We haven't had strong pitching consistently under Avent. Rodon era and 2021. That's pretty much it. It's really never been a strength. Of course our last pitching coach won a natty 2 years ago lol
Mother's Day weekend and the neighborhood pool opening picked the perfect weekend causing me to miss most of the last two games. Eww.

I love you Cle put you're off your rocker on this one. Brett Black, Clay Eason, Kurt Blackmon, Chris Combs, Bubba Scarce during the early Avent years.

Michael Rogers, Vern Sterry, Joey Devine and a few other quality arms on those '03 and '04 teams.

Andrew Brackman, Gib Hobson, Jason Duncan, etc

Eric Surkamp, Eryk McConnell, Sam Walls, James Gillheeny, Alex Sogard, Joey Cutler

Jake Buchanan, Cory Mazzoni, Grant Sasser, Rob Chamra

You already mentioned Carlos, but there was also John Easley, Ryan Wilkins, Andrew Woeck, Chris Overman

Brian Brown, Joe O'Donnell, Will Gilbert

Nick Swiney, Villaman, Evan Justice, Sam Highfill

Nick Swiney was about to have a season for the record books in 2020 if not for stupid covid. Kid was unhittable.

Not sure how old you are but your memory isn't very good if you have any age to ya.

Foxhall just got fired from Miss State a couple weeks ago.

Swiney was amazing. Forgot about him. Hell, I had forgotten about a lot of names on this list.
Couple of my favs that don't get enough credit - Will Gilbert, O donnel, Brian brown was a beast.

Lot of good/great names on this list, but not much to show for it as I'm assuming most of these names were spread out over various teams.

Good on Miss State for pushing the envelope and not settling.

Move those goalposts ha

You said we didn't have strong pitching, I provided names that refuted that statement. Those names won a lot of ball games. I mean sht dude, Rogers and Sterry won 11 games the same year, IIRC. Joey Devine was almost unhittable as a FR closer in '03. Those three were FILTHY.

Of course they were spread out over various teams, that's how time works. haha

Lemonis is just trying to save his own ass by getting rid of Scott. But sure, let's call it "pushing the envelope". haha
I'm not moving any goalposts. I'm not arguing anything. I'm just saying that we very rarely have consistent pitching/depth in order to compete for ACC title/supers and when we do we've done pretty well, but those instances are few and far between. You'd think in 25 years we've had lucked into one ACC title.
Pretzel logic as usual and a bit incorrect. But of course, yes, you'd think when you make the ACC championship game every 3.8 years odds are we'd win one. But guess what, if we're making the ACC title game essentially every 4 years that means we have in fact had the pitching to compete for ACC titles b/c Avent has done it 7 times over his tenure. We all wish he'd win one, like, no sht dude. haha

You really think we don't compete for ACC titles? I'll spell it out

Since 1997 when Elliott took over we've played in 7 title games as mentioned above. Only one other school has made more appearances in the ACC title game than us over that time period and that's FSU with legend Mike Martin Sr. with 11.

ACC title game appearances since 1997
FSU - 11 (won 7, all with Mike Martin Sr)
Ga Tech - 7 (won 5 all with Danny Hall)
NC State - 7 (zero wins)
Clemson - 6 (2 wins all with Jack Leggett)
unc - 5 (4 wins. 3 with Fox and 1 with Forbes)
Wake - 4 (3 wins all with George Greer in 98,99 and 01. Probably gets another this year)
UVA - 4 (2 wins all with Brian O'Conner)
Miami - 2 (1 and that was with legend Jim Morris who also won a bunch at Ga Tech before the MIA gig)
duke - 1 (1 win)
Va Tech - 1 (zero wins)
Maryland - 1 (zero wins)
Louisville - 1 (zero wins)

Looks like we are competing like hell for ACC titles, gotta have pitching to do that.

Go ahead, move the goal posts again, make something else up. All good.

There's a lot of sht you can say about Avent but not competing for ACC titles b/c of pitching isn't one.

Ok. I'd like to actually be able to win one of these. Fair? Lol. Just replace the word "compete", with "win" in my original post.

This is all good and well, but we have 0 acc tournament title wins under Avent. 0. We can compete but can't finish. It's annoying and it sucks. Just give me 1, please.

Issue is, idk if just replacing Avent changes this. I just know we don't look to be on an upward trajectory right now.

Yes, quite fair. We'd all love to win one. I literally said that above.

BUT. you just moved the goalposts yet again by changing the criteria after you were proven to be incorrect.

Back to more recent issues, on another thread, someone said that Avent should rest everyone this weekend against Pitt so that they are as rested as possible to make the NCAAT by winning the ACCT. Dont we need to worry about actually making the ACCT, or are we in that for sure? I don't think we can get swept by Pitt and still make even the ACCT. Am I wrong?

If it ain't the pitching, and it ain't the hitting (avents teams almost always have strong offenses, I'll give him that) what is to blame for 26 years of no chips? I really don't know at this point.

The funny thing, and something I have considered doing but have never taken the time to try, would be comparing Avent's record and achievements versus every ACC school from the time their current head coach was hired.

EXAMPLE

Wake Forest: Tom Walter: Hired in 2010 (14 seasons)
Overall record at Wake Forest: 406-334-1
ACC Tournament Finals Appearances: 0
ACC Titles: 0
NCAA Tournament Appearances: 4 (will earn fifth in two weeks)
Super Regional Berths: 1
CWS Appearances: 0

NC State (since Walter was hired at Wake Forest in 2010)
Overall record: 510-278
ACC Tournament Finals Appearances: 4
ACC Titles: 0
NCAA Tournament Appearances: 10
Super Regional Berths: 3
CWS Appearances: 2

This would take some time to do with each of the 12 other ACC schools, and there will probably be some teams with better marks. It would be interesting to see where NC State under Avent stacks against all of the league competition. You could maybe add things like record versus the school and such.

I am not trying to change anyone's mind. I have opinions on NC State baseball and its leadership, which I think are well-known.

If you do itemize the situation with a breakdown like this and Avent's NC State teams are near the top, how do you justify making a change?

If I have time, and no one else does it by next weekend, maybe I will sit down and have a go at it.

Very long post but I got you Rob.

Compared to the other 13 coaches when they started at their current schools/when they joined the ACC, Avent ranks:
Overall record: Better than 9 out of 13 coaches
ACC record: Better than 8 out of 13 coaches
ACC Tournament Finals Appearances: Better than 12 out of 13 coaches
ACC Titles: Tied with 8 other coaches with 0 ACC titles. 4 current coaches + Monte Lee previously at Clemson have at least 1 ACC title
NCAA Tournament Appearances: Better than/tied with 8 out of 13 coaches
Super Regional Berths: Better than/tied with 9 out of 13 coaches
CWS Appearances: Better than/tied with 10 out of 13 coaches
CWS Titles: Tied with 12 other coaches with 0 CWS titles. O'Connor at UVA is the only current ACC coach with CWS title
Head to head record: Better than 10 out of 13 coaches

In my opinion the only coaches that have better resumes at their current schools than Avent are O'Connor at UVA, McDonnell at Louisville, and Hall at Georgia Tech, even though he hasn't made it to a Super Regional since 2006, hard to argue with 5 ACC titles in 7 appearances.

Also adding that the combination of Fox/Forbes at UNC has been better than Avent over the same time period but I am not ready yet to say Forbes by himself has been better than Avent. Then obviously Martin Sr had one of the best programs ever while he was at FSU but Jarrett has complete rebuild on his hands now.

NCAA Tournament Appearances: 10
Super Regional Berths: 3

Four things

1. Thank you for doing this. It's a considerable amount of work.

2. In fairness, if you do the Fox/Forbes combining thing, UNC is better than NC State since whenever Fox started. I know that sucks for Wolfpack fans to read, but honesty and being overly generous are key in this assessment.

Same for Virginia Tech's John Szefc in that you could actually add in his time at Maryland.

3. If there is anything worth adding, it would CWS appearances since 1997. NC State has two, which schools have more?

4. Finally, I'd love to copy and paste this onto a new thread, but I believe the man who did the work deserves that credit. If he is willing let's do it so we can continue this discussion. I think it's worthwhile.

Thanks Rob. Was reading these boards from last nights and a had a free morning so just did the research. Analysis like this is very interesting to me.

Yeah some of them were hard because obviously a few coaches were in their first seasons so can't solely judge off that. And like you said if you include Fox with Forbes that changes things a lot and then obviously FSU with Martin Sr were one of the best programs ever which was also a good majority of Avent's tenure but they've fallen off since he left.

Four things

I agree with you on #2. I think in fairness, it should be a comparison with Fox/Forbes. I also struggle with the FSU comparison, since they fired Junior after a couple of years and Jarrett came in and is trying to completely rebuild FSU's roster. I would leave them out of the comparison or include Martin Sr.'s record over the same period Avent has been at State.

Overall, this is an excellent piece of work and helps to provide context to the discussion.

The 1-0 loss to Duke a couple years ago in the Championship game still haunts me! We should have stomped them that day. It was our only shut out of the year. And a base running blunder late in the game was a killer. That was our best opportunity to get the monkey off our backs and we completely crapped the bed.

Yes those were definitely the two I struggled with setting a time period for. After these comments I think combining Fox/Forbes gives a better picture because Forbes was on the staff so long it was a pretty seamless transition. I am going to edit my original post to include Fox. Like you said Jarrett has a complete rebuild on his hands at FSU so I think that is a little different.

The last one to perhaps combine would be Miami with Jim Morris, who was out of the stratosphere with both the Canes and Georgia Tech -- although his time at Tech was before 1997.

Again, folks are entitled to think what they want and feel one way or another about Avent, but it is important to have a total context as to what he has done at NC State. When people label his tenure as 'mediocrity' that tells me a lot about the poster as opposed to the point they are trying to make.

Yes Miami was dominate under Morris for which Avent was here a majority of that time. At the same time DiMare is now in year 5 so I think it's fair to let him stand on his own. Despite winning 18 or more ACC games in every season (he could do it again this year if they take 2 out of 3 from Duke next weekend) he has yet to even make an ACC semifinal, final or make it out of 3 regionals (1 of which they hosted).

I am not trying to change anyone's mind. I have opinions on NC State baseball and its leadership, which I think are well-known.

If you do itemize the situation with a breakdown like this and Avent's NC State teams are near the top, how do you justify making a change?

If I have time, and no one else does it by next weekend, maybe I will sit down and have a go at it.

Then obviously Martin Sr had one of the best programs ever while he was at FSU but Jarrett has complete rebuild on his hands now.
big ups on you making this post. This should be stickied, lol.

Really puts things into perspective. FWIW, I like Avent, and I want him to be the guy for us, I just question if it's too late in is career for him to lead us in a competitive manner anymore. These last 2 seasons have been pretty brutal.

Like I said earlier, I have no idea where we go. I could make arguments for either side (retaining/retiring)

I just don't think you can make any big decisions about Avent solely based on this year and last year (assuming we do miss the tournament this year) when he's been in the ACC Championship game the 2 previous years, last year's NCAA was a complete snub (a majority of media predictions had us as a 2 seed and I don't think any of them had us missing completely) and the year before that you were in Omaha with a very good chance at winning the whole thing. You just need to make it in for something to happen. We were solidly in in 2021 but even the most positive of State fans I doubt had State in the CWS especially when the Super Regional matchup was at Arkansas.

I think there's certainly a conversation this year between Avent and Boo. But I don't think the "retiring" conversation happens until Avent is consistently missing the tournament (that's not a snub) 2-3 years in a row.

Avent head to head record vs Szefc: 6-3

Then obviously Martin Sr had one of the best programs ever while he was at FSU but Jarrett has complete rebuild on his hands now.
big ups on you making this post.

Look, I want you and all to understand two things. I would never deny anyone their right to post their feelings, even when I disagree. If you think he should go, that is your right. As long as you don't slag on others for disagreeing, I say amen to you.

Everyone pretty much knows that I think Avent should walk when he is ready. He has given most of his adult life to NC State, and not just in baseball. I have never met a man who loves the school more than him, and that is an intangible that I believe is extremely important. I think it has helped him recruit and win over the years despite the lack of support.

The second thing I will say (write) is this. Avent's coaching in the 2021 Super Regionals was as impeccable a performance from a head coach/manager as I have ever seen. He literally got every decision correct, including wisely punting on the first game in order to have all of his bullets for the next two games. Most coaches would have lost that series to the Razorbacks.

I highly doubt that Avent has lost any competitive zeal or baseball intellect from Arkansas to now. His players, which he is responsible for, have got to make plays. If they put the team in a position to win, I would trust Avent to lead them. Again, that is my opinion -- no better or worse than anyone else's.

This is fair. We're going to have to hit the transfer portal pretty hard after this year, though. Need a slew of upgrades

This would take some time to do with each of the 12 other ACC schools, and there will probably be some teams with better marks. It would be interesting to see where NC State under Avent stacks against all of the league competition. You could maybe add things like record versus the school and such.

Not an excuse, they beat our brains in Game 2/3, but the suspension thing turned out to be a huge nothingburger when it should have cost them Thursday night.

There wasn't a single UNC regular lineup guy that was suspended this weekend. That's sort of crazy .... the rule is clear as day: if you leave the dugout/bullpen it's automatic 1 game. The entire team and bullpen did this vs. G-W. Forbes said some guys missed Thursday but I dont see how. They threw every single top pen arm and had 100% regular lineup + top bench PH and PR.

Vandebrake threw his helmet and escalated the situation after the GW guy started it .... and I thought he would get like 3 games based on what has been handed out in the SEC and elsewhere this season. Of course he played the entire weekend and hit like .600 with a million RBIs.

I assume everyone in their lineup is sitting tomorrow vs. Costal. They somehow negotiated to have everyone play this weekend and sit out a meaningless mid week instead.

Then obviously Martin Sr had one of the best programs ever while he was at FSU but Jarrett has complete rebuild on his hands now.
big ups on you making this post.

Having know EA for the last 25 years I think he has earned that right. He has also earned the right to see the renovations at Doak completed.

That said, and I'm going against what I've said for years. Hart needs to go. He has made some stupid calls this year. Chrysler needs to go. He's not Foxhall bad but he's not far off. I miss Holiday like you have no idea.

We need some "experienced youth" to coach the players.

I will curse the day that Toad Turnip let Ray Tanner walk out the door.

If Hart leaves the recruiting momentum we have developed in this state leaves with him and you can forget the Florida connections too. Gone. Thank goodness he was around to pick it up once Fox pooped the bed with coaches around the state around 2009ish. We had a real problem recruiting this state around that time and in 2007 when Hart was promoted to full time coach. He turned it around.

I mean this as nicely as I can put it, but saying Chris Hart needs to leave is bat sht crazy insane.

What does "experienced youth" mean?

30 year old Brett Austin?
42/43 year old Chris Hart?
47 year old Bo Robinson?
47 year old Clint Chrysler?

Other than Elliott, this staff is young.
Other than Elliott and Hart (who played at FSU) every other coach on our staff played at least on the AAA level. Pretty experienced.

Look, Clint takes undue criticism IMO for his "coaching". I have issues with the recruiting but I also know our limitations in that area. If Elliott sends Clint packing after this season, I'm fine with it but we have some serious work to do to get the arms we need. Pitching. Lab. (and NIL)
