As a refresher, here is the rule for college athletes as it regards gambling:
Quote:
"NCAA rules prohibit athletes, coaches and staff from betting on amateur, collegiate and professional sports in which the NCAA conducts a championship. For example, athletes cannot bet on NFL games even if state laws would legally allow them to if they weren't competing under NCAA rules."
Gambling probes eyeing dozens of Iowa, Iowa State athletes
I was aware of the rule, since my son is a former college student-athlete, but I am not sure how well this rule is understood by the general public. I suspect gambling on sports by student-athletes is going on at large number of universities and with the growth of legalized gambling across the country, I anticipate it will grow.
To echo you, Davie. This includes literally everything. We had multiple compliance meetings where it was pretty heavily emphasized, and this was way before Draft Kings, FanDuel, etc. were so accessible.
Can't win money in fantasy football, NCAA tournament brackets, Master's pools, etc. If there isn't some sort of update to the rules/bylaws there will be many more stories like this, I imagine. It wouldn't surprise me if this deal with Iowa is more along those lines given that they don't have evidence of match tampering.
