I saw the news hit this weekend regarding irregularities concerning Alabama baseball that lead Ohio and Massachusetts gaming commissions to suspend all betting on Alabama baseball games. I assumed something was going on inside the Bama program and today, this news broke. It will be interesting to see if any players were involved, but at this point, it appears the coach may have been the key figure.

Yep. People can read more about it here. I honestly believe these types of stories will continue. The key is the punishment and in my opinion, it should be severe. Players and coaches involved should face permanent bans from the sport, if they are found guilty.

With the proliferation of legalized gambling, and the ease at which bets can be placed, I won't be surprised to see more incidents. Pete Rose had to use a bookie, now you just need an app on your phone.

Yep, that was the real reason behind me even creating this post. Very treacherous waters we're entering now with the increased access to sports betting.

I share your concern. It is why I feel so strongly about any players or coaches who violate the rules with regards to gambling. Permanent bans from the sport are harsh and they should be. We will need significant punishments to hopefully serve as deterrents to those who are inclined to break the rules and manipulate the results of games.

As a refresher, here is the rule for college athletes as it regards gambling:
Quote:

"NCAA rules prohibit athletes, coaches and staff from betting on amateur, collegiate and professional sports in which the NCAA conducts a championship. For example, athletes cannot bet on NFL games even if state laws would legally allow them to if they weren't competing under NCAA rules."

Gambling probes eyeing dozens of Iowa, Iowa State athletes
I was aware of the rule, since my son is a former college student-athlete, but I am not sure how well this rule is understood by the general public. I suspect gambling on sports by student-athletes is going on at large number of universities and with the growth of legalized gambling across the country, I anticipate it will grow.

To echo you, Davie. This includes literally everything. We had multiple compliance meetings where it was pretty heavily emphasized, and this was way before Draft Kings, FanDuel, etc. were so accessible.

Can't win money in fantasy football, NCAA tournament brackets, Master's pools, etc. If there isn't some sort of update to the rules/bylaws there will be many more stories like this, I imagine. It wouldn't surprise me if this deal with Iowa is more along those lines given that they don't have evidence of match tampering.

Indiana man center of gambling probes involving Alabama, Cincinnati baseball, AP sources say

An Indiana man whose son is a member of the University of Cincinnati baseball team is the bettor at the center of separate investigations that led to firings of Alabama coach Brad Bohannon and two members of Bearcats baseball staff this month, two people familiar with the inquiries told The Associated Press on Friday.

Earlier this week, Cincinnati announced assistant coach Kyle Sprague and director of operations Andy Nagel were relieved of their duties May 17, about a week after the school opened an investigation into possible NCAA violations.
