Freshman, Niko Markovic, scored his first collegiate goal over Charlotte in double overtime of the Pack's opening round match of the NCAA Tournament Thursday night at Dail Soccer Stadium to secure its advancement the second round of the championship.

Despite closing out the first half scoreless on both sides, NC State thought it sealed the deal in the 86th minute when Liam Bennett and Taig Healy connected with Donavan Phillip to find the back of the net. However, Charlotte responded with a goal of their own just moments later in the 89th minute. With less than two minutes left on the game clock, the teams were forced to move into the first 10 minute overtime period.

The Wolfpack was granted its 11th and 12th corner-kicks of the match in the first overtime period, making it the highest amount of corner-kicks the squad has taken in a game all season. Despite having those opportunities, NC State wouldn't be able to score while holding off Charlotte, guranteeing a second overtime period.

Centerback, Isaac Heffess, has consistently created scoring opportunities for his teammates throughout the entire season off of his long distance throw-in capabilities. In the 103rd minute, his throw-in would connect with Donavan Phillip's head to flick on to Niko Markovic who would head the ball into the back of the net, ending overtime and securing his team's victory.

Markovic recently earned ACC All-Freshman Team honors for his season defensive performance on the back line and two assists but this marked the first collegiate goal of his career.

The last time the Pack played in the NCAA Tournament, in 2019, the team fell in double overtime at home, meaning that the last time the program reached the second round of the championship was in 2018.

Enjoying following along.

In other news, Luke Hillie who played 4 years at NC State and then transferred to UNC missed his PK to knock out the Heels.

Sucks to leave!

A commanding 2-0 win over fourth-seeded Georgetown on the road sends NC State men's soccer to the NCAA Sweet 16 for the first time since 1992. Coming out victorious, the game marked the 10th win of the season, 2018 was the last time the program has posted 10 wins in a season.

In its first season with Marc Hubbard as head coach, NC State continues to add to its history book. After having its best start to a season since 1992, it now is having its best final leg of a season since that same year.

After defeating Charlotte at home in a double overtime thriller on Thursday night, the Wolfpack went on the road for a Sunday matinee that resulted in a 2-0 upset over Georgetown, the four seed of the tournament, giving them just their second loss at home this season.

The Hoyas nearly scored first shortly into the opening of the game but their shot was denied by the defending Wolfpack's goal side post.

Junior midfielder Drew Lovelace searched for the back of the net with several close opportunities back to back. He ultimately took to the scoreboard first in the 27th minute with his second goal of the season when Isaac Heffess fed Taig Healy who one-touched a quick ball to Lovelace outside the box who then sailed past his defender for a low strike to the corner of the net.

The team carried strong with their one goal lead into halftime but coming out into the second frame it was Georgetown that took a large portion of possession and potential scoring chances.

Logan Erb in goal and Niko Markovic at centerback both accumulated goal-saving plays to keep the Pack in front of the Hoyas.

In transition in the 66th minute, Healy tagged another assist when he passed the ball on to Donavan Phillip who nailed a missile above Georgetown's goalie on the near post. Phillip continues to display his dominance on the front line now that he accounts for a goal in both rounds of the tournament.

NC State men's soccer concluded its historic season when it fell to 13th-seeded Marshall by a 1-2 score in the third round of the NCAA Tournament Saturday afternoon.

In the program's first Sweet Sixteen appearance in 30 years, the squad was tasked with facing the No. 13 seed, Marshall, on the road.

The Herd took to the scoreboard quickly in the 9th minute of the game when their forward, Lineker Rodrigues dos Santos, intercepted a square ball from the Wolfpack's defensive line, leading to a non-contested shot on goal that found the back of the net.

Shortly after, Isaac Heffess nearly secured the equalizer when his header, off of a corner-kick, forced Marshall's goalkeeper to make quick diving save.

Marshall's Rodrigues dos Santos took the scoreboard yet again in the 37th minute to give his team a 2-0 lead with more than half of the game to go.

In the 77th minute, Vusumzi Plamana headed the ball in to cut their trail to 2-1 and give spark to his teammates. Ultimately, NC State was unable to find anymore scoring opportunities to force overtime or a victory.

When reflecting on the season after the game, head coach Marc Hubbard stated, "We've got to take advantage of the momentum we have created within the program. I'm proud of the group for what we did. It was a long process starting back in January and then we worked really hard in the spring. This is the type of group that just kept getting better the more they played with one another. The hope is that the values and habits that we created every day will continue to seep into the returners and the messaging and the legacy and the story of the guys leaving will seep into the newcomers. I am definitely proud of what we accomplished and there is a lot to look forward to in Raleigh."

In its first year with Marc Hubbard at the helm, the program had its best start to a season since 1992, and best conclusion of a season since 1994. The team finished with 10 wins, which marks the first double-digit win season since 2018.
