NC State infielder LuJames Groover III was named to USA Baseball's Golden Spikes Award Preseason Watch List, as announced by the organization on Friday afternoon.
Groover III, a native of Morrow, Georgia, is one of just 55 student-athletes featured on the preseason watch list. The Golden Spikes Award is awarded annually to the top amateur baseball player in the country.
Groover III is the 12th NC State player since 2008 to be named to the preseason watch list. His inclusion on the list also marks the sixth time in the last five seasons an NC State player has earned a spot on the preseason list.
In his first season with the Pack in 2022, Groover III earned Second Team All-ACC honors after leading the Wolfpack offense with a .364 batting average, 86 hits, 16 doubles and a .440 on-base percentage. He also finished second on the team with 65 runs scored and fourth on the team with 10 home runs.
The junior tallied at least one hit in 48 of the Pack's 57 games this past season, reaching base safely in 50 contests. He also led the Wolfpack with 27 multi-hit games, including a team-high 11 three-hit outings.
Groover III produced in the clutch for the Pack a season ago, hitting a game-winning home run in the team's extra-inning thriller against Quinnipiac on Feb. 26. He also scored the game-winning runs in back-to-back walk-off against UNCW (April 12) and Boston College (April 15).
Fan voting will again play a part in the Golden Spikes Award in 2023. Amateur baseball fans can vote for their favorite players on GoldenSpikesAward.com, beginning on May 22 with the naming of the semifinalists. USA Baseball will announce the finalists for the award on June 7, and fan voting will once again open at GoldenSpikesAward.com before closing on June 21.
