I was about to say, oh look, the black is a strike again. Chase Nixon just took what was ball 4 last game to Wilken. In game 2 it's now a strike. haha

And Matt is now getting squeezed already. Can't make it up.

Playing these teams at their places is really really tough. You gotta place flawless defense and throw strikes and even then when you're throwing strikes they have to call them.

I think when healthy, Wake could make a run in the NCAA tournament. They've got the arms and play good defense. Their hitting numbers are a tad inflated by playing home games in that cracker jack ball park but they can swing it too. These guys are legit, IMO.

They definitely can. Their rotation will give them a shot in any regional or super.

Tough to win at places like Wake and ECU (top 10-15 teams) when they're getting the home cooking behind the plate like we're seeing today. That MFer let 5'5 Tommy Hawke scare him into not calling strikes the rest of the inning. Awful. haha

Come on man. We can't just blame the refs. We have failed to execute in situations like this all year. I think we just are who we are. Average.
The "refs"?

Tells me all I need to know about your baseball knowledge.

The team's issues hasn't been because of Highfill, he's done what he's supposed to do. Dudes behind him (like P Green) have let him down over and over.

You know exactly what I meant. Hell, when do we just have to accept that this team is destined to be .500? So many keep trying to hold on hope that things will just magically change. These things just keep happening.
Ya know, I had this nice long post ready to fire off and decided against it. No use.

You'll never change no matter how many times you've been proven wrong, especially with your Highfill nonsense.

No one thinks anything will "magically change". But you can keep conjuring up these cute narratives if you need to. There's plenty of us here that see the actual problems and issues with this team.

My issue with the highfill defenders is that nothing seems to ever be his fault. He "couldn't be hit today" yet he loaded the bases with 1 out. I love the kid and am forever thankful for what he did for us in Omaha. I don't think that version of highfill exists anymore. Yeah, issues with this team are pretty obvious:

Defense at ss: not sure if this is fixable. No idea who they'd put there and where they'd put green.

Bullpen: not fixable. The talent isn't on the roster. This is something we'll have to dodge all year.

Bad luck: you'd think it will even out.... But it's out of our control.

You can sit here and say that I'm wrong about the team, wrong about highfill, etc, but so far the improvements just haven't happened. We keep doing the exact same things and just hoping it works out. I don't think that's a good recipe

You are just confused. Sorry buddy.

Have you looked at our schedule? We have a single loss outside the top 19 in RPI and that was to Louisville who is 33 and we won that series. Nothing about that screams we are destined to be .500

.500 in the acc.

As CLT posted UNC hosted with a .500 ACC record. Gotta look deeper but I understand that's hard for some people

I think it's a bit wild to be talking about us hosting a regional right now. Just my opinion though. A win against wake would do us a lot of good, though.

Holy sht bro, all I've been doing is offering you hard data on how you're out to lunch with your wild hot takes specifically about Sam Highfill. Reading comprehension must be tough for you when I literally spelled out the same issues as you above regarding issues at SS and the bullpen (not related to Highfill). Yet you somehow keep crying that I'm telling you you're wrong about the team.

At this point, I'm just going to clown your inability to understand what's been laid out in front of you. You truly are conflicted. Your urge to be mad is clouding common sense.

If we're destined to be .500 in the ACC as you say that means we go 10-6 the rest of the way so at worst we win 3 out of our last 5 series. UNC showed last year you can host at .500 in the ACC so not sure why that's wild

Holy sht this "ref" is bad. First pitch to Trice was called "ball". Same placement was strike 3 to Cozart and then the next pitch was in the same spot and was called a strike. This dude's zone has zero consistency. So tough.

Anything close with 2 strikes when we're hitting is a strike but this clown wouldn't punch out a Wake batter if the ball was right down the plate.

When Sam Highfill is visibly frustrated you know it's bad.

This guy didn't even start out consistent like the last guy, he's just been plain awful.

No, you haven't. Nothing you've offered me is "hard data", especially your highfill defense. "A bunt single and then he got sqeezed" is not hard data. It's literally blaming the umps for highfills troubles. I'm pretty sure you've been using these excuses since the BC series. Like I said, LOVE highfill, but to sit here and continually defend him being subpar despite him blowing game after game isn't going to get us many wins. Unfortunately, i'm not sure how many more optiosn Avent actually has.

You literally mentioned nothing about anyone else in the pen aside from highfill to me.

You literally never mentioned anything about a fix at SS to me.

I don't think i'm the one who is wrong about the team here. The team continues to break down in big moments, blow games, etc. If you were right, I think we'd see a different outcome.

If you've mentioned these other things to others (bullpen, SS) forgive me, as I haven't scoured this entire thread to read all of it.

Sorry folks, this dude has gone and done it...

I posted this literally to you last week.
I'll take this chronologically...
Against BC, he did hit the first guy up in the 6th but got the next guy to pop up to CF BUUUUUUUT Nolan got lazy and somehow didn't make a play on the ball. So instead of one out with a dude on first there's runners on 2nd and 3rd and no outs. Sam strikes out the next dude and then jams the guy after that with a pop up to LF and Trice doesn't really make an attempt on the that ball either. Maybe he played it right but the video doesn't really look good. So, again, Sam makes the pitch he needs to get the 2nd out and only give up at most one run but his defense does him zero favors. Nolan and Trice play defense that inning should've been over fairly quickly. The first hard hit ball of the inning was the HR to Wang on a fastball up and in a hair. Sam was ahead in the count 1-2 which sucks. The very next pitch after the Wang bomb was a base hit and then he gets pulled. Not sure how anyone thinks Sam should've been pulled any sooner when BC wasn't hitting him very well. Once they did he gets yanked which IMO was the appropriate time.

I don't necessarily disagree about last night but it was Friday, game 1 of the series so you want to try and limit the arms to save the bullpen for the rest of the weekend, if you can. Especially when Willadsen and Fritton aren't going to eat up innings Saturday and Sunday. Willadsen has thrown more than 6 innings just once all year, going 7 against UVA (on 118 pitches). Fritton hasn't thrown past the 6th inning in league play. He did go 5 and two thirds against UVA but didn't make it a full 6. Knowing that, you gotta let Sam work it out, if possible. He didn't and Miralia goes in against a lefty/lefty situation. If you notice, Rio was warming up earlier in the inning but when Louisville pinch hit a righty for the lefty DH, they kept Sam in. Once they eventually put 4 runs on the board that inning we pivoted to Miralia to save Rio (IMO). Thankfully John did his job and then some to set up the comeback. They kept him out there in the 9th b/c there were 2 lefties coming up as well.

Sam doesn't have it? Dude was lights out against UVA (5.2 innings total , no hits, no runs and 3 K's), the best hitting team in the conference and a top two hitting team in the country. He was damn good against Miami the weekend before that, another really good team. He's coming back from an injury and many of us have said it can be an up and down experience managing it. IMO, him throwing in 50 degree weather up in Boston and pouring down rain Friday night wasn't the most comfortable situations for him. I know the hot takes are fun but...

Your response: "Good response. I agree that we will need Highfill if we want to make noise like we know we can this year. Reading your breakdown, maybe it was flukier than it seemed, and I'd like to see Highfill go out there and get a shutdown inning just for his own confidence soon. We're gonna need him this season"
He literally got you 2.1 shutdown innings today.

Here's another: "Rob they are average SS play and 2 arms away from being in that category. Maybe even one arm.

We really really need to rethink our pitching recruiting. Wake threw 3 pitchers at us today and all 3 throw in the mid-90s. Wake freakin Forest. 2 of those 3 are from NC too.

How many dudes we got that can throw strikes in the mid-90s? None."

If you've mentioned these other things to others (bullpen, SS) forgive me, as I haven't scoured this entire thread to read all of it.
Here's another: Accurate. Rio Britton all of a sudden can't throw strikes and Justin Lawson seems to have reverted back to his JUCO control at times as well.

Maybe you should actually read the posts in the thread before going guns blazing about some bullsht narrative you think posters on here supposedly have.

You have no rebuttal. It's ok to say that, lol. Everything I said is true.

You literally mentioned nothing about anyone else in the pen aside from highfill to me.
Here's one: "The team's issues hasn't been because of Highfill, he's done what he's supposed to do. Dudes behind him (like P Green) have let him down over and over."

Here's one: "The team's issues hasn't been because of Highfill, he's done what he's supposed to do. Dudes behind him (like P Green) have let him down over and over."

Hang on, is this supposed to be "hard data" ?? lol. My man, you said nothing here. I agree with everything you said, but you pretty much said what I said, but got mad at me for saying it, lol. Maybe walk this one back a little bit. The only ones guns a blazing is you. I just shared my opinion, you're the one who seemingly has an issue with everything shared on this board that you don't agree 100% with.

Going into today's games they did. I am not the smartest guy, but I know .954 in 72 attempts is better than .940 in 57 attempts.

Fritton's 1-2 was an absolute strikeout pitch, glad he got him to pop up next pitch.

Going to the 6th tied 3-3.

All this handwringing and we are battling the #2 team in the country at their place in a doubleheader.
