The NC State softball team dropped the series opener, 51, after Pittsburgh (14-10, 1-3) used a five-run fifth inning to pull away Friday evening at Dail Softball Stadium.

The Pack moves to 18-9 overall and 0-1 in ACC play.

How it Happened
Both teams were quiet early, as neither side recorded a run through the first two innings.
NC State threatened in the second after Lily Livingston doubled and Morgen Talley singled, but Pittsburgh escaped the inning without allowing a run.
The Pack broke through in the third inning when Carly Short launched a solo home run to left center field to give NC State a 10 lead.
Pitt answered in the fifth inning, starting with an RBI double from Tieley Vaughn that tied the game.
Later in the frame, Calle Henne delivered a two-run single to give the Panthers a 31 advantage.
A defensive miscue allowed another run to score in the inning, extending the Pittsburgh lead to 41.
The Panthers added an insurance run in the seventh when Henne drove in Vaughn with an RBI single.
NC State was unable to rally in the final inning, as Pittsburgh retired the side to seal the 51 win.

Dropping two of three games in the conference-opening series, @PackSoftball fell to Pittsburgh in Game 3 with a chance to win in extra innings.

The Pack made three errors in the rubber match, contributing to the loss.

The Palm Harbor, Fla., native posted a .500 batting average and a 1.100 slugging percentage over a three-game span last week. She recorded five hits, including two home runs, to lead the team in both categories.

Talley also drove in a team-best five RBI and scored four runs. Against No. 22/25 Arizona State, she went 2-for-3 at the plate with a home run while also tossing 6.0 innings in the circle, striking out three and allowing just two earned runs.

During the team's third ACC series, Talley helped lead the Pack to a doubleheader sweep over Syracuse. In game one, she threw a complete game, matching her career high with eight strikeouts. She carried a no-hitter into the sixth inning before Syracuse recorded its first hit.

In game two, Talley went 2-for-4 at the plate with a two-run home run, marking her team-best ninth of the season.
