Nick Swiney's Dominance Continues, Adds Multiple Honors
RALEIGH – After a dominant performance that led to NC State baseball’s 6-0 shutout win over Purdue last weekend in the CambriaCollegeClassic, junior left-handed pitcher Nick Swiney has been named the Atlantic Coast Conference Pitcher of the Week and one of Collegiate Baseball’s National Players of the week, as announced by the publications on Monday.
Hosted by Minnesota inside U.S. Bank Stadium in Minneapolis, Minn., Swiney helped the seventh-ranked Wolfpack to a 3-0 sweep and clinch the tournament title. The weekly honors are the first of his career.
On Feb. 28 versus Purdue, he threw a career-long eight innings and struck out a career-high 15 batters. Swiney yielded just one hit in the first at bat of the game, and starting with the final out of the first inning he retired 22 batters in a row.
It was his second combined shutout of the season as he improved to 3-0 on the mound in as many starts. Additionally, he currently leads the NCAA with 37 strikeouts in his 21.0 innings pitched.
The Huntersville, N.C. native was the first since All-American Carlos Rodon on April 25, 2014 vs. Georgia Tech to fan 15 batters in a single game.
Swiney and the rest of the Wolfpack (11-0) return home Wednesday for a midweek matchup with Coastal Carolina at Doak Field at Dail Park. First pitch is 3 p.m., and the game will be aired on the ACC Network.
