Just make fairly routine defensive plays and this one isn't close. Same thing we've seen all year long.

What was the reasoning for finishing with Fritton for 4+ innings?

Could've walked that last batter to set up a double play opportunity.

Well i mean he should have run out to center and caught that ball for Nolan for starters

In that situation, you HAVE TO walk the bases loaded on purpose to setup a force play at the plate. That pretty much eliminates the squeeze as an option there. Avent, I swear, coaches ass backwards.

You're not turning a double play on that bunt. Come on, man

Same thing he didn't do last Thursday.
First base is open.
Walk him.
Set up a force out at any bag.
Set up a double play.
Result may still be the same but at least try.

Stop trotting Whittaker out there in the weekend rotation.

Burned Fritton and Nelson and still took the loss.

Can you imagine the utter **** posting on this forum of we had kept the bunt on with two strikes, and then bunted a squeeze play to try and win. It's great when it works. So many head coaches in this fan base.

No kidding. The bunt wins it either way. Having said that, unless you're a fortune teller you don't know the guy is going to bunt. You walk the batter to set up the double play with the winning run on third and less than 2 outs.

I've blamed plenty of losses on Avent this year. I don't think he coached a great game but this one's on Serrano.

Serrano and Parker Nolan had very big mistakes tonight

Serrano catching a pop up in foul territory, Nolan, who's the best outfielder defensively on the team, catching a semi routine fly ball and Chrysler for bringing Fritton in the 5TH INNING is what cost the game

Fritton is what saves the game from even being winnable at that point…

Players have to make plays.

Hindsight always 20/20. Why not walk the guy who hit a triple and then change pitchers?

I almost forgot pinch hitting a guy that hasn't had a hit in a month who gets a two strike triple. ****ing genius level coaching. And we're mad we didn't walk the bases loaded after that. Sure.

It's remarkable what Avent has been able to do for this program with such meager administrative support and a facility that is the bottom third of the conference. The man deserves our gratitude and nothing less.

Or…if God forbid Wilkerson doesn't get the bunt down and the runner on third is meat at home.

Difference is we've used fritton up for the weekend. Backs are against the wall in terms of bodies. We're absolutely screwed.

Just a train wreck.

I have no idea what happens to Avent after this season, but I won't cry if we inject some new blood into this program. We need something, badly.

I'm gonna preface this by saying I watched the game on a phone....And I'm gonna try and be as polite as I possibly can...

But that may have been the worst display of execution I have ever seen at that level of ball. A dropped fly ball on the infield that damn near hits the kid in the head. Multiple balls in the outfield that should have been caught that dropped in. Three catchable balls in the inning along that Whitaker got pulled. There's no excuse for stuff like that.

My phone died in the top of the ninth, we were up a run. I was driving back home not knowing the final score until my son texted me to tell me we had lost 9-8. I was peeved. I asked how we lost, and he said "on a suicide squeeze". I thought, well that makes it even worse since I just watched State execute one of the worst sacrifice bunt attempts in history in the top of the 9th before my phone died. If I were Avent, I would have went full Augie Garrido on the team in the clubhouse after the game. And if you don't know the Augie Garrido clip I'm talking about, then just Google it. Yea, that woulda been me.

Avent has to do something to get these kids to get things wired tight because they have entirely too many brain cramps to be successful.

I understand that coaches are responsible for their players and it is basically the coach's fault even when it is not his fault, but at some point the players have to make plays -- and not just super plays but also rudimentary, fundamental ones.

This is on the players. They did not mangle garden variety ground balls or pop ups in high school or travel ball. If they did, they would not be at NC State.

NC State, Avent, Hart, etc. asked them if they wanted to be Wolfpackers. They accepted the responsibility. This was their dream. Lock in and act like it matters, if for no other reason than as a sign of gratitude.

In a game with several (repeat, several) misplayed balls and failed execution, NC State would have beat UNC if they simply got one of those correct. The most consistent trait that connects us all is imperfection, so they will make mistakes, but they have room to grow with the needless mistakes that they make.

If I am Avent, I demand to see the Wolfpack that I saw the last two games at Notre Dame -- and then I ride them hard the rest of the way because this team has not earned the trust to let it be assumed that they can lock in on their own.

I agree. The fact that folks are discussing Avent after that game is borderline comical to me. Make a routine play. Execute a simple sacrifice bunt. Play with some urgency. That display tonight was embarrassing, and its all on the players IMO.

Kept holding out hope that this team was gonna put it all together and go on a run. Just doesn't seem like it's gonna happen for this team.
