After 95 years being in downtown Raleigh, 42nd Street Oyster Bar is closing for good on March 30th. I didn't go there a bunch but the food was always good when we did go.

Owners Brad Hurley and John Vick made the decision not to renew the lease or relocate, so get your oyster orders in now!

Saw this not long ago on ABC11. I had no idea that it had been around that long.

Ate there a couple weeks ago and we all enjoyed our meals. Those guys worked hard a lot of years!

I haven't been there in a while, probably 15-20 years or so, but the food was always good. My oldest son worked there for about 2-3 years if I am remembering correctly. Lots of things changing in Raleigh.

It was opened in its current location by Thad Eura. The Eura family that owns The Angus Barn. I don't know when it was sold to the current owners; however, the building, prior to it being 42nd St Oyster Bar was a storage facility, for The Stewart Woodard Galleries, across the street. My family had relationships with them and I was used to into the building when it was a storage facility.

I didn't go there frequently and in fact, I have been there in years…

While my wife was a student at State, 85-90 she had roommates that would work there. Obviously they couldn't keep the left over seafood so they servers and other staff would get to take the leftover food home. She said that year or so they did eat good.

Awww, before I left Raleigh we used to eat there all the time. Another one bites the dust.

For the record it wasn't technically that old. Apparently back in the 1930's there was a grocery store that sold oysters, and they reestablished it in the late 80's as the current restaurant.

Since this is turning into a remember when, anyone else eat a spot in Cary, I believe it was called Cortney's? They had a really good breakfast.

Me and my wife were talking about places that were open when we were at State. Only one's that come to mind is Mitch's and Players Retreat.

Darryl's was my spot. Then once I came back off the road and moved off of Wake Forest Rd it was the location there. Drank a lot of draft and then Long Island Ice Tea's. Two Guys, Brothers, The Rathskellar, Big Bad Wolf (and the Keg), The Cantina for a basket of nacho's and a bucket of Rolling Rock.

Darryl's was a joint venture between Darryl Davis and Thad Eura Jr. Ultimately, if I remember correctly, Darryl's was purchased by General Foods, which was run by Thad Eura Jr.

Another one was/is Winston's in North Raleigh. If I remember correctly, Thad Eura Jr supported Charlie Winston on the creation of that restaurant.

Edit: just looked it up and Charlie Winston was involved with the creation of Darryl's as well…

I can verify the Winston's origin story. Their last name is spelled Eure, I believe. There's a town in Gates county named the same.

Yes, it is spelled Eure. The original Thad Eure was the North Carolina Secretary of State for many, many years...

Heard years ago the plan was to redevelop that block but it was weird because the building and parking lot/land were owned by two different people/groups. Not sure how accurate that was though

Last time I tried to go was after the Savage Wolves football scrimmage late last summer... got there at 8:50 on a normal night and the 20 something year old male manager wasn't interested in accommodating our group and turned us away. It was really disappointing overall. No argument or anything, just a quick no delivered with a very flippant attitude, and just immediately turned around and walked off. I was stunned with how he spoke to us, and of course we were all decked out in State gear. We just all stood there looking at each other like did that really just happen?

Last time I went prior to then though the food was still just as good as always, but I don't know if I'll ever try to go again after that experience or not.
