Case Commons Project Shelved By NC State
NC State officials have confirmed to Inside Pack Sports that the athletics department has canceled plans for the building of Case Commons Residence Hall.
Construction for the dormitory was expected to begin in the spring of this year but a variety of factors including market escalations and a coaching change played a role in the delay.
Members of the men's and women's basketball team, 15 players each, would have been housed in the dormitory while the rest of the rooms were to be issued to students from the general population along with some resident advisors.
"The Case Commons Residence Hall project was conceived with the overarching objective of providing greater security for our student-athletes from agent activity and other negative influences, with the added benefit of strong proximity to the heart of campus, and to their primary areas of academic work and athletic training," NC State Director of Athletics Debbie Yow said.
"Regrettably, during the planning process, a variety of factors have escalated construction and labor costs making it unfeasible to complete this project within the approved budget," Yow added. "For that reason, we’ve made the fiscally responsible decision not to proceed with this project."
Case Commons Residence Hall was slated to have 48 rooms: 30 single rooms and 14 double rooms, as well as four single rooms for resident advisors.
Projected to cost $15 million dollars, Case Commons Residence Hall would have been privately funded with no state funds or tuition dollars used.
"There are new and improved living options on and in close proximity to campus," Yow said. "We believe we will be able to accomplish our objectives through these and other future options."
As of now there are no new plans to begin construction for any alternatives.
