Both incoming freshmen, Pelaez and Shackley, will be among the 38 swimmers who will represent the Stars and Stripes. They were selected to the roster based on the results of the June U.S. Olympic Trials.
Pelaez, from Hialeah, Fla., will swim in the 100 freestyle and the 4x200 freestyle relay. Shackley, from Bedford, Penn., will swim in the 100 butterfly and 100 backstroke.
Pelaez and Shackley both had strong showings at the 2023 World Junior Championships. Shackley won gold in the 50 Butterfly with a personal best of 26.20. Pelaez won four medals at the 2023 World Juniors, including second place in the 50 backstroke and third place in the 100 backstroke.
Pelaez enters her first year at NC State as the No. 1 female swimmer in the state of Florida, according to SwimCloud, and one of six to be ranked No. 1 in the country.
Like Pelaez, Shackley is another top recruit coming to NC State ahead of the 2024-25 season. She ranks the No. 1 female swimmer out of Pennsylvania and No.16 nationally.
Both will join NC State and return to Raleigh after competition in Australia.
