Relax guy. Just wouldn't call it a problem. I remember when Tommy white thought he was a 3rd baseman. Now that was a problem. Short and 3rd are generally going to have the most errors. Sherm is one of the best hitters on the team and needs to be somewhere. We got bigger issues than him being our worst infielder on a really good fielding team.

To be fair, Tommy White didn't play much 3rd base here. His fielding percentage in his one year here was .934. Our defense at 3B this year has been awful

He got mad he was wasn't getting a shot at 3rd so he played a couple games there and was awful. ended pulling a hamstring fielding a bunt as I recall.

Correct. He played more at first base then 3rd while in Raleigh but he hit 27 homers and had 74 RBI's. Now his fielding percentage his first year at LSU was .858 and bad, but he provided 24 homers and 105 RBI's. His second year at LSU(not sure if he played 3rd or 1st) was much better .971. He also provided 24 homers and 70 RBI's. His 3 collegiate years he had a .924 total fielding percentage, but again look at what he provided all three years at the plate. Sherman Johnson is a good hitter, but he is no Tommy White.

I agree that our 3b defense has been awful this year. Other wise the defense has been pretty good.

Hurt his shoulder diving for a ground ball. Never saw 3rd after that. EA was trying to prevent further injury. LSU traded his lack of defense for his offense. That team had enough around him they could get away with it.

Details of the Injury
  • When it Happened: During his standout freshman year at NC State, White suffered a shoulder injury while diving for a ball at third base against Radford on April 29, 2022.
  • Impact: The injury forced him out of the remainder of that series. Although he returned to play, the shoulder issue continued to affect him, leading him to finish the season as a DH rather than in the field.
  • Transfer & Surgery: White later transferred to LSU, where it was revealed he played through a torn labrum in his right shoulder during the 2023 season. He underwent surgery after that season to address the issue.

Don't ruin the narrative on Tommy White.

Got his **** at 3rd on the national championship LSU team instead.

tommy's first year at LSU, he was AWFUL at 3rd, but his bat more than made up for it and that lineup was damn near defense proof. Never mind that pitching staff was amazing too. Either way, his fld% that year was .859 and the rest of the team played pretty clean D. Jay Johnson will park a bat at 3rd and not care about defense as he's shown with Jacob Berry before. He was bad too.

Regardless, Sherm is just fine at 3rd base, he can definitely clean some things up but let's remember this is his first full year at 3rd having played SS at JUCO and in HS. Why are we looking for things to complain about? Hell, if Tommy White can clean it up, he was really good his last year at LSU, then Sherman definitely can as well.

I really hate it for Elliott as this team (as usual with his teams) is full of scrappy dudes that can play some fkn ball and we got people here trying to piss and moan without acknowledging we're playing without our top 2 starters. That's a real problem and we're still in the post season hunt.

Exactly. I shouldn't have said we are "good" at third base. Fine at third base would be a better term. If WP was doing way better this year at third there would be an argument to DH Sherm every game but he hasn't. I have watched about every game this year and SJ doesn't stand out as terrible in comparison to what other teams are putting out there.

I'm a huge Sherman Johnson fan and my posting history will show that. It's fine to say his defense has been bad. I fully expect him to improve. The eye test shows you he has the ability to. Peifer should not touch the field. Only argument for playing him was that he brings better defense and that hasn't manifested.
