less than 25% of the total cost.

Other items are largely a massively inefficient use of government spending. I'll summarize a few of the major points.

First, direct stimulus payments. Most Americans have kept their job this entire pandemic, with the job losses being heavily skewed towards low paid service employees. However those low paid workers have already been made whole (often more than that) by the unemployment extensions. There are people who have lost income, not made whole by unemployment, but this is a fairly small minority who could be targeted much better than sending checks to 90% of households.

The economist's argument for stimulus is that when there is not enough capital to satisfy pent up demand, additional capital can spur consumer spending and lead to a multiplier effect throughout the economy. But we largely do not have a capital problem. In 2020, Americans saved more money than ever before and reduced debt levels to record lows. They had money (yes supplemented by previous stimulus), but what they didn't have was something to spend it on. The lockdowns and fear of covid are what is currently suppressing demand. When we are able to vaccinate everyone who wants one, you will see a surge in spending that would have happened regardless of this round of stimulus.

Next, $350 billion went to state and local governments with another $100 billion+ to various government organizations like local public transit. This was completely unnecessary. Only half the states are even facing deficits right now. Many haven't spend funds previously allocated from prior rounds of covid relief.

Then $130 billion to K-12 schools, regardless of if they use the money to reopen. Most of the money won't even be disbursed this year, so saying it related to Covid just doens't hold water. This part of the bill was an olive branch to teacher's unions.

Finally, the rest of the bill is a large pile of steaming special interests. I won't get into every detail, but there is so much pork here. $75 billion goes to shoring up pension funds that were asking for a bailout pre-covid. We have pet infrastructure projects for CA and NY.

All very fair points, and I share in your concerns about many of them.

I absolutely think it's fair to assess lessons learned (if any) from more limited stimulus and much slower recovery of the Great Recession relative to our current circumstance. I'm not saying the causes or fixes are at apples to apples, but that doesn't mean there's zero to be gleaned from our actions and inactions emerging from the GR.

I was mainly prodding BBW to conduct a deeper analysis than "think of the churren/Sleepy Joe/SOCIALIST/Sleepy Joe is buying homeless people drugs and alcohol/SOCIALIST.

We can, and often do, better on this board. The tenor and analysis in your post is a prime example of what we need more of here.

I'll try to respond more regarding the substance of your post tonight, it's got a lot of great content in it.

I don't mind the government putting in their two cents but when they go from recommendations to doing things like forcing businesses to close because of some contrived rules that weren't voted on i take issue with that

Agree. I think (hope?) we'll have learned next time around what's effectual and what's not. I think business closures is not very effectual (although certain stipulations like reducing density, etc. can be debated) AND closures come at a very high emotional and financial cost.

If you were to make a 'COVID remedy value proposition' metric, low efficacy/high cost solutions need to be avoided.

I'm not trying to bang the mask drum, I'm just using this as an example - but masks are something like "moderate efficacy/nearly free" which is part of why I think they make so much sense. You want as many moderate or high efficacy/low or moderate cost solutions as possible.

I would like for someone to, state the clause, in the constitution, that gives the Federal Government the power to pass the stimulus bill...

You can absolutely appropriate a constitutional bill. You need to look for the power, in the constitution, that authorizes the federal government. Once that power is recognized, then you can appropriate the dollars...

Here's a question to all the liberals, democrats, SOCIALISTS etc...... You ignore the points that I make. You ignore the fact that the questions I ask may make you uncomfortable. You claim not to answer when I am rude. That's fine. I understand. I may offend you.

Answer this. And I will have more to back this up.

We have no snakes on our island. We made sure we ran them out. I'm third generation removed Irish. I'll call it like I see it. And from what I'm seeing......well.... let's see out it works itself out.

Gas prices up $0.80 / Gallon (for Regular) since the election and $0.90 / Gallon since early last fall here on the SE North Carolina coast. Premium was at $3.999 yesterday afternoon at my local station.

This is following a record number of direct hit hurricanes in the Gulf last summer without even one price spike in our area as a result. Prior to Trump there was a price spike every single time a hurricane even thought about making landfall in the Gulf.

Waiting for my lefty friend and his chart again.

We all see correlation. That's low-hanging fruit. Dive deeper. Where's the causation?

Think any of the following may be playing a role in increased prices:

1. OPEC not increasing supply in accordance with steadily increasing demand
2. Refinery production getting hammered by a generational winter storm
3. Positive viral spread and vaccination trends significantly increasing travel confidence and boosting travel demand
4. There being only one way for prices to go but up from last fall, at a historic trough in gas prices at the height of the virus' impact

Also, prices are not even yet back at where they where pre-pandemic much less approaching the peak of gas prices during Trump's presidency.

But, Biden!!1

That's not true. Gas prices were not this high even pre pandemic. At least not in several years.

We will have to do a full summary of Biden when these first 100 days are up. So far he's got a hell of a border crisis on his hands that the democrats themselves created. We had no such crisis under Trump. This might be his biggest issue so far. He's got a congress that he has worked with and signed off on a massive partisan spending bill that was titled as covid relief and had very little to do with covid. He is talking about tax hikes to support more spending. He's promoting abortion at expense of taxpayers. He has pissed on the energy sector already with the pipeline closing and promise to end fracking. The entire administration operates like a shadow. Biden makes almost no appearances, has had no press conferences, and this is the first time I can ever remember there not being a SOTU or what you call the address to the joint session of congress when you're new president.

Of course Biden is just a face he's not really the one running anything. It's essentially an Obama 3rd term via Susan Rice, Obama, and other big wigs in the administration.

Just going to throw it out there, cause my company is suffering through some of the side affects. The Texas power outages hurt gas and oil and their by products big time. We were getting daily emails on which facilities down there were shut down due to power outages, conditions, etc. My company uses resin these places produce, supply went way down-- same thing with gas supply. You guys know how supply and demand works.

That's fair and makes sense. But now as things get cleaned up and supply gets ramped back up hopefully prices normalize.

Wrong.

$2.59/gal last month (average).

$2.63/gal Jan 2020.

$2.95/gal May 2019.

Peak during Trump's presidency was $2.99/gal in May 2018.

Regardless, what has Biden done or not done to drive up the price of gas?

Fair to say it. Just can't put blinders on what other thing effect it. We are likely a few months before we get supplies back in order.

Nope. We are back into the "anything happens anywhere" and we get gouged days... funny how we didn't get gouged after a single Gulf of Mexico hurricane this past year.

The difference here is policy and the steady advancements that Trump had made during his four (4) years that limited our dependency on foreign oil. Policy and advancements that were immediately reversed by the lefty's (just like the progress at the border).

When I posted yesterday morning the price for Regular that I was referencing was $2.599... yesterday afternoon I passed by a different station about 4 miles way from my home station and theirs was $2.679 for Regular... both branded, different brands (Exxon v BP).

Lefty's and some of the posts here trying to spin anything other than the truth... Eyes wide shut.
