There are some real gems on there. Games I never thought I'd see again....

1988 - Burlington Cummings @ Shelby - NC AAA State Title - Cummings had former UNC QB Chucky Burnett, WR Jamie Harris(RIP), former GT QB Donnie Davis(but he was a WR here), former NCSU WR Ray Griffis

1997 - Gaffney vs. Northwestern - SC AAAA D-1 State Title - Kentrell Jones was QB at Gaffney and boy was he something else

1987 - Garner @ Harding - NC AAAA State Title - Anthony Barbour went nuts and the whole town of Garner made that trip to Charlotte

1998 - NW Cabarrus @ AL Brown - The Beat Down in K-town - Nick Maddox had like 10TDs that game Final was 97-0 - word has it that the NWC coaches were flipping off the K-town coaches pregame

I will get crushed for this. I miss this Football; the kids played for the love of the game. With all the new NIL bull shi*. These kids did not look out for their "Insta". They played for their love of the game.

Hey I'm with you. HS football even had it's better days too. Now schools recruit like crazy, Tommy Knotts was the Godfather of recruiting at the HS FB level in NC. West Charlotte, Independence, now Dutch Fork in SC. Something like 16 state championships at just those 3 schools. Indy and Dutch Fork were particularly impressive recruiting jobs, those were average programs when he took over, now nationally ranked every year...even in "rebuild years". The other problem hitting HS football in the Carolinas these days is private schools in the public school league, right now a little more of a prob in SC...heck NC State's own former walk on Brent Laprad is HC at a school in Charleston called Oceanside and they just won another championship...they have hardly any fans, no band to speak of, a tiny building of a school, teeny tiny football stadium....but yet they have back to back AAA titles and only have been around 10 years. There are more schools like that in SC, little football factories.

Here is one many of you will remember but its from Texas. Plano East and John Tyler. Craziest last couple minutes of any FB game

I've tried and tried but I cant find any videos on the 1999 High Point Central football team. Triple Option O, another well coached Gary Whitman led team... Rashad Stephenson at QB over 1000 yards rushing, Chuckie Reed and Ricky Haywood at RB and both had over 2000yds each. Calvin Humphries had 15 ints that year breaking a state record, and Brandon Greeson who went to Nebraska clogged the middle of the DL. Even the kicker Wick Brenner was top notch. They blew out everyone, even in the State title game they won 30-7 over SW Onslow. They did have a W.T.F. game against East Davidson, HPC won 20-15 but ED gave them all they could handle....had a friend that played for ED and he said ED had 4 days of perfect practices going into that game.

crazy as heck to me that the 2025 HPC team did not score a point the entire season and the 2026 football season has been suspended and FB will be brought back in 2027. SMH. Never thought a FB program could fall that far.

I heard that about Central. Thats an insanely bad stat. What on earth is happening there? Thomasville has really fallen off as well. We get to the playoffs but that's about it. Our numbers and talent are just way down like many small towns who used to have big programs.

No I didnt go to Lexington but have some cousins that did. Had cousins at Lexington, East Davidson and Central Davidson. I went to Trinity HS my senior year. I did go to several Thomasville games at Cushwa. I remember Allen Brown and Benji later taking over. That lil town had some talent.

I did a lot of furniture peddling in NYC and DC with some Thomasville/Trinity folks, the Honeycutts mainly.... Big Tim, little Brad, T.T. and Allison...that family was crazy. Like they followed zero laws...from Tax evasion to driving big rigs with no CDL(Big Tim made me drive the big rig once from Jersey City to the Delaware state line and I had no CDL), to their cocaine and crack use(I only smoked weed lol)....they paid me well on the road but holy moly, the craziness I experienced working with them...this was back before cellphones were popular, sometimes I'd go over to hang out with lil Brad or TT just hopng they were at home and they wouldnt be there but their mom would invite me in to smoke a doobie...she was literally one of the coolest mom's ever. I have some stories from my time hanging out and working with them that would blow your dang mind. Trinity and Thomasville had some of the craziest people I've ever met...from Finch Farm Rd to Hwy 62 to Meadowbrook Rd, just the most insane people ever.

Hahahaha Holy Smokes may man!! I lived off Finch Farm Rd for a bit and then mostly in Thomasville near the high school. I dont know that family but I know of them. Sounds like you have some amazing stories. You are right - Thomasville has some of the most insane people in the state. Even my friends I made at State who thought their down east people were wild had nothing on Tville/High Point.

Allen Brown was one of the best football coaches of all time. Benji of course learned from the best and was also good winning 3 in a row with Allen as his Defensive Coordinator after Allen "retired." I miss those days and teams. We still have some serious skill talent but we dont have the numbers or the size we used to. When Thomasville Furniture left, it really hurt and many of the football families moved away. For our town our size, we have put our fare share of folks in the NFL.

I remember working at the city golf course in Tville. Winding Creek. The course pro would be hammered every evening...he'd pull his car down to the gas pumps for the golf carts and fill his gas tank about every other day....then those of us working at the cart shed would do the same. Summer of 1999 I didnt pay a dime for gas....then they replaced all the gas carts with battery carts. One day when the course pro was hammered, he asked us if we wanted to race...it was me, the dude that played for East Davidson, and the course pro...we jammed the governors on those carts and went racing around the course trails.....the course pro hooked me going into a turn and put my cart in one of the ponds there lol. Luckily he had a wench on his pickup and we were able to get it out.

And Finch Farm Rd had an insane amount nascar talent living off that road at the time....Kyle Petty, Adam Petty, Bobby Labonte, Terry Labonte, Justin Labonte all lived off that road...Brian Vickers lived around there too. My brother who has worked at Thomas Built Busses since the 1980's use to race at Tyro, North Davidson, and Coleridge kart tracks, he was basically Adam Petty's teammate when Adam went racing karts before stock cars.

And yes the small town FB has really been hit hard around there....East Burlington where Cummings HS is is much like Thomasville, old abandoned factories all over that area....thats what made Cummings and Thomasville so good was the kids of the factory workers. In fact think the last time I ever went to Cushwa was a Cummings/Thomasville game. Both programs had so much respect for each other.

yea it sucks. HP Andrews is doing okay but other than that there are some suffering inner city FB programs around there. At the same time some schools are really coming on like Randleman, Ledford, and Southern Guilford

My brother worked for the Labontes for awhile and Justin Labonte was at Thomasville with me for a couple of years.

Those Cummings/Tville games were some of the best. Extreme respect for each other. Cushwa would be thumping in those days. Furniture/textile industry just killed these places. So sad. What probably. needs to happen is a school like Thomasville combines with East or Ledford.

I honestly cant remember the course pros name. Jason Gentle is the course pro now but he wasnt even working there back then....eta just remembered the course pro was named Ken. I dont remember his last name however.

And yes I could def see some of those schools combining down the road. Especially East and Tville. Ledford is getting bigger and better each year though thanks to WinstonSalem basically extending itself into northeastern davidson county.

yes sir one helluva football program and football town. Much respect for Garner...back when Richmond Co was nationally ranked every year Garner would give them a good game in the playoffs

Definitely not what they used to be. I think what's hurt them is more local high schools and kids going to schools outside of their home base school. It started when South East was built and split North and East Garner, Garner had their picking up till that point.

I still think Maurice Mebane was a little better, in fact one of the best WRs in NC HS football history. But both were great. Still crazy to me that Jamie Harris was shot in his head over a girl. Mebane wore #3 in memory of Harris. One big difference between the two was Jamie Harris didnt come off the field, ever....he was starting WR and starting CB.

Overall their best offensive skill players was probably in 2001 and 02. They had Drew Williamson at QB(Elon), Tony Leath(Marshall) and LJ Flintall(Wake) at RB...WR Bryan Manning(AppSt), WR Iverick Harris(ECU), WR Michael Enslow(GaMilitary), and WR/DB Michael Hinton(VaTech). DBs Barry Tate(Catawba) and Brandon Tate(UNC), LB Durrell Mapp(UNC) and OL Benji Hayes(AppSt) were also on that team...I dont understand how a 2A HS can have that much talent but they did....and they'd reload like it was nothing. Cummings is one of the most unique and interesting football programs there is...funny thing is I'm actually related by marriage to the Hugh Cummings family...my great great uncle was Carl Parks, Cummings son and Carl Parks daughter married each other....Cummings and Parks were also business partners, hence the name Cum-Park Plaza, lots of funny jokes over recent years from that....this is my favorite....(highly photoshopped)

and that Wendys you see back there was run by a man named Dave Forrester...known on the wrestling circuits as "The Assassin" back in the 70's...he was one of at least a few to go by that name...he was a former Cummings player and PA announcer for the FB games....one of the nicest men you'd ever meet, he passed away a couple yrs ago.

Dude. When I was in High School, we played pickup football games in the side yard of Hugh Cummings, III's house on Edgewood Avenue every Sunday afternoon during the fall... bunch of neighborhood guys mostly, but we had between 25-30 there every week. Small world.

my uncle currently lives on Walker Ave just a few streets over from Edgewood. Yes sir very small world.

If you ever heard of Clapp Brothers Furniture, that was my grandpas business.....he owned that whole building downtown and his first tenant was LabCorp...to this day the floor tile in front of the original LabCorp is still there and spells out LabCorp on the tile....they had long since moved out when I was young, the place turned into a Army surplus store, I'd go over there and get some MREs and pretend I was I was a soldier in the jungle on the 2nd and 3rd floors of the furniture store lol

Crazy to me that I never actually lived in Burlington, but that was def my home away from home since I had so much family there and went there every Christmas and Thanksgiving. I was born in the old Burlington hospital to Dr John Kernodle over by Western Steakhouse.

And to this day when I go to Burlington I make sure I go to Skid's off ChurchSt. Love that daggum place.

Grew up on Lakeview Terrace off of Briarcliff a couple houses back up the street from Dr. Abernethy / Abernethy's Lake.

When I lived back there for a stint as an adult 1992-2005, I last lived on Woodland, right at the bottom of the sledding hill - exactly one street over from Walker.

Of course I know exactly where Clapp Brothers was... when I was back there in the 90's, LabCorp owned probably 1/2 of downtown already. Not sure what that downtown area looks like now, because after my dad passed in 2015 we don't have any reason to go through there anymore - but I understand that Downtown has many of the modern type offerings now, brewery, etc... wild thing was growing up just down York Road from Carolina Biological and Old Man Powell's house, somewhere in that 12-14 year old age bracket we played inside the original Carolina Biomedical headquarters as it was under construction (later became Roche and then LabCorp). Jim built that thing up into an empire.

Grew up with your same Dr. Kernodle's kids - two of which were at State when I was.

My first summer job at age 15 was making boxes at Star Foods. My neighbor was one of the owners. Still downtown in the same location to my knowledge...

Ha. What else do you want to know?

(Good thing you put this on "Light It Red" or I'd probably be outing myself)

haha holy cow man. My Uncle David (Clapp) worked at Star Foods a long time ago. He became a maintenance man at some complex in Chapel Hill after that. He lives down in Saxapahaw these days. You ever go to Zack's hot dogs like a block or two away? Best daggum hot dogs and burgers ever.

and wow. I had no idea that Dr Kernodle's kids went to State. That's f'ing bada**. I grew up in a family of tarheels so any connection to State I can find is wonderful.....so my granny was the secretary in the 80's at SellersGunn when it was an alternative/vocational school...her boss and the principal was Ken Rogers...he turned me into an NC State fan when I was about 5 years old, he told my granny he'd do it and he did. He'd buy me toys just to get me to like State more than UNC. Ken passed in 1991 I think it was, he was at some convention down in Atlanta and had a heart attack in his hotel room. He was like a dad to me....he actually went to SellersGunn when it was the black school during segregation....he loved talking about his FB playing days at SG.

My great grandfather was well known around town too....Tommy Parks....he built the Graham Courthouse and almost every brick house you see in east Burlington.

My mother just told me over the phone she went to Williams HS with Dr Abernathy's daughter back in the late 60's...

thank you Storm. I've spent about 5 hours on the phone with uncles and cousins in Burlington/Graham today. Our conversation pushed that. I got told "I love you" by all 3 of them at the end of each fulfilling phone call. I needed this. I really really did. You da man...and you too Port City. Thank you guys so much, all of you.

Summerville won this game 2-0 over Conway. This was played at "The Graveyard"...Conway's old stadium which is where Coastal Carolina's football stadium is today...amazing defensive game....oddly enough I also saw Summerville in the best ever offensive shootout too...in 2010 Goose Creek beat Summerville 64-57 in 3 OTs. John McKissick coached Summerville in both games....the most winningest HS football coach in the country

this is the FIRST HS football game I ever went to....my brother was in the Myrtle Beach HS marching band. Doug Shaw was the coach at Myrtle....Chuck Jordan was the coach at Conway. Conway won this one, and in 1988....but in 1989 almost all the black players at Conway boycotted the season as Chuck Jordan moved the returning black starting QB (Carlos Hunt) to WR and started a white kid at QB (Mickey Wilson) and Myrtle beat Conway for the 1st time in 7years and Conway went 1-10 that year. The NAACP urged the black players to boycott and all but a few of the black players did. The situation made Sport Illustrated.

Mickey Wilson is now the head coach at Myrtle Beach and has won a few state championships

My cousin was the kicker for Conway in the late 90's!
