I hoped to have him available for long relief later, which is still possible depending on how long he goes tonight. There's an argument to be made for keeping everyone in the same routine when you've been going along really well, which I imagine is why he's starting.

There's absolutely something to be said for routine (I.e tonight as the "meaningless" mid week game) and keeping the foot on the gas mentally no matter who shows up. Avent knows this team infinitely better than any of us do

some really good plate approaches by State early on. State batters simply don't swing at bad pitches. That puts a lot of pressure on opposing pitchers...this dude is pitching his ass off and he's already at 50 pitches in the top of the third with no outs.

Chase Nixon and Soles are such pros. They do not swing at bad pitches and it's a huge boost to make the opposing pitchers throw a ton of pitches.

This is exactly what I was thinking. I don't know if the 10 run rule is in effect for the tourney but if so that would be awesome to get out of here fast and call it a quick day.
