McDonough's two homers lead offensive explosion as Wolfpack takes rubber match

NC State baseball is on some kind of a roll right now. The Wolfpack came up with another big victory Sunday, topping Wake Forest 15-8 at David F. Couch Ballpark to win the rubber match and capture the series win.

The Wolfpack has won six of its last seven games and four of its last six ACC series. Since starting the season 4-9, NC State is 18-5. The Wolfpack also started ACC play 1-8, but now has a winning record in conference play at 14-13.

The Pack’s offense knocked Wake’s pitching around all day Sunday, with 15 runs on 20 hits. The Wolfpack homered four times against the Demon Deacons. Tyler McDonough went yard two times in a 4-for-6 day that saw him drive in four runs. Terrell Tatum also hit a three-run homer, and Austin Murr homered and drove in two in a 3-for-5 outing.

Reid Johnston got the nod on the mound for the Wolfpack, and allowed six runs on nine hits in 6.1 innings wile striking out four and walking none.

After the Demon Deacons took the lead with back-to-back homers in the bottom of the second, NC State went to work in the top of the third, scoring three times to take its first lead of the day.

The Wolfpack tacked on three insurnace runs in the top of the fourth on Murr’s two-run homer and McDonough coming home on an error to push its lead to 6-2. NC State completely broke it open in the top of the sixth, pushing its lead to 12-2 on McDonough’s first homer, an RBI triple for Luca Tresh and Tatum’s homer.

Those insurance runs proved to be important, as Wake sandwiched six runs in the bottom of the sixth and seventh innings around McDonough’s second homer, a solo shot, to make it a 13-8 game. NC State added two more runs in the top of the eighth to close out the scoring.

Next up for the Wolfpack is a mid-week tilt against Elon at Doak Field Tuesday with a 6 p.m. first pitch.

Love Pack baseball and hope these continue to figure it out.

Amazing what this team has done over the last five weeks with the shortest pitching regime in the conference.

We win a rubber match against an in-state rival to grab a winning ACC record on the year and this is what you come to post? GTFO.

I know WF sucks as some say, but when we were 1-8 in the ACC we sucked also. We've turned it around despite that large softball field they play on. Pitching has to get healthy tho.

Baseball has done an amazing job at turning it around, with continuing issues of injuries and absences, particularly for the bullpen.

They really have come together as a team. Amazing what they've been able to do especially on the road

It's almost like we've played two separate seasons....truly incredible.

If we could only get some pitchers healthy. Our defense and hitting have been really good! Go Pack!

This is a question coming from a true baseball novice. A 12-3 record on the road for any sport is pretty shocking. Our home record as shockingly the antithesis of our awesome road record. I have heard several comments about Doak field being an issue, but I am not sure I understand exactly why or what the issue is? Is it the field size, distance to the wall? Like Omaha? I take it that there is a consensus among those of you that know baseball that Doak field is a significant factor to why we are not as competitive at home as we are on the road?

I think when you hear people talk about Doak hurting us it's more from the standpoint of recruiting, not games. The road vs home record this year is more likely just a result of which teams we've played on the road, and the timing of those games. We started the year with three home series against GT, Miami, and Louisville, who are all currently in the top 15, and went 1-8 in those games. That also coincided with a losing guys to injury and covid pause. Our away series have been against UNX, BC, ND, and WF, with three of those teams being at the bottom of the league, and two of them within a close drive to home. Our most difficult out of conference road game was probably UNCG. Just how things have worked out this year.
