Can someone explain what Nolan and Trice were doing on those soft fly balls that changed the series -- Game 3, bottom 6? Were they playing just way too deep and made bad reads?

They made the smart play to let the balls drop and keep them in front of them, the balls just took really weird hops because they were hit off the end of the bat. Nolan bobbled the hop when he finally got to it, but personally didn't think they played it wrong necessarily, you aren't supposed to try to make a diving catch in those situations. I'm sure someone else will disagree.

Memories are very short around here, because some of y'all don't remember the start we had two years ago. I'm not saying history will repeat itself, but the season isn't over. Every now and then I forget how much I hate this board.

My issue was how "nonchalant" (for lack of a better word) they looked on playing the balls. Nolan didn't even need to lay out, he pulled up just short of the ball. Trice didn't even get a jump on the ball at all. In fairness to Carter, he looked to be playing pretty deep. BCs field is strange (all turf or whatever it's called?) so maybe they played it right, just looked odd. Those balls bounced up pretty damn high. haha

this season is beginning to feel like the end of the Avent era. This team's going nowhere, all the new transfer rules have to be driving him bat **** crazy (and, frankly, he doesn't know how to do it very well, judging by the numerous deficits in multiple areas on this year's team two years removed from CWS). Why would he stick around?
We might need fresh blood in this program anyway. Perhaps its for the best

You don't think we've brought in a lot of very good transfers? Cause boy there's a long list of very good players that we've brought in from other programs over the last several years. Jason Parker, Evan Edwards, Johnny Butler, Josh Hood, Gino Groover just off the top of my head, I'm sure there's others. Even the guys on this years team like Nolan, Harrison, Candaleria, Trice, they've produced. So far there seems to be some misses on pitchers that we brought in, but some of them were pretty coveted guys, you just never know how that's going to play out. I've got issues with roster composition over the years, but I've always thought that transfers were a strength of this staff.

I thought Nolan lacked effort, too. Especially after Avent met him outside the dugout for not hustling when he tagged up from third on the deep fly to center that there was a throw to second to try to get a tagging runner there. He has to beat the throw and tag to second, else the run wouldn't have counted. Then this. He has to hustle and give full effort every play. It didn't appear he did there to me. It takes zero talent to hustle. If I had been the pitcher, I would not have liked his effort. Trice, well, like you, I couldn't tell as easily why he played it like he did but I thought both balls were catchable with effort. Let's say, I think better outfielders catch both balls. If I were Avent, I would be talking about our lack of appeared effort at a lot of positions in the field. Harrsion and Serrano have played their spots well. Harrison so much so I may be inclined to play him at SS a game to see what happens.

My assumption after watching back again is that maybe both of them were afraid of how the balls would bounce had they not gotten there? Obviously Nolan didn't play the ball in the air or the bounce very well at all.

Harrison played SS at Texas A&M so the move wouldn't be very hard for him, IMO. Really need Candelaria back in LF. Might be time to put Candelaria in center and let Nolan sit for a bit. Really need Soles and Trevor back out there.

Maybe Nolan didn't think he could catch the ball but I thought he really could have tried harder. An experienced left fielder would have communicated to him that he had his back (backed him up on the play) and Nolan could try to catch it if he thought he could. The ball was softly hit and high enough it wasn't going to roll to the wall anyway. Being tentative or afraid of what is going to happen is not the mark or a very good defensive player.
,
Green has been tentative at SS, as well. He may need a rest himself but this one to clear his mind. Maybe DH a game or two. He lays back on balls and doesn't cover the ground he should or could. I think his head is beating him now. He really doesn't want to play any balls. You can't have a SS play like that. He has to attack every ball. A move, like last year, to third may help him. Trice played second at ODU. Groover or Trice could play second with such a move. I agree about Candelaria, too. Pine time might be good for Nolan.

Avent has always played offense over defense and hoped his power pitchers to strike out a lot of guys. But the last two years, we have really struggled defensively. I believe it's time to juggle some defensive positions rather than just the batting order.

The thing keeping me from outright saying "FIRE AVENT!!!!111" is the fact that our facilities are pathetic and he's the only reason why we are remotely competitive. Avent isn't the best coach, I think everyone knows that, but he's the only reason we can land top 25 recruiting classes.

Wish he'd fire chrysler, though.

Sure. He's not the face of this program, though. Anecdotal, but I'm family friends with Dom Fritton's fam. He committed because he LOVES avent. At last year's christmas party, he said all his classmates LOVE avent.

Avent is the guy. Hart may be next in line and a good recruiter, but you're kidding yourself if you think we'd still pull the classes we do with just Hart and no Avent with our facilities.

I'm really not kidding myself. Avent is awesome, we all know that but he's also had to change his ways as not so long ago he turned kids off and we had a recruiting problem. Part of that change was bringing in Chris Hart. Another more recent change was bringing in Bo Robinson who kids love as well. Coach Bo is legit.

Why do you think Chris Hart is going to get the job when Elliott hangs up the cleats? Chris is also the recruiting coordinator for a reason. He took over that role in 2010...what happened in the 2011 class? We started to land in state studs...Rodon, Fincher, Austin, Ratledge...there were 3 other kids we landed that were drafted and signed from NC. Recent classes before 2011 didn't have a lot of NC flavor, we had no one from the Charlotte area either. Chris is also mad connected in his home state of Florida as we've seen the benefits of since he took over recruiting.

Don't kid yourself, without Chris Hart I'm not sure we pull the classes we are now.

Also, thanks for sharing the Fritton story. Love to hear stuff like that. I have plenty of those myself and it makes you feel good to hear such stories.

You bring up some good points, especially about Bo, who I forgot about. Chris is a stud, I agree, I just don't know what has gone wrong with recruiting these past 2 seasons. Maybe sometimes you just miss on kids.

Yeah, Fritton is cool and so is his fam. He LOVES avent big time. Also said avent barely coaches anymore during the offseason haha, I think Hart is taking on more responsibility

The injuries certainly aren't helping. I am not in the fire Avent camp either - I think Avent is alot like doeren - runs a good program and attracts kids that just like to play ball, but can be stubborn and slow to adapt. Hopefully they figure it out before things slip away this season.
