NC State Headed Towards ACHA Division 1 With The ACCHL Granted a Division 1 Conference

Perennial American Collegiate Hockey Association Division 2 power, The NC State Icepack has been granted a path to join ACHA Division 1 for the 2025-2026 season, with the preliminary approval for the Atlantic Coast Collegiate Hockey League to add a Division 1 conference. The ACHA and ACCHL reached a Memorandum of Understanding allowing core members: NC State University, University of Alabama, University of Louisville, and University of North Carolina-Chapel Hill to begin play in the ACHA Division 1, once the six-team conference requirement is met. The ACCHL conference is focused on bringing together some of the biggest brands in college athletics in the south to compete at the highest level of non-NCAA college hockey in North America.

The ACCHL, along with NC State, is charged with creating a conference whose members meet that mission and include the following parameters:

  • Member of a "Power 5 Conference" with historical and current athletic success, making them an NCAA athletic brand name.
  • The top team at their university, meaning there is no NCAA team.
  • Currently enjoys widespread fan support.

Head Coach Tim Healy is thrilled about what is to come with this new conference; "NC State fans, players, and alumni deserve a hockey program that competes at the highest level possible. This is a big step and an important step for the Icepack. ACHA Division 1 is the highest level of collegiate hockey we can play, short of being a NCAA team. The mission and direction of this conference will help grow hockey in Raleigh and the Southeast. Of equal importance, the timing is right for us as we are ready to take on the challenge of jumping to ACHA Division 1."

The Icepack has long been the center of college hockey growth in the South, with seminal events like Froze-Finley, which drew 26,000 to Carter-Finley Stadium last year. Their strongest recruiting class ever and record-breaking season ticket sales for the upcoming season all point to why now is the time for the Icepack to make the jump.

The ACHA sees the formation of this conference as an essential part of its growth plan. According to Executive Director, Craig Barnett, ""Current ACHA members University of Alabama and Liberty University are in that geographic location, so adding a new Men's Division 1 league with 'Power 5' type members will enhance not only Men's Division 1, but the ACHA as a whole. We are excited to follow the progress of this conference!"

According to ACCHL Commissioner Mike Walley, NC State will participate in a conference "To showcase the highest levels of collegiate hockey in the Southeast, and in turn, will inspire an entire new generation of youth hockey players in non-traditional hockey areas who aspire to eventually be rostered on these exceptional university ice hockey teams."

According to Healy, meeting the six-team threshold will not be an issue as the league is already speaking to multiple teams about joining the conference. "As word of this conference has circulated amongst schools, we are speaking with a new team daily. Adding teams is not a question; it is about adding the right teams to ensure this becomes the best conference in the ACHA. We also have the right four partners to start this journey. This will be a great conference between the core four and the schools that have inquired."

For the players, this is a measure of the program's growth and is as much about the past as it is about the future. Senior Alternate Captain Alex James said, "Moving up to Division 1 is important to me because it is a testament to all the hard work our players, coaches, and staff have put in over the years."

A solid effort to open the season. High Point was certainly capable and kept it tight for a while, but the Pack's depth finally took over. Really put the hammer down late in the 2nd / early in the 3rd. That's the type of team the Pack have struggled to put away the last couple years.

Herman led the way with a hat trick; certainly stepped up in his first game with the C. Took some of the new guys some time to get going, but they sure figured it out by the 3rd. Going to be a fun season.

Thanks for the updates Icepack1. I made it out for the 3rd period and stood right behind the goal that High Point was defending....good view of the 4 goals there in the 3rd period. I look forward to making it to more games this season. Been following the team since 2018.

Things fell through with Navy for next Friday (i.e. they basically forgot to put the game on their schedule). So the Pack will instead be traveling to Virginia Tech for a 7:30 puck drop. This will be the season opener for the Hokies.

Pack Take Out HPU 8-2, On Opening Night

(Morrisville, NC) The NC State Icepack had an impressive home opener at Invisalign Arena; coming back from a slow start, the Icepack scored six unanswered goals to defeat High Point University Panthers 8-2.

High Point University opened the scoring early, with Panthers AJ Beugen scoring a goal off the back of Icepack goaltender Addison Lawrence from below the goaline. The Panthers would hold the lead until the second half of the period, when Freshman Brooks Willoughby-Ray tied the score, 1-1 with his first goal as a member of the Icepack. Newly appointed Icepack Captain Zach Herman would go on to record a four point night, as well as a hat trick with his three goal performance.

The second and third periods contained an abundance of scoring, primarily from NC State. Freshman Daniel Prazma made a powerful first impression, recording 3 assists in his debut with the Icepack. NC State controlled the puck and play the majority of the second period, recording three goals. One goal came from Defenseman Nick Librizzi on a shorthanded opportunity, and another from Captain Zach Herman, both goals just 17 seconds apart from each other.

Senior Joey Gouveia recorded 2 goals during the 3rd period, the second of which came from Willoughby-Ray, giving the freshman a goal and assist in his debut. Forward Holden Koufman recorded a goal, as well as Forward Nick Shook having 2 assists on the night.

This dominating performance from NC State gives high hopes for the rest of the season, particularly with how well conditioned the team looked on the ice, showing high energy through the entire 60 minutes. This confidence on the ice will be well needed motivation going into their matchup with Virginia Tech next Friday.

Pack Take to The Road To Face Rival Virginia Tech

The NC State Icepack travel to Vinton, VA, to play the Virginia Tech Hokies this Friday at 7:30 PM for the Hokies season-opening game.

Icepack Captain Zach Herman, who posted a hat trick and an assist for a four-point game in the home opener last week, leads the team to the LancerLot Sports Complex for the Hokies season opener. The Icepack, coming off of a 8-2 victory over the High Point University Panthers, hope to pick up their first road victory of the season against the Hokies.

Freshman Daniel Prazma looks to get a point streak going as well after having a three assist performance against High Point last Friday. Icepack players Brooks Willougby-Ray, Holden Koufman, Joey Gouveia, Nick Shook, and Nick Librizzi all recorded points as well in the season opener, and are looking to record more points against the Hokies.

This will be the first time the teams play each other since February 9th, which ended in a 4-2 Icepack Victory. Defenseman Trevor Kellogg, Forward Gavin Peduzzi, and Goaltender Ian Kee hope to lead the Hokies to a win in their first game of the season, as well as a chance to avenge their season ending playoff loss. The game will be streamed on the Virginia Tech Hockey YouTube channel

Really weird game in which all 5 goals were scored in the first 15 minutes. Newcomers Austin Finch and Tait Sawden got on the scoresheet for the first time, with last year's leading goal scorer Nick Shook rounding out the scoring for the Pack. Isaac Tawyer was really good in net, especially late in the 3rd during some chaotic sequences. Unfortunately the Pack were absolutely abysmal in their own end, allowing VT to hang around. That said, road wins early in the season are always good, this group is still figuring things out.

The Pack will hit the road again next weekend for a pair of games at Rowan.

This one stayed interesting for a while, but the Pack really put the hammer down in the 3rd. Five different freshmen found the net tonight, including Dan Prazma leading the way with 2. The penalty kill, other than the fact that we spent way too much time on it, was phenomenal. All of this while missing our top 4 defensemen and and pair of top 6 forwards. This team has real depth.

A bit of a sloppy effort, but it's another road win against a team we've struggled with the last couple years. Dan Prazma led the way with 2 more goals, giving him 4 on the weekend. Jake Gifford added 2 of his own. A lot of freshmen stepped up this weekend with multiple starters out.

The Pack will return home next Friday to kick off a 9 game homestand against South Carolina.

Icepack Sweep Rowan on the Road

The NC State Icepack continued their undefeated streak with two road wins over Rowan University on Friday and Saturday. With these two victories, NC State's record improves to 4-0 on the season, the first time since the 2018-2019 season. The Icepack's playing 11 new skaters this weekend made the sweep especially sweet.

Rowan opened the scoring in the first game halfway through the first period by Cameron Chandler. Rowan would hold the lead through the end of the first, even with multiple power play opportunities. The Icepack PK unit would continue to hold strong through the second, when a great goal from Reece Johnson tied the game 1-1. Almost instantly after, NC State took the lead with a powerplay goal by Johnson. Two quick goals from Rowan in the following minutes gave them the lead until Icepack's Brooks Willoughby-Ray would tie the game once more. The pack would take the lead once more less than two minutes into the third period, and would proceed to score 4 unanswered goals in the third period to give them a 7-3 victory.

In the Saturday game, The Icepack had a hot start, getting a goal in the first 5 minutes to take the lead. The game was quite physical, with Rowan playing the body in hopes of turning the tides, which led to many penalties both ways. The Icepack would take advantage on a power play coming out of 4 on 4 play, and score in the last two minutes of the period. The second period contained lots of power play opportunities both ways, but Rowan would score at even strength to put themselves on the board finally. The Icepack would add two more goals before the period ended, creating a nice 4-1 lead going into the third. The Icepack put up a quick goal in the first 45 seconds of the period to extend the lead, but solid net-front play throughout would allow Rowan to score twice, putting them within two goals of NC State. However, solid work from NC State's PK Unit and another goal would take the Icepack to a 6-3 win, and a two win weekend for the team.

Not a great effort from the Pack tonight. Good first 10 minutes jumping out to a 2-0 lead, but pretty lackluster the rest of the way aside from a pair of Dan Prazma goals late in the 2nd. Obviously giving the opponent TEN power plays will not be a recipe for success the rest of the season (good on us for killing 9 of those). Throndson and Oliver came up huge with shot blocking and Tawyer was really good in net once again.

The Pack are back home next weekend for games against Rider and Alabama.
