On hosting a pro day:
It’s a great opportunity for them to showcase four to five years of hard work. It’s something they’ve earned. A great audience, so many NFL teams, head coaches, scouting departments present because of the body of work these guys have created.
You tell them all when they get here, it’s a resume they have to write, and these guys have done a great job, not just with their play but the way they’ve gone about it and the way they carry themselves and what they represent on and off the field for us.
It’s fun to see them, we miss them, seeing them all together like that, we had some good seniors. Just so happy for them to have a day like this.
On how important this day is as he builds a program:
Instead of having to talk about what you want to do, it’s the ability to show it… Watching them adds credibility to what you’re talking about. That’s what it all is. You don’t want to have to explain the blueprint to somebody that you can’t visually show them.
This is what we’ve been saying we can do, from a developmental standpoint, how we are going to coach you and how we are going to train you so that other people are interested you after your career.
This is just proof.
On his conversation with Bill Belichick:
Yeah I mean he is asking details about guys and how they practice and what kind of person is he, about their family. It’s just like when we go to a high school, you want to go and get all the background you can get on somebody and know what you’re really getting. Just asking those kind of questions.
Growth that we’ve seen, how they’ve handled adversity and some of it just talking about people that we both know. His d-line coach and I were college teammates, Brendan Daly, he’s also here today. It was fun seeing him and getting a chance to meet Coach Belichick and learn how he looks at things.
Obviously he’s done a great job evaluating so it’s interesting to see how he looks at these kind of events and what he’s looking for.
On Bradley Chubb and his relationship with Kentavious Street, BJ Hill and Justin Jones:
Bradley is a two-time captain. He’s a great leader. He’s always gone about it with his work ethic and what he believes in. He didn’t need to do the testing things, which he didn’t do today but definitely got out there and was a part of the workout.
I think those four guys love each other so much and going through that together was one more thing they wanted to do.
On the impact he and the program have had on the players leaving:
It’s very rewarding. Our culture, we talk about unentitling people and teaching them the value of earning what you’re going to get, because that’s how life is, no one gives you anything. I think these guys bought in to that early in their career and now they’re reaping the benefits.
For me, it’s like a proud dad, watching people you look at like your sons and seeing them take advantage of their skill set and the opportunity they have.
Opportunities aren’t given, they’re earned and these guys have earned them greatly.
On how important the pro day is for guys who weren’t invited to the combine:
For the guys who aren’t at the combine, pro day is their combine, so it’s huge. Everything they do, from the evaluation part to the interview part.
Obviously the physical workout, the combine testing, all that wrapped into one is a huge day for them and the question marks people may have had about them, it gives them a chance to answer those physically and in person, how they talk and their aptitude for the game and their leadership ability.
