Baseball is a different sport. 4-5 games into the MLB regular season and not one team is undefeated or winless. Just enjoy the game and hope for the best.

.@NCStateBaseball downed UNC-W with a walk-off sac fly from Josh Hood.

Groover: "It feels pretty good. Every win's a big win. And I mean, all of them can't be pretty, and all of them can't be blowouts."

NC State baseball (20-11) scored five unanswered runs in the final three innings en route to its 7-6 walk off win over UNCW (18-13) on Tuesday evening at Doak Field at Dail Park.

Five of the Seahawks' six runs came by way of the home run and they all came in the first six innings. While facing a four-run deficit, the Wolfpack plated a pair of runs in the seventh and surged back with three runs on two hits in the ninth to eventually capture the victory.

Taber Mongero put the Seahawks on the board first with a solo shot to right field in the first inning, but the Pack quickly answered in the bottom frame with Dominic Pilolli's two-run homer to left field after LuJames Groover III reached on a one-out single to right field.

It was Pilolli's sixth home run of the season while Groover extended his hit streak to 18 and reached base streak to 21.

In the second inning Jac Croom tied things up at 2-2 with a leadoff homer to right field, and then he belted a two-run homer in the fourth to give UNCW its lead back and make it 4-2.

UNCW tacked on a run in the fifth on a squeeze play with runners at the corners, and then a solo home run to left field by Ethan Baucom in the sixth extended the lead to 6-2.

NC State cut into its deficit in the seventh when Payton Green led off the frame with a triple, his first of the year, and then scored on Jacob Cozart's RBI groundout to first to make it 6-3. Then, after Devonte Brown laced a double to left field and moved to third on a wild pitch, he scored on Groover's RBI groundout to third to make it 6-4.

In the eighth and ninth innings, Carson Kelly and Justin Lawson combined to retire six straight batters to keep it a two-run game heading into the bottom of the ninth. Kelly tossed 2.1 innings of hitless ball, and Lawson closed out the game to improve to 3-1 on the year.

In the NC State ninth, Cozart and Brown drew walks and Groover roped an outfield single to left field to load the bases up with no outs. Tommy White made it a one-run game with his RBI single through the left side, and then back-to-back sac flies from Pilolli and Josh Hood drove in the game-tying and eventually the game-winning runs.

Groover was responsible for crossing home plate for the win, marking the second time this season he was a part of a walk-off thriller.

NC State will continue its home stand later this week when it welcomes Boston College to Doak Field at Dail Park for a three-game series. The teams will play Thursday and Friday at 6:30 p.m. and Saturday at 1 p.m. Thursday's game will be NC State baseball's annual Military Appreciation Day, while Saturday will be its annual #StrikeOutALS Game.

Good win. Lots of upsets last night. A&T beat UNC (!!) Ga State beat GT. Miami was lucky to win late.

RPI is up to the mid 30s. Let's go broom BC.

I think he was probably out, but I really wish we had some better cameras setup for replays. Seems we are always missing the best angle. Tough break, don't blame him for trying to score there.
Question: Did the homeplate umpire make the call on Devonte? If so he was one of the two that went to review and then gave the signal when they came out. I thought that two officials not involved in the call had to be the ones to review?

Yes he made the call and looking live I thought he got it right. I think it's the crew chief and the umpire who makes the call but I could be wrong on that

I thought he was out. Great play by the catcher and pitcher and glad we won any way.

Fantastic mid-week crowd that hung in there to the very end! I don't get to too many games anymore, but glad I was at this one! Great comeback Pack!

As far as I am aware the guy involved in the call is always one of the two who reviews it. I've always thought it was a little weird, but that's how they do it.

I think he was out, but it was much closer than it looked live, because he was tagged high on the shoulder and his hand with the oven mitt was very close to touching the plate, which is why I posted that I wish we had more/better review angles. The plate was obscured in every view, so it wasn't possible to see the exact moment the mitt touched home and sync it to when the tag was applied to his shoulder. It was a very good play by the defenders, and because it took a perfect play to get him out, I'm cool with him trying to score there. Same reason I was glad we tagged up on the game winner, put pressure on the defense to execute the throw and catch.

It appears it is always the crew chief, but not always the individual that made the call. Ump behind the plate must have been crew chief, makes sense for a mid-week game.

The crew chief shall signal that a play is under video review pursuant to a head coach's challenge or crew chief discretion by pointing in the direction of the review equipment. The crew chief (even if he is the calling umpire) and another umpire (but not the calling umpire, when using centralized video review) shall move immediately towards the designated replay communication location. If an in-stadium field level monitor process is being used, then then the crew chief should select the next closest umpire to the play being reviewed, other than the calling umpire

Thanks for doing the leg work on that. It's still weird for the guy who made the call to be involved, even if he's the crew chief, but I guess it is what it is.

I think it's best for the guy who made the call to be involved. If he can see the mistake and then overturn it, it's better than if the other umpires come out and basically say you were wrong and not know exactly what happened to overturn it.

I can see that perspective. I just wonder if some guys will be so willing to admit that they were wrong and go into it looking for every reason to keep their call instead of looking objectively. I also am very biased against officiating, lol.

I hear you. I used to umpire baseball and softball, mainly softball. Anybody who tells you they have never missed one is lying.

I kind of wish they would do away with the replay. They probably only get it right 30-35% of the time and we both know that they have not been kind to N. C. State the last couple of years and have really screwed us.
