No. 7 NC State baseball held off a late rally on Saturday afternoon at Doak Field at Dail Park, clinching its series over Evansville with a 6-4 victory.
With a 6-0 lead heading into the final two innings the Purple Aces plated two runs apiece in an attempt to rally back and even the series, but the Pack managed to clinch its 18th consecutive nonconference series win and 11th-straight opening series win.
After three scoreless innings to start the contest, the Aces looked to get on the board in the fourth with the bases loaded on two outs, but third baseman
Josh Hood made an incredible diving play to get the Pack out of the side unscathed.
NC State took the momentum into the bottom frame when
Noah Soles drove in the first run of the day with a high chopper single. The lead was then doubled when
Devonte Brown hit a single up the middle with runners at the corners to tally his fourth RBI of the weekend.
In the sixth inning,
Tommy White tanked a grand slam to center field and extend the lead 6-0. On the weekend, White is 7-for-10 at the plate with 10 runs batted in, including four home runs.
The Aces plated two runs in the eighth via a Tanner Craig two-run home run to left field, then Evan Berkey drove in two runs in the ninth with a two-out outfield single to put the game-tying run on deck, but a fly out to Soles in right field sealed the victory.
On the mound,
Matt Willadsen battled for 4.2 innings and fanned six while limiting the Purple Aces to just one hit.
Canaan Silver picked up his second career win as he tossed 3.0 innings in relief and surrendered two late runs on two hits, while
Logan Whitaker made his first career appearance and threw the final 1.1 innings of the contest.
NC State tallied 13 hits on the day with five of those being for extra bases.
LuJames Groover III (3-for-4), Soles (3-for-4), Brown (2-for-4), White (2-for-4) and Hood (2-for-4) all turned in multi-hit performances at the plate while White led the squad with four RBIs. For Groover, Hood and White, it was their second consecutive multi-hit game of the weekend.
NC State returns to action Sunday when it looks to sweep its series over Evansville. First pitch is set for 1 p.m. at Doak Field at Dail Park, and the game will be broadcast on ACCNX.
