IPS NC State Fantasy Football Draft: Rounds 1 and 2
Inside Pack Sports staff members James Henderson, Jon Stout, Ethan Barry, and Andrew Schnittker recently conducted an all-time NC State Fantasy Football Draft.
The six-round snake draft consisted of each team selecting a quarterback, running back, a wide receiver, two defensive players, and a flex position.
The draft order was random generated with James receiving the first pick followed by Jon, Ethan, and Andrew.
Here is a look at the first two rounds of the draft.
NOTE: We will post two rounds of each draft. Following the three stories we will also post the podcast of the actual draft.
ROUND 1
1.01 James Henderson – RB Ted Brown
Part of my strategy was to wait on quarterback and mainly because I felt Ted Brown was the biggest no-brainer on the board.
He’s clearly the standard at running back, as he remains the ACC’s all-time leading rusher and is in the College Football Hall of Fame.
Taking Brown at 1.01 should set the table for me to build an extremly strong team.
1.02 Jon Stout - WR Torry Holt
I had to go with “Big Game” Torry Holt with the No. 2 pick.
Holt’s stats have stood the test of time, as he still holds all-time records in receiving yards and touchdowns for a career, single season, and single game at NC State.
Holt finished his career with 3,379 receiving yards and 31 touchdowns, and his 1,604 yards as a senior in 1998 still stands as the single season record in ACC history.
1.03 Ethan Barry - DE Mario Williams
I was planning to go with a QB or Ted Brown, but having Wilson and Rivers both available at my next pick made me go best player available.
For me, that’s the headliner of some of NC State’s best defenses ever, who sits second in school history in sacks and went first overall in the 2006 NFL draft.
1.04 Andrew Schnittker - QB Philip Rivers
I definitely did not expect to have Philip Rivers available at No. 4 here. My initial strategy was going to be to wait on a quarterback, but I could not pass up the cream of the crop in a long line of great NC State quarterbacks.
Rivers is the all time leader for both NC State and the ACC in passing yards with 13,384, first for the school and seventh for the conference with 34 touchdowns and first in school history with 1,087 completions.
He led NC State to 11 wins and a Gator Bowl victory in the 2002-03 season, and he’s an easy choice for me here.
ROUND 2
2.01 Andrew Schnittker - DE Bradley Chubb
This is a guy who I was really hoping would be available at this turn, and I wasn’t disappointed.
Chubb is the school’s all-time leader in career sacks with 26, and though he wasn’t drafted as high as Williams, you can make the argument that Chubb was the best player in the 2018 draft – but the first four teams all had other needs.
Chubb won the Bronko Nagurski award as the best defensive player in the country after the 2017 season and was just an absolute game wrecker for the Wolfpack.
2.02 Ethan Barry - QB Russell Wilson
I knew I was taking Philip or Russell here, and Andrew made the pick for me. I probably would have taken Wilson over Rivers, anyway, just given the former’s pure talent level and the fact that he did so much with a lot less talent around him than Rivers had.
2.03 Jon Stout - FLEX Jaylen Samuels
I’m expecting that some will question my second-round pick, but Jaylen Samuels’ ability to impact the game from multiple positions was invaluable. Opponents had to be aware of where he was lined up at all times, whether that was in the backfield, split out wide, or on the line. And let’s not forget he threw a touchdown pass in his junior campaign, too.
Jay Sam finished his career with NC State as the all-time leader with 202 catches, and his 15 catches in the 2017 season opener against South Carolina gives him a two-way tie with Torry Holt for the most in a single game.
Samuels holds the school record among tight ends for career receiving yards (1,855), receptions (202), and he only trails the legendary Ted Brown for first all time with 47 total career touchdowns.
2.04 James Henderson – WR Jerricho Cotchery
With Torry off the board I wanted to lock up my wide receiver, and I felt like there were three easy options with the safest being Cotchery.
He’s near the top of the list in every statistical category for a receiver and left NC State as the team’s all-time leader in catches.
Was he flashy? No, but few were more productive than Cotchery.
