Hartman keeps up the streak of NCSU individual winners, but Notre Dame takes the team title to break the State streak. 4th and 5th runners were way too far back. Smith was in 28th at 4.7k but fell way back to 68th for the finish.

I assume we were expecting to finish better than 5th?

I would have bet 2nd. Our depth isn't good enough for 1st this year, but this was a disappointment for sure.

I wasn't able to watch this, but just looking at the times it appears that Brooke Rauber and Bethany Michalak stepped up big time. Obviously we must have done better as a team than at ACCs, as we beat both UNC and Virginia, who beat us at ACCs. If we would have run like this at ACCs, we probably would have been very close to beating ND for the title.

Ellie Shea was our 3rd runner at ACCs and finished about 1 minute behind Harman in that race, and ran fairly well at ACCs. Shea had about the same separation from Grace in this Regional race. Now add in Rauber and Michalak running well...you have a pretty solid 5 there.

Last year at Nationals, Hartman was our 5th runner and was 1 minute and 1 second behind Tuohy. Right now, we're in that ballpark with our top 5 all within about a minute of Hartman. IMO, that bodes well for at least challenging for a top 4 (podium) finish at Nationals.

Wonder why Fiona Smith didn't run?

As long as they finished in top 3, maybe 4 today they would qualify for Nationals. Probably (hopefully) just gave Smith a week off.

Much better race from the women today. Regionals is easier than the ACC, so I'm not putting them on the podium just yet.

Shea essentially kept her position the same relative to Hartman, but this time we slipped 2 more in front of her and put her 5th instead of 3rd.

A 78 second spread isn't exactly stellar, but it's a hell of a lot better than 101 at ACCs (and having the overall winner never helps your spread).

Hypothetically, looking back at ACCs, if we keep Hartman winning and then slot in the other 4 behind her with the same splits they ran at regionals, then they would have / could have theoretically / hypothetically won ACCs with ~90 points, ahead of ND 115.
So, that's to say that it was an improved performance. Hartman and Gapes have been rock solid. Shea, Napoleon, and Putman seem to be known quantities. Rauber was a surprise today. I would never have predicted her in 9th. Michalak is a complete unknown, so it's great to see her in the top 5. And Smith ... it's hard to trust her after she hit the wall at ACCs, but she has the pedigree to run well. Put her back in at NCAAs and hope for a breakout performance at just the right time?
If things fall our way, I could see a top-5 performance. I could also see things going poorly and falling back to 10th or worse.

Today was apparently tougher conditions than the ACC meet as the course was muddy. But Rauber and Michalak are proven performers in bad weather (Portland). The average runner ran 50 seconds slower today than at ACC while Rauber ran 25 seconds faster. Wisconsin could be a bit soft next week as 3-4 days of rain ahead of Saturday seem in the works.

The NC State men's and women's cross country teams competed Friday at the 2024 NCAA Southeast Regional Championships held at Winthrop Farm Course.

The women reigned victorious, finishing with 60 points, earning their eighth-consecutive NCAA Southeast Regional Championship title and an automatic bid to the 2024 NCAA National Cross Country Championship while the men finished in seventh place with 218 points.

In the women's 6K, Grace Hartman and Hannah Gapes led the Pack from the start. At the 5K marker, Hartman held the lead but was challenged by Clemson's Silvia Jelego, trailing by just two-tenths of a second. The race came down to a photo finish, with Hartman clinching victory in 20:04.2 to Jelego's 20:04.4. Gapes secured third with a time of 20:08.3.

All seven Wolfpack women finished in the top 50, contributing to the team's dominant performance. Brooke Rauber placed ninth (20:42.2), followed by Bethany Michalak (19th, 21:03.7), Ellie Shea (28th, 21:21.5), Angelina Napoleon (42nd, 21:40.3), and Kate Putman (49th, 21:48.2).

In the men's 10K, Brett Gardner led the Wolfpack with a 13th-place finish, clocking in at 30:06.6. Toby Gualter followed in 36th (31:00.4), while Ryan Motondo placed third for NC State at 31:17.5.
Additional team finishes included Noah Valyo (55th, 31:28.5), Wesley Larson (67th, 31:39.9), Matt Bogdan (86th, 32:12.8), and JJ Malach (96th, 32:21.6).

The top-25 runners from each race were awarded All-Region honors. NC State tallied five including Brett Gardner, Grace Hartman, Hannah Gapes, Brooke Rauber and Bethany Michalak.

Up Next
The women's victory secured an automatic bid to the NCAA Championships in Madison, Wisconsin, on Nov. 23.

On Saturday, Nov. 16, the NCAA Cross Country Selection Committee will announce 13 at-large selections during a selection show at 5 p.m. ET. The men's team awaits a potential at-large bid.

Dumb question, but I'm guessing that only a portion of the ACC teams run in this regional?

And I meant that as an attack (or at least eye-roll) on the current conference system. But even going back to the old ACC, our GA and FL schools were in a different region, and Maryland was in a yet different one.

The current ACC is in 7 different regions.
Northeast - BC, Syracuse
Mid-Atlantic - Pitt
Great Lakes - ND
Southeast - Lou, UVA, VT, NCSU, UNC, WF, Duke, Clem
South - GT, FSU, UM
South Central - SMU
West - Stanford, Cal

Been snowing today in Madison, Wisconsin. Rain and snow showers in the forecast for tomorrow. Clearing up on Friday and Saturday, with a low chance of precipitation. Current forecast for Saturday is high of 42 and low of 34. Been mentioned by others that Michalak and Rauber run better in wet conditions than others. Maybe the course will still be a little soggy on Saturday. Rauber also runs better in colder weather against the field. Maybe Shea too since she is from Massachusetts? Perhaps the conditions could work in our favor.
