Avent said they are going to play 14 or 16 innings. The 16 innings would be a 9 and 7 inning contest which apparently the ACC is considering adopting.

NC State Wins Game One 10-3; Game Two 5-1
DURHAM, N.C. The NC State baseball team swept Duke in a pair of fall games at Durham Bulls Athletic Park. The Wolfpack recorded a 10-3 win in game one before completing the Friday night sweep with a 5-1 victory in game two.

Game One | NC State 10, Duke 3 (Nine Innings)
After Duke's Tyler Albright smacked a solo shot in the bottom of the second, NC State responded with four runs in the top of the third to take a 4-1 lead. The Wolfpack opened the top of the third with walks from Luke Nixon and Noah Soles before Josh Hogue slugged a ground-rule double to center field to tie the score at 1-1.

With two outs in the third, Garrett Pennington crushed a three-run homer to center to put NC State ahead 4-1. Pennington's homer plated Soles and Hogue to give NC State a lead it never relinquished.

Duke trimmed NC State's lead to 4-2 in the bottom of the third before Pennington helped spark another four-run sixth frame for the Wolfpack. Pennington opened the inning with a double before later coming home on an Alec Makarewicz sacrifice fly. A wild pitch and a fielding error from the Blue Devils helped extend the Pack's advantage to 8-2.

Makarewicz knocked in another run in the seventh inning with a two-out RBI single, extending NC State's lead to 9-2. Brandon Butterworth tacked on the Wolfpack's 10th and final run of game one with a sacrifice fly in the eighth.

The Wolfpack pitching staff of Shane Van Dam, Ryan Marohn, Derrick Smith, Cooper Consiglio, Jake Bechtel, Camden Wimbish and Hollis Fanning limited the Duke offense to just three runs on four hits, combining to strike out 11 batters.

Game Two | NC State 5, Duke 1 (Seven Innings)
Garrett Pennington and Alec Makarewicz carried their game one production over to game two, putting NC State ahead 4-0 in the top of the first with a pair of two-RBI doubles. Pennington lined a double off the Blue Monster in left-center, plating Matt Heavner and Alex Sosa to make it 2-0 Wolfpack.

Makarewicz then doubled to center field to double the Pack's lead to 4-0. Pennington and Drew Lanphere scored on Makarewicz's extra-base hit as the Wolfpack drew three walks in the first inning.

Sam Yelton's solo home run trimmed NC State's lead to 4-1 in the second inning.

With Duke threatening in the bottom of the fifth, NC State turned the night's first double play with a 4-6-3 ground-ball double play involving Carson Falsken, Peyton Young and Brandon Crabtree. Jacob Dudan then struck out Noah Murray looking to strand a runner at third and end the inning.

Robert Nedry opened the seventh inning with an opposite-field double off the Blue Monster, advancing to third base on Matt Heavner's single to right field. Josh Hogue extended NC State's lead to its final margin at 5-1 with a sacrifice fly to left field.

Jacob Halford finished the game with a three-up, three-down frame to complete the Pack's sweep of the Blue Devils.

Jaxon Lucas, Chance Mako, Win Scott and P.J. Labriola also pitched in game two on Friday night as the Wolfpack pitching staff limited Duke to just four total runs over 16 combined innings.

NC State baseball notched two high fashion wins over the Duke Blue Devils in a fall exhibition at Durham Bulls Athletic Park on Friday, Oct. 13. The first game was nine innings long and ended in a 10-3 Wolfpack victory while the second game was only seven innings and ended in a 5-1 win for the Pack.

"I think it's great for two conference teams that are this close together to come out here," said head coach Elliott Avent. "It gives you things that you need to work on and it gets some players out there."

The Pack9 squad entered the contest with exactly half of the team being fresh faces to the program, including six transfer athletes and 14 true freshmen. Despite the roster turnover, the team demonstrated good chemistry and meshed well together on the field.

"I went to the Phillies game last night and to see the Phillies, with how they were so connected as a team and were able to beat a great Atlanta ball club," Avent said. "It doesn't matter what level you play chemistry and players pulling together is a big deal in the sport of baseball."

While the roster has plenty of new faces, Avent remains the one constant in Raleigh. He is entering his 28th season as the Pack's head coach and continues to build onto his already impressive Wolfpack tenure as the winningest coach in program history.

"He's a good guy, he's got a lot of experience," said graduate third baseman Alec Makarewicz. "I love hearing his wisdom every day and he's got a lot of good lessons to learn from."

NC State was able to capitalize on lead-off doubles in both games. The Wolfpack collectively hit three lead-off doubles and scored the runner each time before the third out. The Wolfpack hit six doubles in between both matchups and graduate first baseman Garrett Pennington accounted for two of those doubles with one being a two-RBI double to start the scoring in game two. In addition to his excellent play on the field, Pennington has also taken up the role as a team leader.

"Not only can [Pennington] play he's a good baseball player but what he's done is he's given us good leadership… He's been around college baseball and he's big on chemistry and bringing the team together."

Throughout the evening the Pack9 prioritized getting its young guys opportunities to face an opposing team. Throughout both games seven true freshman pitchers took the mound. These true freshmen combined to face a total of 33 batters in both games and only gave up five hits while punching out six batters.

"We got a lot of young pitching that not only seemed pretty good, but they seemed very poised for such a young age, " Avent said. "They're the most poised pitchers I remember in a long time since Carlos Rodon, maybe Jake Buchanon and Mike Rogers."

The Pack9 defense looked to have already made improvements from last year. Friday night's defensive highlights included diving catches by sophomore right fielder Andrew Shaffner and sophomore left fielder Josh Hogue. The infield looked smooth with junior shortstop Brandon Butterworth leading the group, going six for six on defensive opportunities in the opening game.

"Brandon Butterworth, a transfer, was outstanding tonight defensively… Hogue, a new transfer coming in, had a pretty good night," Avent said. "It's just fun watching these guys play and come together."

During the double-header, the red-and-white remained focused throughout all 16 innings. In both games the Pack was firmly in control and played complimentary baseball a good sign for the upcoming 2024 season.

The Pack9 will return to the field in February, hoping to build off of an NCAA tournament appearance last spring.

What happened at the end of our 6th inning? Batter (Sosa?) hit a ball in front of the plate that the catcher fielded and threw wide to first. Two runs scored and then everyone walked off the field. I didn't hear the announcer if he said anything. Was it runner interference going down the first base line?

The scoreboard was being operated by a UNC math student, so it was confusing if either of those runs counted or not.
