I don't think we've quit, I just think we suck. Other than Groover or Cozart there isn't one positional player who would've started for any of our teams from 2010-2020.

That's actually a very fair pair. I tend to believe this, as well. We're pretty void of talent

This team lost so many it should have won. Can't blame the NCAA selection committee this year. We just suck. Not sure how you have such a magical run at CWS and then regress this far only two seasons later. I think it might be time for Avent to retire and I hope he does. Time to see what Hart can do at the helm. Avent is clueless when comes to in game management

I hate piling on but Payton Green might be the most disappointing high level prospect we've ever had. A season full of game ruining mistakes. Not that he's the only problem but man has he been brutal in every facet of the game.

I am not going to tell folks how to feel in regard to coaches staying or going (I'll give my opinion if asked, but everyone is entitled to theirs), but this is so wrong. Avent is not clueless.

Between the end of 3rd and the top of the 4th, the umpires checked UNC starter Knapp for foreign substances on his glove and hat. UNC coach Forbes walked to the mound to complain and then smiled at the NCSU dugout as he returned to his dugout.

If it's true that Avent asked for it to be checked, that is bush league and absolutely humiliating.

We got fat and happy after that CWS run. Rested on our laurels. Not to mention letting Tommy white go couldn't have helped

For me, 2003 and 2021 are the two seasons Avent and NC State could have and maybe should have got. I think the fact that NC State in some of the other years actually upset teams to get to the final hurts them in a weird way because they now have this ridiculous losing streak in ACC championship games. For example, in 2015 NC State killed Virginia but lost the next day to FSU (Palmeiro bunting in the first inning) in Durham. UVa won the national title that season.

Either way, the record for the Wolfpack in ACC championship games after 1992 (no wins in eight tries) is one of the most astounding stats I have ever encountered in sports. It is like the Lakers versus the Celtics in the 1960s or the Brooklyn Dodgers in the World Series after WWII.

I don't have an answer to it. Statistically speaking, the law of averages would have given NC State at least one of them.

I strongly disagree with this. Avent gets bodied on these boards and on social media quite frequently. I am often the one who has to take (read) the brunt of the criticism of Avent, so I have some familiarity with it.

Maybe cause Avent has actually built a consistent top 25 program, made multiple ACC championship games, 2 CWS (1 a fifth place finish and the other a final four that could have easily been a national championship).

This year has been embarrassing but even last year was a regional team if not for an all time screw job.

What have Doeren or KK done that compares to Avent's resume?

This is a very cynical take, but we're going to spend $15MM basically for half a turf field, a players lounge and a couple of picnic tables in th outfield, and still be in the bottom third of the league as far as facilities. I'm hopeful we're holding something back for the new coach, whenever that time comes. Otherwise it's going to be a tough job to fill and expect any better results than we've gotten.

Agreed. Big time. NC state baseball is probably my favorite team on campus, and these last 2 hears have been pitiful. Aside from that 2021 sweep, UNC has absolutely owned us. I think the Preston palmiero team was the last to beat UNC in a series?

Has a lot to do with them actually caring about baseball though. Look at their stadium. Look at their facilities.
Stadium and facilities are material things. Measurable things if you will. This team lacks the unmeasurable things. Heart, determination, will to win and passion. Just my .02

We can't recruit with the big boys without those shiny toys.

I see nothing wrong with your take. That's our future, as it stands.
When Doak is completely renovated, who will NC State have better facilities than?

I can give two for sure, Duke and Notre Dame. The former won the 2021 ACC title. The latter had the best ACC regular season record in 2021 and reached the CWS in 2022.

Maybe Wake Forest too? They are absolutely loaded this season.

I would love to hear from folks here as to what other schools that they think will have a park worse than Doak. This is an honest question, especially for those who have traveled to see NC State play at some of those places.
After the renovations, Doak will still be above Duke and Notre Dame. I think all other stadiums are even or better. I have personally seen UVA, VaTech, Wake, UNC, FSU, Duke, Louisville, and Georgia Tech's stadiums.

You rate Wake as having a better stadium? Even after renovations?

Yes I would. Unless something has changed, I have not seen State planning to cover any portion the fan seating area. This is just one example. Wake has other stadium improvements planned, as do several other ACC schools.

Wake is working with the old Ernie Shore Field, which probably benefited from the taxpayers to some extent (or maybe not). I've often wondered what the big garage thing behind right field is for. Doak has a bigger concourse but doesn't really offer much more.

As I said in an earlier post, the Doak renovations does have some lipstick on a pig-look to it. I'd love to be wrong.
Mentioning Ernie Shore field, it is the first stadium where I saw a professional baseball game. I went with a friend for his birthday when I was 6 years old in 1966 to watch the W-S Red Sox play. Wake does benefit from playing in an old minor league stadium and they have made some significant upgrades, since purchasing it from the city for $5.5M. Since the purchase, they have spent another $20M on upgrades.

I just think NC State would be wise to raise 40-50m (however long it takes), burn Doak to the ground, and then rebuild a new, modern park from the ashes. I have no way of knowing, but my hunch is it would be easier to raise money for that type of project.

I agree with you. Doak has history, but from an expansion standpoint, it has limitations. The updates they are making now are nice, but they only bring State to parity with some schools. You use the expression "lipstick on a pig" and I think it is accurate.

Vision is something severely lacking out of Weisiger-Brown right now. We were supposed to have a master facility plan produced several years ago. Covid certainly delayed it, but where does it stand now? I haven't seen any annual report or "state of athletics" from Corrigan in well over a year. The last such report was a 8-10 page PDF with platitudes and no measurable goals or stated objectives. Feels like we are on autopilot and this is a school that really needs a communicative leader who can rally support, as fundraising and money doesn't just materialize in large amounts for us as it seems to for our competitors.

I'm hopeful we're holding something back for the new coach, whenever that time comes. Otherwise it's going to be a tough job to fill and expect any better results than we've gotten.

I don't know about y'all but I'm sick and tired of losing to UNC in baseball. Those pansy asses should not have a better program than NC State. It's a blue collar and analytical sport, which are two of our defining characteristics as a university.

Agreed.

I think that could be raised in no time if that was the vision.

Staff
One more at bat and it is a tough hill to climb at this point. Getting swept by UNC two years in a row is a tough pill to swallow.

Having watched State all year, I do not think they have the pitching to be a top team in the ACC. A UNC friend of mine texted me from the game last night and said he was amazed how bad State's pitchers looked. He was not rubbing it in, he was just telling me where he thought State was lacking.

To me, pitching is the biggest issue and it trumps the fielding struggles State has shown. I actually believe it amplifies the defensive breakdowns and makes them appear even worse. I do think they hit the ball well enough to win games and this is not their biggest issue.

Going into the offseason and next year, significantly upgrading the pitching staff has to be Avent's number one priority.

The bigger issue is we have mediocre pitching across the board, and then you pair it with a team that is absolutely terrible defensively. That's where your recipe for disaster comes in.

I wish Big John Miralia would have had more opportunities this year.
