Virginia Foxx is a republican so Hines must be trying to primary her.mrcpack17 said:
Is Foxx retiring? Or is he primarying her? Assuming that he is an R based on his video but please correct me if I'm wrong on that assumption.
Tough to say. Trump voters are none too happy with NC GOP Congress critters just now, maybe Hines got wind of that and decided there's an opening.Cornpack said:

Not a knock on the guy, I'm just curious why go through the process to get the degree if you are planning on being a career legislator? I'm not super familiar with NC-5, is there someone he is worried about replacing Foxx who could be there for a long time and he is running now to avoid having to wait for them to lose or move on? Or is he just trying to get name ID to be able to run for something bigger on the state-wide level? I totally get the ambition and recognize he definitely has a future in the field, the circumstances and timing are just weird to me.

The MAGA agenda? Christ almighty...best thing that can happen is for the Republican party to distance itself as far from Trump as possible. As someone who VERY reluctantly voted for him this time (mostly b/c I don't think Biden will make it a full term and Harris was a horrible selection as VP), I do think there are some things they should continue with - seeking peace in the middle east through legitimate countries instead of Palestinians, various prison reform initiatives, "drain the swap" that never actually happened, some immigration stances though I think they were too discriminatory in some instances...I don't think these were realized or codified enough but a decent foundation was laid and I think this needs to be carried forward.ncsualum05 said:
Who cares that he's young? The days of old mundane congresspersons are coming to an end. The GOP needs young fighters with spirit. They need young reps that follow the MAGA agenda. I hope Bo realizes this. Virginia Foxx is fine but she's 77 and has no fight in her. She's been up there way too long. We need to get rid of the geriatrics in our gov't, they're causing most of the issues. But we also need young grounded people to fight the young psychotic socialists. The time for congressional civility is over and has been.
As a conservative that felt the party of Trump did not align with my values, I concur. Get away from that mess, please.griff17matt said:The MAGA agenda? But Trump sullied a lot of his accomplishments trying to appeal to some "base" that was obviously full of the kind of people the US President shouldn't give the time of day. I feel the same way about Biden/Dems and Antifa. It's just a really bad look to give the okay to deranged individuals that espouse violent, hateful, amoral rhetoric regardless of what side of the aisle they are on politically.
You just described some things you liked about the MAGA agenda. It's not just about Trump. If you don't like the term you can call it the America First agenda. Or if the GOP ever gets off it's ass and does what is right... the GOP agenda.griff17matt said:The MAGA agenda? See my post below about the agenda. What values did you have that didn't align? I'm not talking about his personality which I can understand that being a turn off. I'm talking about the forest through the trees here. The agenda. The way the country was run.PackPA2015 said:As a conservative that felt the party of Trump did not align with my values, I concur. How do you feel about....
Peace through strength, solid military but no new wars, historic middle east peace (check)
Prison reform (check)
Strong immigration stance and curbing illegal immigration (check although you thought it went a bit far at times)
Renegotiating better trade deals
Standing up to other countries to start paying what they had contractually promised in world organizations
Energy independence
Lower taxes and regulations (also important to note that with the tax legislation also came opportunity zones for poorly developed areas as well as a much better child tax credit for families)
Taking a hard stance on China
And I could go on.
I respect this response and sounds like you would be ok for the most part with going back to this agenda minus Trump himself. Although Trump will very much be in the center of this one way or another for some time to come. But the alternative is so much worse. The alternative is what we are getting now and it's about to get really bad.griff17matt said:ncsualum05 said:You just described some things you liked about the MAGA agenda. It's not just about Trump. 1. Yes, please, keep this going regardless of who is in charge.
2. Yes, but I feel this was Trump being a Dem at heart b/c this isn't really a GOP platform. They seem to be in big with for-profit prisons, which is a horrible idea.
3. Yes, but this is an easy place for the left to level racism accusations. A heavy handed approach here leaves you open for easy attacks. If this was done by someone with more diplomacy and who provided actual data points, I think it would have been easier to digest or at least harder to attack.
4. This is debatable. How are they better? I'm generally not a fan of tariffs as they tend to trickle down to the consumer. Did it change anything from China? Did it help us in any way? I will freely admit my ignorance here so I'd welcome some data that shows our current trade deals are better than what was in place.
5. Yes, the UN is a toothless bumble at this point and we're just propping it up for whatever reason while they vilify us at every turn
6. Assuming you mean oil here? Not sure I've heard anything where we are less dependent on ME countries for oil now than in the past. Maybe you're referring to fracking for natural gas? I dunno. Biden sure as hell killed that on day 1 though.
7. Eh, lower taxes with the same or increased spending is just pandering to idiots. Regulations are necessary in places and unnecessary in other places. Anti-regulation as a blanket policy is not a valid stance for a political party that wants to survive.
8. Hard stance on China would have been better if it came with a hard stance on Russia and North Korea too.
MAGA needs to hit the trash can as a slogan. It's tainted. Figure something else out because now people associate MAGA with racists and insurrections, regardless if that should be warranted or not. Trump has no one to blame but himself for that one. All I'm saying is that these platforms NEED to be divorced from Trump if they have any hope of taking hold with over half the US population.
I respect your response as well.PackPA2015 said:
First, I appreciate the opportunity to discuss/debate rather than jumping to some of the vitriolic conversations on other threads. Thanks for that!
Watching those first Republican debates before Trump's term, I knew I could not place my name beside his candidacy. I consider myself a Christian and try to frame all of my thoughts and beliefs through that lens. The way Trump belittled and came up with childish names for his opponents was just frustrating. Professionalism and words matter. I want my president to hopefully have those values as well. Trump has a really bad character flaw in hasty generalizations. He has labeled large people groups in negative ways too many times to count. You can't love people and call them criminals because of where they were born or the color of their skin. I do believe immigration should be made easier to help lower illegal immigration. Building a wall does nothing to curb that, in my opinion. I do believe black lives matter. I don't think that should lead to riots, but I hear my black friends and co-workers talk about being discriminated against and I don't have to deal with that because I am white. Trump only threw gas on that open fire.
Did he help the economy? Seems to have, but to me that is not the only thing I am concerned with.
I am a healthcare provider and the handling of the pandemic was not great. There were multiple times he lied or fudged the truth and that bothered me tremendously. He never learned, or did not care, that his words were so powerful and some folks would follow them to the ends of the earth. Then, he said that doctors were coding for COVID to make more money and that was the final nail in the coffin. Just totally false and damaging to my relationship with my patients.
To be honest, I don't necessarily always think small increases in taxes are a bad thing. If that money is used to benefit people who need it more than me, I am okay with that. I understand congress does not always help in that way.
Trump did some positive things and some of those align with conservative values, but when pushed by the left, he went further right. The Republican party has some soul searching to do and I hope that it does not end up in the MAGA arena.
What I meant was that he would say he did in public. I didn't mean his actions always matched. But nobody's does anyway. I'm pretty crappy myself.PackPA2015 said:
I don't necessarily think that Trump was a Christian outwardly. Again, his words and actions often times did not match those of Jesus. Not saying mine do 100% of the time either, but I don't know that I would make that claim for Trump.
It's ok to not like the person but in terms of an America First policy I thoroughly support it.PackPA2015 said:
I misunderstood what your claim was in the previous post. I won't derail the thread. I just think that the party of Trump did not align with me. Moving on from that would benefit the Republican party in many ways, in my opinion. Trump brought a lot of negativity upon himself and his beliefs whether right or wrong.

I think that depends.....if you get us knuckleheads involved asking questions it turns into a cluster.
