Was really worried this would be the case. Avent confirmed it postgame tonight.

Sucks, but I've been expecting it since word first came out.

Get well soon, Sam.

I would like to see us tinker this weekend against a putrid team and set up the rotation for last month/postseason like this:

Friday: Villaman (he quite simply hasn't thrown enough innings this year as our best arm. This has to change with Sam done)
Saturday: Willy
Sunday: Whitaker

Stopper/multiple innings of weekend relief: Silver
RH relief: Adams, Kelly, Payne, Nelson
LH relief: Harrison (try and get his mojo back this weekend)
Closer: Lawson (most consistent arm right now)

The midweeks are irrelevant the rest of the season. Total staff/development days.

Huge loss. He would've been key to a postseason run, are we thinking he comes back next season or will he be draft bound?

If he starts then who is your closer ?

Fixing a problem and creating one at this same time imho .

My counter argument is that you don't need a closer if you aren't winning the game. I'm not sure that starting Chris is what we should do, though it's something I've talked about all year, but if you do, I would have Lawson or Nelson in the closer role. I think we'll just keep platooning guys and hope to get to the 8th in a spot where Chris can come in and shut it down. We'll go as far as middle relief takes us this year.

Lawson can close. He's been lights out for a few weeks now against some good teams.

Villaman is barely in the top 5 on the team in innings pitched as your best arm. Also, it's not like we are moving a career reliever to starter. He's started in the past and done very well in that role.

Exactly. Villaman has been rendered meaningless in entire series this year (Northeastern, VT). Your starters throw more innings and impact every game. Last year it worked with Justice for two reasons: he wasn't good as a starter and they had three reliable starters. Not the case this year
