Biden to bar most non US citizens from several countries
Travel ban

"President Biden is expected to ban most non-U.S. citizens traveling from South Africa from entering the U.S. due to the COVID-19 variant recently discovered there.
A top Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) official https://www.reuters.com/article/us-health-coronavirus-usa-travel-exclusi/exclusive-b[%E2%80%A6" class="postlink " target="_blank">vel-ban-to-combat-new-covid-19-variant-cdc-idUSKBN29T0P6?il=0]told Reuters in an interview that Biden will restrict entry for travelers who are not U.S. citizens and have visited South Africa within the last two weeks.
The president also plans to restore the ban for almost all non-U.S. citizen travelers who had been in Brazil, the U.K., Ireland and 26 countries in Europe. Former President Trump had cleared the travel restrictions for dozens of countries to be lifted on Tuesday, but Biden's move will prevent the bans from ending. "

The newly appointed director of the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention warned Sunday that the federal government remains in the dark about just how much vaccine is currently available and warned that states like New York won't be able to quickly replenish its limited supply.
"One of the biggest problems right now is I can't tell you how much vaccine we have, and if I can't tell it to you then I can't tell it to the governors and I can't tell it to the state health officials," Dr. Rochelle Walensky told "Fox News Sunday."
Walensky added the government does not "have as many doses as we would like now for states like New York [or] for other states that are claiming to have run out of vaccine."

Biden to repeal Trump's ban on transgender people joining military

WASHINGTON (Reuters) - President Joe Biden is poised to repeal his predecessor Donald Trump's ban on transgender people enlisting in the U.S. military, a person familiar with the matter said.
The source, who spoke to Reuters anonymously because the action is not yet public, said Biden could lift the ban as soon as Monday. The White House did not immediately respond to a request for comment.
The plan marks the latest effort by the Biden administration to roll back many of Trump's policies.
Trump announced the ban in July 2017, reversing a landmark decision by his predecessor, Barack Obama, which allowed transgender people to serve openly and receive medical care to transition genders.

President Joe Biden is confronting the political risk that comes with grand ambition.

As one of his first acts, Biden offered a sweeping immigration overhaul last week that would provide a path to U.S. citizenship for the estimated 11 million people who are in the United States illegally. It would also codify provisions wiping out some of President Donald Trump's signature hard-line policies, including trying to end existing, protected legal status for many immigrants brought to the U.S. as children and crackdowns on asylum rules.

Indeed, Democrats haven't always universally lined up behind an immigration overhaul, arguing that it could lead to an influx of cheap labor that hurts U.S. workers. Some of the party's senators joined Republicans in sinking Bush's bill.

Still, Latinos haven't forgotten past immigration failures and have often blamed Democrats more than Republicans.

There's reason to think that the US economy is becoming increasingly fragile, unchecked mass illegal immigration could be a destabilizing factor. Under the new USMCA agreement, Mexico doesn't need a tanked US economy, so they might think that choking off Central American refugee floods is in Mexico's best interest. Time will tell.

17 EOs on Day1

Executive Order 1:
Require masks on federal property
Biden is ordering a nationwide mask-wearing and social-distancing mandate on federal lands, in federal buildings, and for federal employees and contractors.

Executive Order 2:
Rejoin the World Health Organization
Reversal of Trump Order
Biden canceled Trump's move to withdraw the country from the World Health Organization and, in an early show of commitment to the global health body, sent infectious disease expert Anthony Fauci to speak at the WHO's virtual board meeting Thursday morning.

Executive Order 3:
Set up a Covid office that reports directly to Biden
Reversal of Trump Order
Biden created a White House Covid-19 response team, led by Jeff Zients, that will coordinate across the federal government and with states on ramping up vaccinations, distributing more masks and gloves, expanding testing capacity, reopening schools and more. This order also reestablishes the National Security Council's directorate for global health security and biodefense an office disbanded by the Trump administration.

Executive Order 4:
Extend foreclosure and eviction moratoriums
Biden directed key agencies, including the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention; the Department of Veterans Affairs; the Department of Agriculture; the Department of Housing and Urban Development; and the Federal Housing Finance Agency to extend the current pause on federal evictions and foreclosures through at least the end of March.

Executive Order 5:
Freeze student debt collection
Biden is immediately directing the Education Department to continue to freeze monthly payments and interest on most federal student loans until "at least" Sept. 30.

Climate
Executive Order 6:
Rejoin the Paris climate accords
Reversal of Trump Order
Biden signed an order to rejoin the Paris climate accords that President Trump exited last year, sending the United Nations a document that will make the U.S. party to the agreement in 30 days. The international pact aims to push all countries to slash their greenhouse gas emissions.

Executive Order 7:
Revoke the permit for the Keystone XL pipeline and cancel other Trump administration energy rules
Reversal of Trump Order
Biden revoked the presidential permit for the $8 billion Keystone XL pipeline that would have transported fossil fuels from Canada across the United States -- a project climate activists have protested for years. The order also directs federal agencies to start reversing and revising other Trump administration rules, including restoring protections and banning drilling in several national parks and national monuments and setting stricter emissions and fuel economy standards for vehicles.

Racial Justice
Executive Order 8:
Nix the 1776 Commission
Reversal of Trump Order
Biden terminated the Trump administration's 1776 Commission, a project aimed at promoting a more conservative history curriculum in U.S. schools that existed for only a few months. The group released a report on Martin Luther King Jr. Day that contained several inaccuracies and paragraphs lifted from other published works. This executive order also directs all federal agencies to create an action plan within 200 days to "address unequal barriers to opportunity in agency policies and programs." It also undoes the Trump administration's policy that prohibited federal contractors and some grant recipients that conduct "any form of race or sex stereotyping," including diversity training.

Immigration
Executive Order 9:
Unwind Trump's changes to the census
Reversal of Trump Order
Biden signed an order revoking the Trump administration efforts to exclude undocumented immigration from the U.S. census, a change that would have weakened federal representation for diverse areas generally represented by Democrats. The order also ensures that census takers have enough time to obtain an accurate count of the population, reversing the Trump administration's move to cut the work short.

Executive Order 10:
Strengthen legal protections for "Dreamers"
Reversal of Trump Order
Biden directed the secretary of Homeland Security, in consultation with the attorney general, to take actions to shore up the Obama-era Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals (DACA) program that shielded hundreds of thousands of young immigrants from deportation. The Trump administration tried to abolish the program but was stopped by federal courts.

Executive Order 11:
Abolish the "Muslim ban"
Reversal of Trump Order
Biden got rid of the Trump administration's ban on people from several majority Muslim countries entering the United States, a policy the new administration blasted as "rooted in religious animus and xenophobia." The order also instructs the State Department to restart visa processing for the countries affected by the ban.

Executive Order 12:
Cancel the Trump administration's interior enforcement rule
Reversal of Trump Order
Biden revoked a Trump executive order that massively expanded immigration officials' interior enforcement work and broadened the categories of who they should try to detain and deport. His acting DHS secretary then issued a memo pausing deportations for 100 days beginning on Jan. 22.

Executive Order 13:
Halt construction of the U.S.-Mexico border wall
Reversal of Trump Order
Biden declared an immediate termination of the national emergency declaration that the Trump administration used to divert federal funding to building the U.S.-Mexico border wall, and ordered a pause on its construction while the new administration reviews the funding and contracts.

Executive Order 14:
Extend deportation protections for Liberians
Reversal of Trump Order
Biden signed an order extending the Deferred Enforced Departure (DED) designation for Liberians who have been in the United States for many years until June 30, 2022, shielding them from deportation and extending their work authorization until then. Trump had threatened to terminate the program, which would have put the status of about 4,000 Liberians in jeopardy.

LGBT Rights
Executive Order 15:
Ban workplace discrimination against LGBT employees
Biden signed an executive order making it clear that his administration interprets the Civil Rights Act of 1964 as prohibiting workplace discrimination on the basis of sexual orientation and gender identity. The order also directs federal agencies to make sure existing laws banning sex discrimination also prohibit discrimination against gay, bisexual and transgender workers.

Government
Executive Order 16:
Implement an ethics pledge for all executive branch officials
Biden signed an ethics pledge and ordered every appointee in the executive branch to do so as well. The pledges cover both a ban on political interference with the Justice Department and a ban on all officials using their office for their own personal gain.

Executive Order 17:
Freeze Trump's "midnight regulations"
Reversal of Trump Order
Biden signed an order that will freeze all Trump administration regulations currently in process, blocking them from taking effect while the new administration reviews them.

He indicated he would reverse a Trump administration rollback in federal automotive fuel economy standards to reduce greenhouse gas emissions, work to stiffen oversight of aviation safety as the troubled Boeing 737 Max makes its return to the skies and encourage use of electric vehicles, such as by adding a half-million charging stations nationwide.

Buttigieg did not specify where money could come from for big investments in infrastructure, and wouldn't rule out a tax increase. He floated the possibility of a major change in how highways are funded, such as by converting from the current Highway Trust Fund, which is paid for through the gas tax, to a "vehicle miles traveled" alternative that would tax drivers based on their road mileage.

He was expected to issue a presidential memorandum Thursday, allowing FEMA to reimburse expenses for emergency supplies to reopen schools, including personal protective gear or cleaning materials, officials said. They did not specify how much money would be available from FEMA. Last week, Biden asked Congress for $130 billion to cover a range of school reopening expenses as part of his larger relief package.

The president also signed an executive order intended to provide guidance to help schools, child-care providers and higher education operate safely. The White House plan calls for an expansion of coronavirus testing in schools, to try to give teachers and parents more confidence in reopening buildings. Still, this executive order will encourage the Federal Communications Commission to increase support for students who lack reliable Internet service at home, which is needed for remote learning.

President Joe Biden has replaced the controversial White House physician who offered misleading information about President Donald Trump's coronavirus diagnosis last fall.

A White House official said Biden had selected Dr. Kevin O'Connor to replace Dr. Sean Conley as his doctor. It's not uncommon for a president to name his own physician when taking office, though his two most recent predecessors each retained the incumbent doctor who had attended the men who served before them.

Can't get on board with this. Transgenders should be free to do mostly whatever anyone else does, but there has to be some limits.
If you're biologically a man, you shouldn't be able to say "Man, I feel like a woman" and play women's sports.

You might well have your "wires crossed" because Mother Nature DOES screw up sometimes. It happens. It's no different than being born missing a hand or being deaf or whatever. "Not as nature intended".

But there has to be a line somewhere, and while I'm sorry some folks aren't "as nature intended"....if you are a man with a woman inside you? Sorry, you can't play women's sports. Not fair to the women.

A dude with born with one arm can't serve in the Army. A blind person can't be a pilot. And a biological guy whose wires are crossed can't play women's sports. Seems pretty simple to me.

I would assume that it's delegated to a relatively mid-level person to lead the effort, I don't think anyone in the administration is actively focusing on it. At least that's my guess.

This is well meaning, but terrible policy that will blow up in his face sometime in the next few years. It reminds me of the Title IX changes Biden pushed under Obama. They resulted in hundreds of lawsuits, which universities usually lost, and DeVos eventually repealed them.
