If we can take 2 of 3 from Wake I don't see any scenario where we are not hosting.

Same. Win the series and it's a lock to host. A sweep plus an ACC tournament run opens the door for a top 8 national seed.

Wake looked good. They seem to have found their groove too.

This will not be an easy series.

As Alex mentioned, they are a product of their home field. Their home field is slightly bigger than the softball fields at Walnut Creek lol. Home, 26-7. Away, 10-8. Neutral, 0-1.
I asked a ref if he could give me a technical foul for thinking bad things about him. He said, of course not. I said, well, I think you stink. And he gave me a technical. You can't trust em. Jim Valvano.

Won't argue about their park, but I'm pretty sure the fences didn't change when Clemson batted.

It's going to be tough. Will be nice to win it.

While I don't disagree with the point of Wake's home field working to their advantage, the Pack is 22-7 at home and 7-12 on the road. Bottom line, most teams are just better at home.

Let's go get another ranked series win.

I have plans to be out there Saturday, but just a heads up, they are calling for rain.

Doesn't look good for playing on Saturday. Maybe they'll play two on Friday. Course, if we win the first two, maybe we'll just forget to put the tarp on.

I think the toughest game in the series will be the Thursday night game. State will have to face Chase Burns (Tennessee transfer) and he has been really good all season (season ERA of 2.85). He has had 10 games with 10+ strikeouts per game and in his last three games, he has averaged 14 strikeouts a game. His fastball has been 100 to 100+ regularly throughout the season and if he gets it to move (that has been his issue this season - lack of movement on it), he can pile up the strikes. If it is not moving, he will definitely give up hits and this is where he has gotten in trouble throughout the season.

I think State will have a potential for more success on Friday and Saturday, assuming Burns pitches well on Thursday. Wake has struggled to find consistency in their day 2 and day 3 weekend pitchers. Josh Hartle has dropped off this year and Wake has been moving him around in the lineup all season. Last weekend against Clemson, they moved him to Sunday and he had one of his best games of the year (9 strikeouts, 4 hits, 3 runs, 1 HR and 1 BB). I will not be surprised if Wake keeps him in the same slot and he pitches on Saturday this weekend.

The weather could pose a problem for the Saturday game. It is currently forecast to be the wettest day of the weekend with rain expected throughout the day. It is a shame, since Saturday will be Senior Day, so hopefully they can get the game in. Hopefully, they are able to get the ballgame played.

The weird thing is both teams play the game in the same stadium. Both teams have the same opportunity to hit the ball over the walls. I guess the opposing players just develop claustrophobia when they play in Wake's tiny stadium.

I have no idea how Wake has built their team. What I do know is that in baseball teams are built around their stadium all the time. So yes both teams play each other in the same park but in a small park, as an example, you may have more fly ball hitters than in a large park where maybe you play faster single hitting guys.

So when a team like wake goes on the road in a larger park those hr may be just long fly outs.

Yup. If you play in a park with a short porch in RF, you build your lineup and pitching rotations around that. Yes, the other team is playing on the same field, but over the course of three days, that likely benefits the purpose built home team more.

Reagan High in Pfafftown played at the Couch in the first round of the State playoffs. They won on a walkoff grand slam. Right field and right center are shorter at the Couch than Reagan's field. What I am saying is, the Couch is so small that better than average high school kids can hit multiple home runs in the same game. Pathetic.

No, Wake has players built for the small ball park. That's why Hartle has struggled. Power pitchers don't need defensive play as often to win. If you put the ball in play to right field at Wake, it could be a home run. No other park is like that in the country. They lose when the ball doesn't go over the fence easily and their players have to cover a lot of ground.

Looks like State will not face Chase Burns until Friday's game. Wake is going with Falco (RHP, 5.45 ERA, giving up 7 HRs, 33 Hits, and 21 runs in 33 innings pitched) tonight and saving Burns and Hartle for Friday and Saturday. I am a little surprised, since I thought they would want to keep Burns in the first slot and give him as much time to rest before the tourney next week. I really like State's chances tonight in this game and hopefully a win will give them some positive momentum for the rest of the weekend. I do think a series win wraps up a regional hosting spot.

As far as the weather goes, tomorrow night is not looking great (scattered storms predicted after 6pm) and Saturday looks bad early morning and late in the day. After 3pm on Saturday it looks like storms are likely starting late afternoon and into the evening. I wonder if State moves the Saturday game up to a noon start to try and get the game in or moves it to Friday for a double-header.

Chase Nixon has 5 strikeouts in his last 12 ACC games. I get that they want to try to work Sosa in, but I still struggle with that one. Maybe I'm hyper-fixated on his K rate. I dont know. I love that identity from the bottom of the order

My thought is that Chase is basically our only substitute for the outfield at this point, so putting him at DH could hamstring you in the instance you needed him in the field. I dunno. I too love his plate discipline, but his ceiling is pretty low from an extra base hit perspective, and Sosa has flashed power. Hopefully it works out.
