NC State men's soccer head coach Marc Hubbard announced the addition of Joel Tyson to his coaching staff on Thursday afternoon.

Tyson joins the Pack after serving as the head coach at Wofford since December of 2018. While with the Wolfpack, he will focus on all aspects of recruiting and coaching, including but not limited to the goalkeepers..

In his six years as the leader of the Terriers, his student-athletes garnered 22 All-Southern Conference Honors, including one SoCon Player of the Year and two SoCon Freshman of the Year recognitions.

In his fifth season as head coach, a successful conference campaign in 2023 led to him being named the SoCon Coach of Year. After the conclusion of the 2021 season, student-athlete Mitchell Myers signed a professional contract with USL Championship side Memphis 901 FC.

Prior to taking over the helm in Spartanburg, S.C., Tyson coached in the USL for two years with Charlotte Independence. While with the club, the team earned a playoff appearance and franchise-best season. The first season with the Independence resulted in the goalkeepers tallying six shutouts, 90 saves, and the Eastern Conference's fourth-best goal differential. In 2017, goalkeeper Cody Mizell was the USL Save of the Year Runner-Up and was one of five to be nominated for USL Goalkeeper of the Year.

Prior to his time in Charlotte, Tyson had a two year stint at Central Florida where student-athlete Hadiji Barry was selected 13th overall in the MLS SuperDraft.

From 2011-2014, Tyson spent four seasons as an assistant coach at Wofford helping in the recruitment and development of players. While there, the program earned the 2013 SoCon Regular Season Championship, highlighted by back-to-back appearances in the SoCon Conference Tournament Championship final.

Before his first stint with the Terriers, he spent two seasons at Hofstra leading the goalkeepers as well as assisting in day-to-day operations. In his first season on staff, the goalkeepers recorded seven clean sheets.

Tyson graduated from Coker College in 2008 and earned his degree in history with a minor in english. While with the Cobras, he was the starting goalkeeper and named a captain in his final two seasons. As a senior he posted a 1.85 goal against average and aided the team to the highest win total in school history. As a student-athlete, he spent time serving as the president of Coker's Student-Athlete Advisory Committee and a student ambassador, in addition to helping organize an athletic department fundraiser for the Make-A-Wish Foundation.
