At the game. Team defense leaving a ton to be desired but man Josh Hood has looked smooth today. Just need some of the younger guys to develop

Are our guys coached to always take the first pitch? I swear we watch so many right down the middle and get behind early.

Weird because the first few innings they were going after everything early. Pretty sure the NE kid had a 6 pitch inning and was at like 20 through 2

No. 8 @NCStateBaseball came up short against the Northeastern Huskies despite some promising, if unproductive, days in the batter's box.

They have looked like a different team this weekend. Is J.T. Jarrett's absence the explanation? It surely has left a hole in the batting order. There were errors earlier in the season, but they seem more glaring now, and the pitching seems not nearly as good - is this just we were playing cupcakes, and the hitting covered up the problems? Not giving up on the team or season by a long shot - just remember last season, but it is unfortunate that all of the national talk is gone and those who were talking the Pack up now undoubtedly feel chagrined.

Despite plating three runs in the eighth and putting the game-tying run at the plate in the ninth to force extra innings, No. 4 NC State baseball (8-3) came up short to Northeastern (5-5) in the second game of its series, 8-5.

With the result, the Wolfpack drops the series and snaps its streak of 19 consecutive nonconference series wins.

Northeastern was able to take an early 2-0 lead after scoring two runs on as many hits in the second inning. With runners in scoring position following a Mark Darakjy leadoff single, Spenser Smith two-out walk and sac bunt by Teddy Beaudet, Luke Beckstein's 2-RBI single up the middle drove the runners in.

NC State tied things up in the fifth, making it 2-2. Will Marcy started the side with a single deep in the gap to the shortstop, and then a defensive miscue in an attempt to get the force out at second allowed Noah Soles to reach and put two on base. The next at bat Payton Green laced a single to right field to plate Marcy, and then Soles scored from third on a double play.

The Huskies regained their lead in the seventh with two more runs, giving them a 4-2 advantage. Max Viera roped a two-out double to left center to get things started in the frame, and then after Darakjy drew a walk Corey DiLoreto doubled to left center to allow the runners to cross home plate.

In the eighth Northeastern plated four more runs on three run-scoring singles and a failed pickoff attempt with runners at the corners, extending its lead to 8-2. In the bottom frame Marcy belted his second home run of the year to left field after LuJames Groover III and Dominic Pilolli both reached on outfield singles, cutting the Pack's deficit to 8-5.

The Pack looked to rally in the ninth when Devonte Brown drew a one-out walk and Tommy White laced a two-out single to left field to bring the tying run to the plate, but a force out at third ended the game.

Groover turned in his eighth multi-hit game of the year with a 3-for-5 outing, while Marcy turned in his third multi-hit performance and second multi-RBI game of the year.

On the mound, Matt Willadsen battled for six complete innings, surrendering two earned runs on seven hits while fanning six to keep the Pack in the game. Additionally, Justin Lawson tossed a season-long two innings to close out the contest and did not give up a run.

NC State and Northeastern will play the series finale Sunday at 12 p.m. at Doak Field at Dail Park. The game will be broadcast on ACCNX and there will be an audio stream on just the Varsity Network App until the conclusion of the ACC Women's Basketball Championship game, and then the stream will become available on WKNC 88.1.

Bad D and terrible pitching will usually do it. I'm less concerned about the pitching than the D. The bats need some adjustment. Feel like we have Pilolli in the heart of the order bc of what happened in game 1 of the year. Since then he hasn't been good. Seems like if White doesn't play out of his mind our O isn't very good, which is a tough ask for a true frosh

I can't figure Eisert out. When he makes good contact and gets the barrel to the ball, it doesn't go very far. There's something to work with there bc he does make contact, it just isn't very powerful

No. 4 NC State baseball (8-4) suffered a 6-0 loss to Northeastern (6-5) on Sunday afternoon in the series finale between the teams at Doak Field at Dail Park.

This was the first time since April 23, 2017 (1-0 loss at Boston College), that the Wolfpack had been shut out in a regular season contest.

For the third straight game, Northeastern scored first when Jeff Costello led off with a home run to left field. The Huskies then doubled their lead in the second on Luke Beckstein's bases-loaded sac fly to center field to make it 2-0.

Corey DiLoreto hit the second home run of the game for the Huskies in the third with a solo shot over the left field wall, and then three more runs on four hits, highlighted by Mark Darakjy's RBI single to right field and Spenser Smith's two-run infield single, and an error in the fifth extended Northeastern's lead to 6-0.

NC State looked to get on the board in the seventh when Josh Hood drew a one-out walk and Will Marcy hit a two-out single to the third baseman, but a fly out to center ended the threat. In the eighth the Pack once again managed to put multiple runners on base, but was unable to drive any runs in.

Payton Green turned in the team's lone multi-hit performance of the game, while four others tallied a base hit. On the mound Canaan Silver and Carson Kelly combined for four shutout innings, yielding just three hits while tallying six strikeouts. Kelly's four strikeouts in his outing matched his career high.

NC State returns to action Tuesday when it makes the trip to Greensboro, N.C., to face UNCG in a midweek tilt. First pitch is set for 3 p.m. at UNCG Baseball Stadium, and the game will be broadcast on ESPN+. Additionally, there will be an audio stream on WKNC 88.1 and the Varsity Network App.

No. 8 @NCStateBaseball continued its recent rut with a 6-0 loss to Northeastern. NC State made 9 errors in the series.

I was at Lake Lure all weekend so unfortunately I didn't get to see a ton of baseball (or maybe fortunately). What I did see, I came away impressed with Northeastern. They are an old team with some arms. I was impressed with their FR closer, dude looked like he was bringing it. Hard to tell from an iPhone tho. Very impressed with their defense.

My mistake was thinking that Green was going to be a bigger impact true FR than he has so far. I have been really impressed with Will Marcy so far conversely. I don't know if it's a confidence thing but Green hasn't flashed on D like I expected. Good news is he's got time to grow and he's been swinging the bat better lately.

I'd like to get JT back as at least we know he can handle the stick at the bottom of the order. I'd like to see him back down in the 9 spot. Other than that don't really know what to do with the lineup in general. Someone above mentioned Dom P and I think maybe he needs to be in that 6 or 7 spot where we had Luka last year.

Such a young young team.

Our worry going into the year was replacing the firepower lost. We didn't see it in the first couple weeks because we were playing bad competition, but need the bats to come alive. The pitching and defense is concerning though. Hopefully it was just a bad week and we get back on track soon.
