The NC State women's cross country team won its first NCAA Championship in program history on Saturday, totaling 84 points to take home the team crown.

While the title is the first NCAA Championship in program history, it is the third national title won by the storied NC State program. The Wolfpack women's squads won the AIAW Championships in 1979 and 1980.

The Wolfpack was led by Kelsey Chmiel's sixth-place individual finish with a time of 19:34.6 while four additional members of the squad garnered All-American honors with their finishes.

Finally someone who knows the difference between the words "dominant" (an adjective) and "dominate" (a verb).

We are live here at the Belltower awaiting the arrival of @PackXC.

The National Champs are expected to be here in about 15 minutes.

A small crowd has been steadily growing over the last few minutes.

Tom Stafford handed the keys to the Belltower over to head coach Henes so that the team could take the trophy inside the Belltower.

After 38 years, NC State was able to welcome another NCAA Championship winning team back to the Belltower.

Henes: "I've been at NC State forever, getting to open up the Belltower and take a team inside. Amazing."

Do any posters know who is eligible to return for next season? Do we know if they plan to compete again to try to defend the title?

I just really started following the women's XC team after they won the national championship, so I don't know all that much. But of our top 5 finishers at the national meet, 3 are underclassmen who should definitely return next season - Bush, Tuohy, and Chmiel. The other 2 (Steelman, Hays) are listed as graduate students. I saw a video where Steelman said that this past season was her last for cross country. I'm not 100% sure on Hays, but I assume she has exhausted her eligibility.

Beyond that, we have a lot of elite talent coming back who are underclassmen. Marlee Starliper is a sophomore who apparently was injured both of her first two seasons, but was one of the very top recruits out of high school. Brooke Rauber is another top recruit (freshman this year) who competed some this past season, and had some solid results almost on the level of our top 5. And I saw via the official XC twitter account where they just signed another elite recruit out of New Zealand, Hannah Gapes.

Between Starliper, Rauber, and Gapes...hopefully at least 2 of these 3 can replace the 2 of our top 5 who are not returning...and we could be in the hunt for another national title next year. There may be others on the roster who can help us compete for another NC, but those are just the 3 I've looked at.

State has a lot of reason to be very confident going into next year. They should be in the preseason top 3, if not #1. There's a lot of talent on the team, but as always, we need a couple of them to step up. Chmiel and Tuohy are already studs and should continue to be top-10 threats. Bush was a surprise this year, and so far in the indoor season she's still improving (she was nowhere near the caliber of Tuohy or Chmiel in HS). There are definitely some superstar recruits over the last couple of years who haven't broken through yet, so we'll need a couple to step up to replace Steelman and Hays, as well as cover for any injuries. Steelman and Hays were both transfers in the last couple of years, so we could potentially see another stud transfer in.

From the 2021 XC Championships:
Place Team Score - Runners in order
1 NC State 84 - SO, FR, SR, SR, SO, JR, SR - Lose 3,4,7
2 BYU 122 - SR, SR, JR, SR, SR, SO, SO - Lose 1,2,4,5
3 New Mexico 130 - FR, SO, SR, SR, JR, FR, FR - Lose 3,4
4 Colorado 187 - SR, FR, SR, SR, SR, FR, SR - Lose 1,2,3,4,7
5 Notre Dame 215 - SO, SO, SR, FR, JR, SR, JR - Lose 3,6
6 Stanford 233 - SR, FR, SR, FR, FR, FR, FR - Lose 1,3
7 Minnesota 313 - SR, SR, SR, JR, JR, JR, SR - Lose 1,2,3,7
8 Arkansas 328 - JR, SO, SR, SO, JR, JR, SR - Lose 3,7
9 Iowa State 332 - SR, SR, JR, SO, SO, SO, FR - Lose 1,2
10 Ole Miss 350 - SO, SO, SR, SR, JR, FR, SO - Lose 3,4
11 Washington 366 - SR, JR, SR, SO, FR, JR, FR - Lose 1,3
12 Wisconsin 376 - SR, SO, SO, JR, SR, SO, SR - Lose 1,5,7
13 Oklahoma St 404 - JR, JR, SR, SR, SR, SO, SO - Lose 3,4,5
14 North Carolina 405 - FR, FR, FR, FR, FR, FR, SR - Lose 7
15 Alabama 428 - JR, SO, SR, SO, JR, JR, JR - Lose 3

BYU loses a ton, but they've been an incredible program for years. They might reload, but I'd expect them to drop off a bit next year. Same with Colorado.
New Mexico should be strong next year, as will Notre Dame and Stanford. Arkansas and Ole Miss should still be good. UNC might not do it next year, but in two years they could be a top 5 contender.

Interesting to see what the other top teams are bringing back. Nice that BYU is losing a lot.
