NC State baseball (33-17) exploded for nine runs in the first inning and never looked back as it downed UNCG (25-27), 10-2 (7), on Tuesday night at Doak Field at Dail Park.
With the victory, the Wolfpack swept this year's home-and-home series with the Spartans and finished the season with a 10-2 mark in midweek competition.
The Pack offense tallied 16 hits in the contest with four home runs, courtesy of
LuJames Groover III,
J.T. Jarrett,
Dominic Pilolli and
Tommy White.
Noah Soles (3-for-5), Jarrett (2-for-4) and White (2-for-4) drove in a game-high four runs each while every player recorded at least one hit, including six who turned in a multi-hit performance.
NC State got off to a hot start in the first, exploding for nine runs on six hits to mark the most the squad has scored in a single inning this season. After
Devonte Brown, Groover and
Josh Hood drew walks to load the bases, Soles drove in the first runs of the game with a 2-RBI double to left field. Following Soles, Jarrett extended the lead with a three-run home run to 5-0.
Jacob Cozart drove in the sixth run of the frame with an RBI single to score
Payton Green after he walked and stole second, and then Groover drove in the final three runs with a three-run homer to put the Pack out front, 9-0.
In the third the Spartans got on the board courtesy of a solo home run from Hogan Windish, but the Pack offense responded when
Tommy White cranked his 22nd home run of the year, a three-run shot to center field, making it 12-1.
With White's home run, he tied the ACC freshman home run record which was set by Florida State's Chris Diaz in 1998.
The Spartans added a run in the fifth, scoring on a wild pitch after loading the bases with three walks in four at bats, but then the Pack answered with another run in the fifth on a Soles RBI double to left center, extending the lead to 13-2.
In the sixth the Pack posted seven runs on six hits to take a commanding 20-2 lead. Pilloli led off the inning with his eighth home run of the season, a solo shot to center field, and after back-to-back singles from Green and Cozart and a hit-by-pitch by Groover, Green scored on a wild pitch. Following a White RBI sac fly, Hood, Soles and Jarrett tallied run-scoring hits and then another Spartan miscue tacked on the final run of the frame.
Starting pitcher
Justin Lawson tossed three complete innings, yielding one run on two hits and fanning five to secure his fifth win of the season. The trio of
David Harrison,
Carson Kelly and
Garrett Payne combined for four no-hit innings in relief.
