labriola isn't an ACC pitcher. he was worth a risk (i guess) but he shouldn't get meaningful innings going forward

As much as it pains me to say, ezu ballpark and fans show out well on tv. Also great to hear our fans who travelled there to put up with their s h i t.

It is painful. Especially knowing we really have no space to expand our 2200 seat stadium.

I refuse to believe Creed Watkins can't give us more than what we are getting from some of these pitchers.

I can take a competitive loss there, without even batting an eye. But giving up 13 runs in 8 innings is pretty yuck. Hope to get them back here in a few weeks.

Not a game loss that will kill us. We get a chance at redemption in a few weeks. WF is bigger. Would be nice to take 2 from them.

Went to the game last night. ECU has a nice ballpark. Unfortunately the defensive issues from last season were not remedied, and it cost us that game. Also cost us the BC series. Trice really shouldn't be playing the field, and Green is broken mentally for some reason. Idk what you do here if you're avent. Hopefully they look better against Wake, but this bullpen is a steaming pile of crap lol. Our starters are going to have to go 6+

CLT- I think Payton is a RFer. I would like to hear your thoughts on that. He runs well and has a better than average arm. Good enough for the big arm position in baseball, the RFer. His attempt last night on the popup in the left field corner that was foul was very good. In fact, I thought he may have caught it if Trice hadn't come in late and bothered him. Trice maybe should have caught it but he plays OF like an IF just learning. Maybe he and Green could change roles? Trice to 2B, Harrison to short. That leaves Falsken for defensive backup and Heavner after that. It also gives us Soles, Nixon, Marcy, Piloli and Peebles to pinch hit or DH.

Marcy could play 1b a little if we want to try Serrano on the mound more, too.

The outfield of Nolan, Candeleria and Green would be pretty strong. Then Payton could work on getting back to hitting the ball where it's pitched, namely to RF on off-speed pitches and fastballs away. Trice may feel more comfortable, too. Could be good changes all around.

SS is a weakness for us now. Everyone has a better fielder than Green.

I'm willing to bet Green has his heart on playing SS but could probably be talked into playing 3rd although I think you're probably right and ultimately his body type is a future OFer. Most importantly (IMO) Payton needs to get stronger mentally. Right now every time he boots one or misjudges a flyball you can see him getting down on himself. Kid is thinking too much out there. Avent lit into them (him) right after last night and then Clint gave them all the business too and rightfully so, IMO. The defense is stressing Clint out and I see it every time he has to go out there after we boot away a 3rd out and then his pitcher falls apart. I'd love to be out at practice this week to hear about it all. haha

You could be right though, do we need to shake up the defense a lil?

100% agree with all this and especially the mental part. A lot of us played SS for a while and had to move when they reached a high level. Coaches would love to have multiple SS's, play the best one at SS and move the rest. It makes a strong defense. I have known a lot of kids that grew up SS and had their heart set on playing SS. I coached a couple. One played RF at UNC, a second one pitched and was a defensive replacement in CF at A&T. It happens, usually for the better for the player. Moving to the outfield would take away a lot of the mental part of the game for Green. A lot less thinking in the outfield. It may improve him all the way around. It is really not fair to our pitchers to make them work that hard. Lots of balls scored base hits should be played. ERA's are overinflated.

As for Green, I think it affects him at the plate, too. A move may improve him and us in more ways than one. I am a big advocate of a strong defense. SS is the most important part of that to me. They have to do more physically than anyone and have to know everything for everybody....if you are going to be good.

I also agree, a change in defense would be good. At least, I don't think it would hurt to try.
