Speaking of the pitching injuries, it seems we have had more tha. our fair share of those over the last 3-5 years. I don't follow the other team in the ACC so much, but have others had the amount of pitching injuries we have during that time?

The national pitcher of the year last year for UNC threw 102 innings in 15 starts coming off Tommy John.
Coastal lost two top 5 round picks this year from their staff.
It's not an NC State problem. I think of guys that threw real innings (including SVD even though he didn't throw a ton) State has had 3 TJ guys in 5 years. Willadsen, SVD, Dudan.
I might be forgetting someone.

Didn't. a Dam also have a UCL and then there was whatever injury D Smith had. Seems a pretty good number but maybe other teams have had similar numbers to important guys.

SVD = Shane Van Dam.
Have heard from folks I trust that Smith dealt with the yips after a minor injury. Highfill hurt his back in the offseason. I mean that's stuff you can't control.

Missed the SVD. like I said, probably other teams have had similar but man it just seems like more than our fair share the last several years.

I'd be shocked if Avent actually agreed to this, but I'd really consider going with an opener with Andrew's and Hemerick if I were the staff.
They can both get through a lineup once but it's dicey after that. Let an opener throw to the heart of the lineup and then piggyback them.
NC State will not be hosting, and Lafayette over NC State remains the biggest upset / anomaly of the season.

Lafayette is 12-33. They went a combined 1-21 in non-Q4 (0-15 in Q3 per NET) games... this was the only win. https://t.co/0bVgR6uNpb
ecu lost a few too. One in mop up duty just getting reps.....according my brother ... ecu grad/golfer 20 plus years agoAlex Gee said:jpack71 said:

It's a combination of things. Losing two guys who you were planning on accounting for 45% of your innings pitched each weekend really hurts.
Playing from behind hurts. When you're already thin you can't throw Nance in a game you're losing 6-4.
Manuel, Kitchings, Black, Heintz. All of these guys have showed potential but just haven't been good.
Then this staff relied way too much on Dudan and Mahron in the weak non conference. No reason they should have been throwing 110 pitches against Princeton. Should have taken that time to develop some younger guys.
New opportunity.

Last five years we have used like 10 pitchers when you really think about it.

Even with Dudan and Marohn this pen is a mess. Too many guys who are misses because of lack of command.

Getting to use 2 of Consiglio/Hemric/Andrews as bullpen arms in addition to Nance & Garino is as good top end as many ACC teams.
Plus, you likely get to use Nance 2x a weekend more often vs. one extended outing if he's following Marohn on Fridays first out.
Then you get the emergence of a young guy like Ragusa and you have as good of a weekend rotation and bullpen as you can ask for.
Look at UNC as the shining example - Decaro is good (Marohn is better IMO). We will probably see Lynch tonight and Dudan blows him away. Then they have Boaz next who is no good at all. Behind that they have two guys in Glauber (Nance > slightly IMO) & McDuffie (Better than Garino for sure, but better than Cig?) who throw 2-3 times a weekend and Matthijs who is just solid, but doesn't blow you away and doesn't pitch very often. They've won 21 conference games and are 2nd in the country with 5 guys throwing 84% of their innings.

The offense has not been good enough, plain and simple. McHugh, RF, and DH have been abysmal. There's really nothing else to it.

When fully healthy I think the two pitching staffs are pretty even.
The difference is the offense. Your staff has given you a chance in just about every series even with the injuries.
The GT series is the perfect example. How many teams have the horses to hold them to 9 runs in the first two games at their place. Yet you lose both games 3-1 and 6-4.
UNC wins the first two games against GT because their offense was able to score 5 runs in the first game and 14 in the second.

Honestly I'd take Glauber and McDuffie over Nance and Garino in a heartbeat (Especially this year), but I get your argument.
UNC just needs a lead after six innings with those two guys and it is basically over. That is the biggest difference between having 2-3 really good bullpen arms and just one who you are trying to figure out when to throw.
McDuffie looks like a kid who was thrown in a locker in HS but he can pitch.

Full strength I think State has a significant edge with the starters and UNC has an edge with the bullpen, but not as significant.
Point being that State with a fully healthy pitching staff doesn't have anywhere close to a disastrous bullpen.
I'm taking Nance for 2 innings over a ton of guys.
