COMMIT ALERT: Wilson Makes It Official
NC State has landed a commitment from Orange (NC) linebacker Payton Wilson. The talented in-state player committed to the Wolfpack this afternoon.
Wilson is regarded as a consensus four-star recruit and one of the top linebackers in the country. This season he totaled 103 tackles and 10 sacks in just eight games, prior to tearing his ACL in October.
ESPN has Wilson rated the No. 2 outside linebacker in the country, and the No. 97 player overall. Wilson is rated the No. 7 outside linebacker in the country by Rivals, and 247 has him listed as the No. 3 outside linebacker, and the No. 65 player overall in the 2018 recruiting class.
He was selected to participate in the US Army All-American Bowl, but his injury will prevent him from doing so.
However, Wilson is a mid-year enrollee and he's is set to enroll at NC State in January.
"I love the coaches at State," Wilson previously told Inside Pack Sports. "Coach Doeren and Coach Huxtable are great guys, and I think they can really develop me into a better person and player. It's good being with them because I feel like I can open with them and be myself. I think they care about me as a person, not just a jersey with a number on it.
"Plus, I fit in at the school. I'm a country guy who loves to play hard-nosed football, and that's what they are about there. They care about football at State. They don't just go to watch until basketball season."
He originally committed to North Carolina after considering offers from multiple programs but decommitted last week. He previously held offers from NC State, UNC, Clemson, Virginia Tech, Notre Dame, and Georgia among others.
Wilson is the Wolfpack's 20th commitment in the 2018 recruiting class. We will have more from Wilson on his decision in the near future so stay tuned!
