COMMIT ALERT: Baseball Adds Peifer From Portal

NC State landed a commitment from James Madison transfer infielder Wyatt Peifer on Wednesday afternoon.

Peifer is known for his glove and had 11 career home runs and a .768 OPS in 3 seasons at James Madison. His best season was in 2024 when he hit .305/.409/.495 and was part of the Dukes season that ended in the Raleigh regional final.

Had 6 HR last season. Looks like he wasn't an everyday player his first year, most of his production is from the past two seasons. If he is a starter for us I would bet he ends up a double digit HR guy. To me profiles similarly to other guys that have has a power jump under Hart.
Just a guy on the sunshine squad.

This kid literally just won the gold glove at 3rd base. AKA the best defensive 3rd baseman in the country. He can handle the bat too

edit- my mistake, he won it in 2024 it seems. Either way- elite glove

If he rekindles his 2024 mojo, along with working with Hart, this could be a great pickup. If last season is a trend (poor slash line), then.......?

Hard to know, but he was coming off an injury going into last season. I'm leaning towards this guy having a solid season in 2026 in Raleigh.

Peifer led JMU in WAR this past year and was third in 2024 behind their 4th round pick and the guy who transferred to Vandy. His 3.75 WAR in 2024 would be highest we've brought in from the portal by over a point since D1 has been keeping track. AMak, Pennington, and Butterworth were all around 2.5 the year prior.

19 doubles in 2024 and 10 this past year, that is typically a good indicator of power potential. Turn a couple of those doubles into HR's and the power output changes quite a bit.

Absolutely an upgrade. Love what Heavner did, but in his 3 years at NC State he only had 11 extra base hits. The gloves are probably similar with Peifer has MUCH more upside with the bat.

We should have a really good defensive infield next year.

Hoping we can find some power. Having guys like A Mak and Pennington keeps you in every game you play.

I had this thought as well. If he can play short at high level than the power doesn't matter nearly as much.

If 65 is his graduating yr, then he's early 80s.... id hate everything too i suppose. Sucks to be so negative all the time though. Tiring

We love to assume players who come in from somewhere else are better than our own even if their production or pedigree doesn't say so. Let things play out. A guy with those numbers iat JMU isn't guaranteed a starting role.
