Really big game at home vs UNC this Friday (Sept 5th) at 7:30 pm. UNC was ranked #15 a week or so ago, but apparently dropped out of the rankings due to a loss a few days ago.

They set the home attendance record about a week and a half ago with a crowd of ~3,200. I think they should break that at this match for sure. I just checked and the Student Wolfpack Club has this match as one of their "Minute Events", which will draw probably at least 1,000 students to be in attendance.

There almost certainly will not be enough seats, and people will be sitting on the grass hill by the stands, or standing. Also, a reminder that entry is free for all soccer matches (no ticket required).

I was at the unc match last night. The amount of people there was absolutely IN SANE. The stands were around 85-90% full 20-25 minutes before the start of the match, and hundreds of people just kept pouring in every couple minutes. As you walked in from the entrance gate even 15 minutes before the match, it was a jam-packed slow "line" of people walking (packed like sardines in a can) at snail's pace in that narrow walkway back behind the stands.

Eventually by the start of the match , the stands were absolutely 99% full to capacity and people had filled up every square foot of the grass hills on either side of the permanent stands. They would not allow people to stand on the track, so about a hundred more were standing under the pine trees at the far northeastern end of the stadium. And you had people two or three deep standing everywhere above the top row of permanent stands. Eventually they closed the gates and would not allow any more people in, and so hundreds more people stood outside of the stadium right next to the fence between the sidewalk on Cates Avenue and the stadium and watched the game from there.

After the game was over, I stuck around and it literally took 15 minutes for all 5,000 people to leave the stadium. It was impossible to clear out any faster because of there being only that one entrance/exit right there off Cates Avenue in between the softball field and track & soccer field. And so it created a massive bottle neck.

Immediately after the game, for some reason about 3 or 4 thousand of the crowd went out of the stands and the grass hills and down on the track, I guess thinking it would be quicker to get out of the stadium by then coming up those stairs that go down about 20 feet in elevation from near the entrance to between the track and softball field. But that didn't help, as there was a bottle neck at the stairs (where people could only walk 4 wide). So there was just about 3 or 4 thousand people down there on the track and between the softball field and track just standing there for 15 minutes as that massive crowd slowly passed up the bottle neck at the stairs. Here's a picture I took of that.

Quote from the article on the crowd. Pictures of the crowd alone may not convey how many people were there. If you add in the hundreds standing and watching the game on the top of the Reynolds parking deck and the hundreds more standing and watching behind the fence between the sidewalk along Cates Avenue and the stadium and the hundreds more who were turned away after they closed the gates, there could have been 6,000 or 7,000 people there.

Quote:

The 5,083 fans in attendance don't even include the hundreds of fans crowded on the top two levels of Reynolds Deck and outside the stadium fence undoubtedly adding to a remarkable atmosphere.

"If you compare this environment to our game at UNC last year, it's not even close," said head coach Marc Hubbard. "So the fact that we walk out in warm ups and the place is packed, and loud [with] noise, that is just stuff that our guys will always remember."
