I hope it's a great day for Walker Jenkins and his family. He's a great kid and a great family.

The Twins get a slugging outfielder with the fifth overall pick.

Walker Jenkins will wear a Minnesota uniform.

He projects as a middle-of-the-lineup kind of guy who can add some pop and hit for average.

I've explained in several posts. It's the development mainly but guys like Teddy McGraw and Hartle were dudes coming out of HS. Of course McGraw has had two arms issues since HS but when healthy he's legit.

Hartle was the only one that was highly thought off out of HS and by highly thought of I mean ranked highly.

They are doing the lord's work with that damn pitching lab.

Has anyone said, good but not great arms and a pitching lab?
I asked a ref if he could give me a technical foul for thinking bad things about him. He said, of course not. I said, well, I think you stink. And he gave me a technical. You can't trust em.

Man, ESPN is taking some creative license with Rhett Lowder. He was throwing harder than 85 coming out of HS. lol He was 88-90 coming out of HS. ESPN man, smh.

I think you guys are taking some extreme license with this stuff

If a couple guys at freaking Wake Forest could consistently turn random 90mph righties into Top 10 picks with a Driveline copy after a couple years of development there would be multiple MLB teams that would pay them millions to do it for their organization instead

Also, can't espn find anyone better than kiley mcdaniel to trot out there for these broadcasts? He's the worst and he's been the worst since he was fartin' around on 247/Scout.

Multiple MLB teams have tried to poach Dr Nicholson from them and multiple MLB teams have consulted with Wake.

Nice try tho.

lol

Yep, you nailed it. Wake just built a garage and uses their iphone cameras to record their pitchers, kickers, and golfers all while not using a biomechanist and other phd's to study the mechanics, etc of the athletes.

You totally nailed it. The just got lucky. Super lucky.

Plus a pressure sensitive pitching mound. They can also break the film down to computer models to perform detailed biomechanical analysis. Add to this a PhD in biomechanics to analyze the data and suggest changes to the pitching coach and pitchers. This is why I have repeatedly said you have to not only build the lab, you have to hire staff to provide the analysis. Add to this Wake working to creatively develop a staff of students to provide detailed data analysis for not only the pitchers, but for the entire team. The grad student who was responsible for baseball analytics was recently hired by a professional sports team to be their data analyst.

11 of the first 17 picks so far have been college players. Last year it was 10, only 8 in 2021.

So far unc, florida state and clemson have had recruits drafted that will never see their campuses.

Also, 16 out of the 25 selections to this point are college players.

I love just about any draft but tomorrow and Tuesday are the real fun days.

Does State have anything like that for the pitchers? Or is that supposed to be one of the enhancements? I remember a couple summers ago Willadsen went to a lab maybe in New Jersey. Saw a twitter video and the place looked impressive.

Currently we do not but we are supposed to be building one (soon?). Alex Gee posted some info about it, I believe.

Willadsen went to driveline out in the Seattle area.

Yep. MLB is putting more and more of the risk on the college game and schools/coaches and let them develop the guys for 3 years instead of them spending 4-5 years on A and AA. Makes a lot of sense, seems to have been trending that way for a few years

It's one of two like it in the US I think (others may have been built or are in process of being built. Have this one on the east coast and Driveline out in Washington state is the "original"

It really started to pickup in 2019/2020 when about 40 minor league teams were eliminated and minor league salaries were increased. Much easier to let the HS players go to college and not have to pay them and MLB can just draft them in 2-4 years as a more finished product.

But to your point, it's been trending that way slowly for a bit. I did some research on it a while back but can't remember what year you really started to see it. Hell, probably 2020 but I can't remember, I'm gettin old.

I read something a few years ago (NY Times maybe?) that said Vandy was one of 4 schools with a pitching lab. Wake makes 5 but this article was written several years ago so the number is probably higher than 5 at this point. I know Stanford is or has opened one of their own. University of Nebraska-Omaha has one as well.
