Nixon 1B
Heavner BB (Nixon to 2B on SB)

Ossenfort F8
McHugh BB (Heavner to 3B on WP)

Nixon is fast, period. Good small ball from the Pack in the inning.

Pillsbury to P at State
Troch 1B
Harris BB (Troch to 2B on SB)
Johnson KS
DiGiacomo BB (Troch to 3B on SB, Harris out CS) (3-2)
DiPietrantonio BB (bases loaded)
Troch scores on WP (DiGiacomo to 3B, DiPietrantonio to 2B), 2-1 State
Slater 5-3

A cleaner pick on the wild pitch could've led to an out at the plate, but Pillsbury needed his pitches to land to avoid loading the bases.

Bechtel 3U
Woodson 1B
Head 1B (Woodson to 2B)
Nixon FC 4-6 (Woodson to 3B, Head safe at 2B, bases loaded)
Heavner 4-3 DP (Nixon out at 2B)

Woodson with great hustle to leg out an infield single. Huge missed opportunity to pad the lead.

Potts to P for State
Lougee E-4, to 2B
Bell KS (Lougee to 3B on WP)
Murray 1B (Lougee scores), 2-2
Troch 1B
Harris HR (Murray and Troch score), 5-2 Duke
Johnson 6-3
#48 KL (3-2)

Woodson's error gave the Devils a free RISP. Major miscommunication on Troch's bunt to allow an uncontested single. Harris crushed Potts' pitch into right field.

regardless of what happens in the last inning or so, plenty to be encouraged by despite the scores. the 3 guys who gave up runs (so far) are Dienes, Pillsbury and Potts. Not sure any of those dudes would be in our top 10-12 arms, so they didn't score off our "mid-tier" guys (respectfully). Of course, I am putting Dudan, Smith, Fritton, Consiglio, Marohn, etc in the top tier.

According to twitter and here (thanks again to DW for updates), Lucas had a strong inning. Wimbish had a big inning. Shaffner was solid. Nance had a nice inning. Andrews worked around some hits. All encouraging signs.

Seems like the starting defense was fine/good. Gotta tinker with the lineup it seems, get Hogue heathy and keep getting younger dudes reps.

edit to add- carson kelly had a good outing too. going to be a nice piece if he can put it all together, last couple of years for kelly hasn't been great after a nice freshman year.

Duke wins the second scrimmage by four.

Avent said there was a lot of work to do before the season, but he made a point to shout out the team's base running. We'll have video from him later tonight.

As a JUCO kid, I'd wager that Eli Pillsbury was brought in to have a role in our top 10-12 arms.

No arguments here, I definitely think he would be right in that range, and being a lefty he might have more of an opportunity. According to the twitter, he has nice stuff, just needs to harness it.

I had read back when Jaros committed that he wasn't cleared to swing until October. Looks ahead of schedule. Need his bat at third. He had worked his way into the lineup at GT as a freshman before the injury. I really like his potential.

He just starting swinging this week so he is on schedule. Been able to work in the field just not in the box yet
