The No. 19 NC State baseball team dropped just its second one-run ballgame of the season in a 7-6 defeat at Louisville on Saturday afternoon at Jim Patterson Stadium.
Louisville (19-11, 5-6 ACC) clinched the series as Cardinals' closer Tucker Biven recorded the final three outs. NC State (18-10, 8-6 ACC) and Louisville scored all 13 combined runs in Saturday's game in the first four innings.
NC State reliever
Shane Van Dam tossed five scoreless frames to keep the Wolfpack within one, setting a new career high with five innings pitched. Van Dam allowed just two hits and one walk with a strikeout in his stellar outing out of the bullpen.
The combined Louisville bullpen effort from Kayden Campbell, Jared Lessman, Ty Starke and Biven allowed just two runs (both unearned) as the Cardinals held NC State scoreless over the final five innings. Lessman (1-1) earned the win after tossing three scoreless innings with a pair of strikeouts.
Faced with a 5-1 deficit entering the fourth, NC State plated five runs in the top of the fourth inning to flip its four-run deficit into a one-run lead at 6-5.
Jacob Cozart opened the inning with a walk before
Eli Serrano III reached on a dropped fly ball in left field to put runners on second and third with nobody out.
Josh Hogue then ripped a 2-1 pitch down the right-field line to cut the Wolfpack's deficit to 5-3. Hogue's two-RBI double preceded a single from
Chase Nixon and walk from
Alex Sosa to load the bases with nobody out.
Brandon Butterworth's RBI fielder's choice cut Louisville's lead to 5-4 before
Garrett Pennington ripped a go-ahead, two-RBI double down the left-field line with two outs to give the Wolfpack a 6-5 lead.
The Cardinals scored two in the bottom of the fourth to retake the lead at 7-6. RBI efforts from Dylan Hoy and Eddie King Jr. helped push the home team back in front.
Louisville struck first in Saturday's matchup, taking a 3-0 lead in the bottom of the second. The Cardinals only recorded two hits in the three-run frame, bringing home their first run of the inning on a fielder's choice and its final run of the frame on an RBI groundout.
NC State responded with a run in the third to trim its deficit to 3-1. Pennington's hard ground ball to shortstop served as an RBI fielder's choice.
The Cardinals re-established their three-run lead when King Jr. scored via a wild pitch in the bottom of the third. Isaac Humphrey's RBI double then stretched the Cardinals' lead to their largest margin of the afternoon at 5-1.

For the first time since Feb. 22, 2023, at Coastal Carolina, NC State's defense turned three double plays. Offensively,
Chase Nixon paced the Wolfpack with a two-hit performance, while Pennington led the Pack with three RBI.
