Good series win. 9-6 is a good solid start.
It is just hard to figure out who this team is. What is their identity? I think we all thought it would be pitching but honestly the offense has been more reliable than the pitching staff has.
I think there is enough offense and defense to get to a SR if the pitching staff can get it going with more consistency. The pieces are there.

It was a bad week for a lot of the teams we have already played 3x, since opponent's record is such a huge part of the RPI formula.

Canisius and Fordham combined to go like 1-8, and Fordham has lost like 10 in a row.
Duke/VT/Pitt lost series

The rest of our weekend opponents are ranked 63, 65, 5, 14, 28. Mid-week it's no one outside the top 125. Upward movement still can be significant.

It's going to take all pieces (a complete team effort) to get to a SR. Pitching has been the biggest issue. Dudan seems to be coming around. Sosa has one good game then 2 bad games. Still 5 ACC series left. Cal (away), Clemson, Miami (away), UNC (away), Stanford. Need to win 3 (possibly sweep) and steal some games for Clemson and UNC for seeding. Still have mid weeks games with ECU and UNCW (2)

Some pitching thoughts:
- I wouldn't give up on Willadsen for a Saturday spot to give us 5-6 solid innings. Let's see how that develops - would be stretching him out with midweek starts I think
- dudan and Shaffer provide an excellent 1-2 punch for 7th and 8th innings throughout a weekend. Can we get Smith back to cover the 9th. If not I move Shaffer to the closer role and have Dudan and Nance in the late inning high leverage roles.
- would be nice to get Consiglio going as a middle relief guy on weekends.

Disagree completely on Wiladsen. He's unfortunately not the same guy anymore and I hate it for him. He's got a 17 ERA and just gave up 4 runs in 1.1 innings on Friday. He's not competitive this season and we have too many other good options to allow him to work through it.

Huge win come selection Sunday

Baseball is definitely a funny game.
When I saw that UL had a dude batting seventh in the order that was hitting .300+ with 12 HRs, I didn't think this was going to be a successful weekend. Glad I was wrong.

I've said this numerous times on here but that first year back from TJ is always hit or miss and most guys are not the same until year two post surgery or so.

What is different about his stuff. He has always been 87-88 and still has a nasty change.

Numerically speaking a ton of stuff. He's got an ERA that is 4x from 23, batting average allowed is 140 points higher and hes striking out guys at a significantly lower clip (in small sample size obviously). I won't claim to say that i've seen more than 1-2 innings of a game he's pitched this year but he continues to get hit hard and not be effective. He's not the same guy this year that we have seen in teh past unfortunately.

Yeah I don't know if he is the same guy or not. He has really never pitched out of the pen. He is a starter type guy. The little bit I have seen of him looks the same. Nasty change and very mediocre fastball but he can locate. The game has changed since early in his career - it is much more power arms. But there are so many dudes out there - see UL this weekend making a mess of games with walks etc. I would see what he looks like in some midweek starts. He is a guy who has to be sharp with stuff and locating. I would just give him some midweek innings and see where it goes. If he can give you a solid 5 innings on Saturday it could be an option to consider.

I'd love to see him be able to do that. But nothing he's done this year has looked like he's even remotely close to being able to give you 2 innings in a midweek much less be a starter on the weekend. And I dot. See any way at this point in the season that he's going to be given a chance to prove otherwise. Would love to be proven wrong and he goes out and pitches 8 innings of 1 run ball in a regional to get us to a super but I just don't see it.
