Pitching has looked a lot better outside of Saturday. Still want to see how this team hits against better competition though. This team is going to have to hit with the lack of power I feel they don't have.
And the pitching was really good on Saturday until CK fell apart. Still hate pinch hitting McHugh when the game could've just ended with a base hit.
I checked this morning for kicks. This includes some really poor defensive plays that did not count as errors and were therefor scored as earned runs (Hogue in RF in JAX & Jaros bunt defense notably let in 3-5 runs "earned)
True rotation guys have a 2.56 combined ERA, excluding Dudan, with the highest being Consiglio who I doubt pitches at 4.15 all year. That's Fritton, Marohn, Andrews, Nance, Shaffner, Lucas, & Consiglio. The whole staff is down to 3.82 even with Dudan sitting over 9 and I think we all expect that to improve.
The starters are sitting at 2.02 on the season.
The rotation and staff in general been excellent about all year outside of walks IMO. I fear Doms stats are probably inflated and he has a blowup at some point but he looked very good last weekend. Smith has also yet to return and should help settle the pen if/when he does. Same with Matty but I'm not sure he takes anyone's spot in the rotation as of today.
The hitting worries me more, not sure there is enough power in the lineup to makeup for mistakes by the pitchers or defense.
Agreed with this, our pitchers have played with fire early in the season- namely Dom and Heath Andrews. Dom, especially, has gotten "lucky" with not giving up earned runs.
Both guys were great this past weekend, but including that game, Dom has a WHIP of 1.60 and Heath Andrews has given up 12 free passes (7 walks, 5 HBP) in 17 innings. Not a terrible number by Andrews, but considering guys are only hitting .138 against him, he clearly is good enough to be around the zone more.
Fix a couple of those things and see what happens. We were last in the ACC last year in walks per 9, we are too talented to be close to that this year IMO (and we don't have the offense to bail us out). Challenge hitters and see what happens, you can't defend a walk. The rest of the staff is shaping up to be very solid, as expected, but need to limit the free passes.
