I'd like to say the pressure of the situation got to several of our guys last night, but we have had these inexplicable breakdowns in fundamentals all season long. Really not sure why we haven't been able to put it all together, but man our backs are really against the wall tonight, and we burned through our new found closer for the weekend already- just not good. Hoping for the best tonight, but not sure how this team rallies after last night.

People seem to be misinterpreting questioning a few of Avents decisions as questioning Avent.
Baseball is a sport of strategy. Minor details even as small as where your defense is placed matters. It's ok to question his decision to not walk to set up a double play. It's ok to question whether Fritton stayed in too long. None of that is questioning Avent as a legit baseball manager. But, IMO, he (and his staff) made some questionable decisions last night.
That being said, there are definitely execution issues on the players part that had the plays been made, those decisions probably don't affect the game in the manner they did.

Fritton has started all year, he is capable of going long. He was around 60 pitches going into the last inning. He's been your guy, and was already burned for the weekend. If he had been pulled for Lawson, who has been shaky, or someone else, that decision would be questioned too.
If we had put the batter on to set up a double play, and brought the infield back to double play depth, it would have made the squeeze even easier to execute. They had already bunted with their second best hitter earlier in the game, I don't know why they would've gone away from bunting there to accommodate our desire to turn two. The guy got down a perfect bunt.
Neither of those things is a sure fired coaching error, and they aren't scratching the surface of all of the stuff people are complaining about. Every single decision made on every single game is the wrong one, and it's beyond tiresome. Coaches try stuff, they try to push buttons, they try to get the best out of their guys, they play statistics, they play hunches, it's parr of baseball. Sometimes it works, like it did for UNC last night, and sometimes it doesn't.

Never said it was a "sure fire coaching error". It was something I questioned. As someone who's been around baseball my entire life, I would've done it differently, which is why I posted saying I questioned the move(s).

Are we forgetting UNC's entire team might have to sit out a game due to leaving the bench for the G-W "fight"? Tonight's lineup and Saturday's lineup could be a partly skeleton crew. Plus, no arm they threw last night blew us away, which is pretty atypical for them not to have at least 1 nasty pen guy.
We have a massive starting pitching advantage next two games, time to take advantage and continue to hit.

UNC can hit the piss out of the ball. Given the status of our pen, we'll need at least 10 runs each game/our starters to practically pitch shutouts. Odds are massively against us but it's not over until it's over.

I don't think the odds are massively in one team or another's favor. The next two games between NC State and UNC are 50/50 in my mind. One team might badly beat the other, but that doesn't mean they were heavily favored. That just happens sometimes. NC State controls its own destiny. If they play with the focus they displayed in the last two games at South Bend, they will do well.

They will, but, like we've seen all year, those 2 games in Southbend are the exception, not the rule. I wish we could have taken a 5-0 lead yesterday and cruised tona game 1 win and set ourselves up favorably, but again, that's not how this team operates this year.

There has been plenty of blame placed on both players and coaches in the topics covering the baseball team. You have just chosen to not acknowledge them. I have been very critical of the mistakes made by both65Pack said:

Avent, Hart and numerous players. Avent isn't going anywhere so you might as well just avoid the baseball forum. He's going to be allowed to leave on his own terms.
Not a good sign early that this incredibly bad pitcher is dominating us. Still early, but yeah.

Well, this should clear up any question if we are making regionals this year. Great hitting club completely wasted by terrible defense and pitching. We've done nothing but regress since that college World Series appearance.
We need changes in this program. Big ones. I just don't know what. There are people here who are much more in tune with the program who may have suggestions, but this program is a shell of it's former self right now.packman34 said:

Even pre CWS, we didn't experience this groundhog day of the same issues year in and year out.
